Four Darton College actors and technicians involved
in the college’s theatre program were nominated
for participation in award competitions at the
44th Annual KC/ACTF Region IV Conference. One
was awarded a prestigious regional award.
Shelbie Harris was the region winner of the
Focal Press Award for Meritorious Achievement in
a First Design. Harris, a dance major from Buchanan,
was nominated by Dr. Becky Becker of
Columbus State University for her lighting design
of Darton’s KC/ACTF Participating Production:
Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Ms. Harris’ nomination
resulted in her presenting her design to a panel of
professional designers at the region conference.
Ms. Harris was selected from approximately 300
student designers as one of the half dozen to win
regional prizes.
Three other students were nominated based on
their work in Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Donna Wade,
a theatre major from Fort Valley, was nominated
by Dr. Becker to compete in the Irene Ryan acting
awards. Her scene partner, theatre major Erin Baty
from Sylvester, was nominated by Theatre Instructor
Deborah Liss-Green based on her performance
in the same production. The two competed in the
Making News ...
first round of auditions with approximately 350 actors
from the six-state region.
Allison Stephenson, a theatre major from
Newnan, was nominated in two categories: Sound
Design (by Dr. Becker) and Stage Management
(by Deborah Liss-Green). She presented her work
in both categories, along with 600 other student
designers and technicians at the Design Expo of
the Conference.
In addition to the student nominations, Deborah
Liss-Green was awarded a Faculty Certificate of
Merit for her direction of Dead Man’s Cell Phone.
Ms. Liss-Green is a 2010 recipient of a Certificate
of Merit for her direction of A Midsummer Night’s
Dream.
Darton College’s theatre program enters one
production a year in the KC/ACTF Region. The
participating production receives a response from
a representative of one of the region’s colleges or
universities and the opportunity for student nominees
to the conference competitions. The nominated
students traveled to Daytona Beach for the
five day conference that included workshops and
productions in addition to the various competitions.
