April 8-11, New Orleans, LA. 2009-2010 Faculty & Staff Achievements Dr. Glenda Allen-Jones, Chair and Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education, represented SUNO as a member of Mayor Mitch Landrieu's Youth and Families Transition New Orleans Task Force. Dr. Allen-Jones responded to a request for faculty members to submit their names for consideration for appointment to one of the seventeen Transition Task Forces. The task force assisted Mayor Landrieu and his administration in developing policy recommendations to engage New Orleans’ youth and families to promote equity, expand opportunities, and develop healthy families and communities. Allen-Jones Francis Johnson Bishop Helvie-Mason Magee Atty. Wesley T. Bishop (B‟90), Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, was one of 82 administrators from around the world chosen to participate in the Harvard University Institute of Educational Management (IEM) Program in July, 2010. One of the most recognized programs of its type in the world, the IEM provides an opportunity for senior-level administrators to examine critical leadership challenges facing higher education. Eddie Francis, Interim Director of Public Relations, assisted in the coordination and moderated a televised New Orleans mayoral candidates’ forum on January 26, 2010 on WHNO-TV. The forum, which was sponsored by the Citywide Ecumenical Coalition, was held in the Health & Physical Education Building. Dr. Lora Helvie-Mason, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies, won the Dwight L. Freshley Outstanding New Teacher in Communication Studies Award from the Southern States Communication. The award honors SSCA members who have demonstrated teaching excellence early in their careers. Dr. Helvie-Mason was also awarded the top paper for the Instructional Development Division of SSCA (with co-author, Jennifer Edwards) for the paper, "Student usage and perceptions of virtual office hours." Ruth W. Johnson (B‟96, M‟98), Director of SUNO's Educational Talent Search Program, was elected Secretary for the Council for Opportunity in Education Board of Directors. The Council, based in Washington, D.C., represents TRiO Programs which are funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Johnson has also served as President for Louisiana Association for Student Assistance Programs (2005), President of the Southwest Association for Student Assistance Programs (2007), and the National Conference Co-chairperson in 2009. Coach Wendy Magee came to SUNO as the latest addition to the Department of Athletics in August of 2009 as the head coach of the newly formed women’s volleyball team. Magee guided the Lady Knights through an eighteen-game inaugural seaon, and will open the 2010 campaign against the University of New Orleans. The team will also face sister institution, Southern University, in two matches during the season. Dr. Lisa Mims-Devezin, Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and Professor of Biology, served as an Off-Site Reviewer for SACS. Dr. Joe Omojola, Professor of Mathematics and Physics, held his Gateway to Excellence in Math and Science (GEMS) summer camp again as a result of his $10,000 2006 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring grant from the National Science Foundation. SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY at NEW ORLEANS Annual Report 2008-2009 2009-2010 Grants The total amount of dollars proposed during FY2009-2010 was $22,091,844. Of this amount, $14,720,346 was funded, while $5,077,376 was pending by June 30, 2010. Approximately 66.6% of proposals submitted have been funded outpacing some key funding agencies by approximately 30%. The distribution of funded proposal dollars among federal, state, private and other funding is illustrated in Figure 1, illustrating that 83.5% of funding received came from Federal sources.
