Changing values, changing nation Unit description This unit examines Australia’s history during the 1960s and 1970s. It encourages students to apply their historical skills in an exploration of the changes and the dominant values experienced by Australian society during those decades. It also provides a model that can be adapted to examine values and historical change in other places and at other periods of time. The unit aims to develop student historical knowledge and understanding through a values focus by: • considering the values that guide historical research and writing by looking at historians’ views about the nature of their own discipline • exploring Australian history during the 1960s and 1970s, identifying significant change and associated shifts in values • describing and assessing the ways lives of individual influential Australians shaped (and were shaped by) these changes in the period under study. Age 16–18 years Duration 8 x 50-minute lessons Learning area • Australian History Values Fair Go • Honesty and Trustworthiness • Integrity • Respect Understanding, Tolerance and Inclusion Key understandings Students will develop an understanding of: • some of the core values that guide the work and professional activity of historians • some of the important events and changes in Australia’s modern history during the 1960s and 1970s • some of the dominant values that influenced those developments in Australia during the 1960s and 1970s • some of the ways that values are reflected in individuals’ actions, community attitudes and government policies • the contribution notable individuals made to the development of Australia in the 1960s and 1970s • the impact individuals and their values can have on shaping their society. Getting started Activity 1: Values in history Notes for teachers This activity asks students to analyse a range of quotations from various historians and to consider the role that values play in the process of historical investigation. It is designed as a general exploration of historiographical issues relevant to all areas of history. Introduce the concept of values and develop a working definition with students. To begin, ask students to use the word ‘values’ in the context of a sentence to clarify its meaning. Record three or four of the sentences on the board. Point out that there are different types of values (for example, moral values, aesthetic values) with different meanings. Note associated concepts and their relationship to values (for example, principles, standards and ethics). Explain that most skilled activities and professions have established values which guide their work and are the basis of the standards by which that work is often recognised and judged. Provide a few examples of professions (for example, doctors, lawyers and journalists) and ask students to suggest some of the guiding values and professional standards that apply to them. These professions have a Code of Ethics or a Charter (see Useful references for website addresses) and sometimes individuals can be ‘struck off’ for ‘unprofessional behaviour’. Define these terms carefully and ask students to suggest what types of unprofessional conduct could lead to (say) a doctor or a lawyer being forbidden to practise.
