ACCREDITATION Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) The following significant achievements were made in support of the preparations for SACSCOC on-site visit in March 2011: All outstanding faculty transcripts were received. Foreign transcripts for twenty-four faculty were submitted to World Education Services for evaluation and American equivalent determination. The University expects to receive feedback on all cases before the submission of the Compliance Certification report. The reports submitted by the Compliance Certification Subcommittees which had been stored in the Xitracs electronic reporting software were transferred into the relevant components of the software and made available to two consultants to review. The Consultants were Dr. Ruth Salter, Assistant Vice President for Institutional Research and Effectiveness at Albany State University, and E. Dean Montgomery, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer at Bethune-Cookman University. In March, 2010 the consultants were invited to campus to discuss the reports and provide necessary assistance. Following the visit, the Compliance Certification Subcommittees were restructured. The re-structured subcommittee updated the report, ensuring appropriate evidence was provided for each standard. A mock visit was scheduled from August 1st to 4th to bring back Dr. Salter to review the updated report. A similar visit would be scheduled for E. Dean Montgomery whose specialty is Financial Resources and Facilities. After a campus-wide process which involved all SUNO stakeholders, a topic was selected for the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). It is “E-Focused! Enhancing Student Learning in Online Courses by Improving Institutional Readiness‖. The QEP Subcommittee was also re-structured to provide a team to address: E-Learning and Research, Publicity and Marketing, Institutional Capacity (Budget), Student Online Proficiency Development, and Faculty Online Proficiency Development Assessment. The subcommittees continue to work on their topics and submit formal reports to be collated into a final QEP report. An SACSCOC-scheduled advisory visit took place from July 12th to 14th. Dr. Rudolph Jackson, Vice President, and SUNO’s Accreditation Liaison officer at SACSCOC, visited campus to appraise the status of the two major reports due to SACSCOC, i.e. the Compliance Certification Report and the QEP report. Selected Compliance reports were reviewed and suggestions for improvement made. The QEP Task Force was assisted in critically working out what students learning outcomes will be as a result of the QEP. This is critical to the success of the QEP. Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International All of faculty and staff participated in the very successful Biloxi, Mississippi Retreat in October, 2009. Dr. Karen Tarnoff of East Tennessee State University facilitated the Retreat. Dr. Frank Martin and Dr. Igwe Udeh attended the AACSB International Annual Conference and Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California in April of 2010. Dr. Martin previously attended the SACSCOC Annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia in December, 2009. Dr. Udeh attended the Annual Dean’s meeting in Tampa, Florida, in February of 2010. Mr. Fouad Moussa, Mr. Donald Sarrat, Dr. David Alijani, Dr. J. Steven Welsh, and Mrs. Timotea Bailey visited Tennessee State University to observe the accreditation processes in place at an AACSB accredited HBCU business school. The visit was enormously successful and helpful to the participants. Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Faculty members and staff from the School of Social Work have been assigned to each of the accreditation standards. Committees have been meeting and preparing drafts of the standards’ narratives. The final report is due April, 2011 with site visits during Fall 2011. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Health Information Management Systems After a tedious three-year search, a Program Director was successfully hired for the B.S. Health Information Management Systems (HIMS) in March, 2010. The program director must be certified as a Registered Health Information Administrator. As a result, Mrs. Andrea Johnson-Mignott MBA, RHIA, CPC, joined SUNO in March 2010. The Louisiana Board of Regents has subsequently approved the implementation of the HIMS program. The program is mandated to seek accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. Enrollment into the program starts formally in Fall 2010. 4
SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY at NEW ORLEANS Annual Report 2009-2010 Full Program Approval Status The Louisiana Board of Regents granted full program approval to SUNO’s B.A. in Child Development and Family Studies and the M.A. in Museum Studies programs during the year in view. The two programs were removed from conditionally approved to full approval category as a result of satisfactory annual reports that have been submitted by SUNO. Dr. Pamela Wanga and Dr. Sara Hollis, the respective directors of the programs, spearheaded the effort. Certification-Only Program SUNO’s Certification-Only Programs in Early Childhood and Elementary Education were approved by the Board of Regents on June 24, 2010, and began officially on July 1, 2010. The programs have replaced the Non-Master/ Certification Only Alternate Programs, as mandated by the Board of Regents. FACULTY Hirings In continued pursuit of academic excellence, the institution carried out national search to fill vacant faculty positions. Professor of Criminal Justice—Ph.D. Prairie View A & M University Dr. Christopher Linn, Asst. Professor of Psychology— Ph.D., Tulane University Dr. Adrine Harrell, Asst. Professor of Business Entrepreneurship—DBA-Management, Grenoble Ecole de Management Ms. Gloria Major, Asst. Professor of Early Childhood Education—M.Ed., Southern University and A & M College Dr. Juliana Padgett, Assoc.
