WE RAISE FUNDS
Lunch with Frankie Avalon
Celebrity Attractions again partnered with the Rose State
College Foundation to provide the entertaining Lunch with
Frankie Avalon. The event was held in the Rose State College
Communications Center January 13, 2004. Individuals and
groups attended the luncheon at the “local hangout” to enjoy
burgers, fries, soda and dessert. The event was highlighted by
comments from Frankie Avalon and participant pictures taken
with him.
President Jim Cook, Foundation Chairman Kay Hughes
and entertainer Frankie Avalon
Avalon was in Oklahoma City to appear in Celebrity
Attractions’ production of “Grease.” This fundraising event
provided $10,000 for scholarships. Larry Payton and Ed
Payton of Celebrity Attractions have been invaluable partners
with the Rose State College Foundation. Over the past six
years, “Lunch with the Stars” events have raised over
$50,000 for scholarships.
First National Bank Charity Golf Classic
It was a record-breaking year! The First
National Bank Charity Golf Classic topped
$50,000 for student scholarships. With a full
compliment of teams, awesome silent auction
packages and a willingness on the part of all
participants to give to a worthy cause, funding
for student scholarships was given a big boost.
On June 10, 2004, the major sponsors were
treated to a dinner at Coach's and a Redhawks
baseball game. The golf classic began on June
11 with check-in and receipt of a bag of golf
items, followed by lunch sponsored by the
Rose State College professional associations
and served by President Jim Cook and his executive
team.
Regent Robert Croak, Regent Betty Wright, President Jim Cook and
Executive Director Susan Loveless
As players finished their rounds of golf, a dinner sponsored by Spencer’s Smokehouse and the Oklahoma Pork
Council was served. Sponsors, golf teams, donors, Rose State College faculty and staff and First National Bank
employees all combined for a great tournament. The Foundation gives special recognition to First National Bank
President Robert H. Croak and Executive Vice President William Croak for their vision to help students through a
creative and fun event. In 10 years, the tournament has generated over $200,000 in donations for scholarships.
Solicitation Project
Increasing donors and donations was identified as one way to increase funds of the Rose State College Foundation.
Trustees identified three to five individuals they felt would have an interest in the Foundation. Letters were sent to each
individual and one-on-one visits will be conducted for follow-up. A second part of this project is a letter to new Rose
State College employees from the chairman of the Foundation explaining the relationship of the Foundation to the
College and inviting employees to become part of the Foundation. The third part of the project involves alumni. A letter
will be sent to alumni inviting them to support the Foundation through the alumni organization.
Founders’ Club
Individuals that give to the Rose State College Foundation at various levels are recognized in the Founders’ Club
each year. Annual donations are recorded from July 1 through June 30.
Retreat
On September 27 and 28, 2003, members of the Foundation Board of Trustees gathered at Quartz Mountain Lodge
for the first planning retreat. Anthony Tormey, Leader Development Institute, led the group through a variety of exercises
to look at the mission of the Foundation as a basis for defining the vision and core values of the organization.
The mission of the Rose State College Foundation was written several years ago and was reaffirmed. Trustees identified
those elements that reflect the values of the Foundation. The mission, vision and core values are the cornerstone
for optimal operation of the Foundation.
Consultant
At the June 7, 2004, meeting of the Board of Trustees, Dale E. Ross of Ross Consulting was recommended to work
with the Foundation to develop a three- to five-year fundraising plan. Trustees feel that a fundraising plan integrated
into the strategic plan will provide solid direction for fundraising and activities of the Foundation. Ross will meet
with Trustees, College employees and community members to gather data for development of the plan that will be
presented to the Board of Trustees at their October 2004 meeting.
Alumni
Progress continues on the identification and location of Rose State College alumni. During the past year over 1,000
alumni have been contacted to reconnect with Rose State College. Currently, 680 individuals have indicated an interest
in an alumni organization. A steering committee will define the direction for the alumni organization and to provide
opportunities for alumni to become involved with the College, its students and its activities.
Building an Endowment
Four major types of endowments can be established through the Rose State College Foundation-scholarships, lectureships,
professorships and chairs. Minimum levels for endowments are: scholarships, $15,000; lectureships, $25,000;
professorships, $125,000; and chairs, $250,000. Endowments are typically developed over a three-year period with the
intent established at the time of the first contribution. During the development phase, funds are held in a special account
and transferred to the appropriate endowment when they reach the minimum level. Endowed scholarships will be awarded
in perpetuity.
Requests for matching funds from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education for lectureships, professorships
and chairs can be made when an intent to develop an endowment is made and at least half of the funds have been
received by the Foundation. The donor also agrees to complete the funding within three years. When the minimum
funding is received by the Rose State College Foundation, both the private funds and the matching funds are invested
through the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. A portion of the interest earned is available through an
annual allocation to fund the designated priorities of each endowment.
WE DIRECT EXPENDITURES
James F. Howell “Country Lawyer” Lectureship
The third James F. Howell “Country Lawyer” Lectureship speaker was the Honorable Lee B. West, U.S. District Judge
for the Western District of Oklahoma. Judge West spoke on the National Law Day theme, “To Win Equality by Law:
Brown v. Board at 50.” Judge West used his humor and intellect to bring the theme to life. He informed and entertained
the audience, offering a new insight into the law. Interest from the Howell Lectureship brings distinguished speakers
to the campus each spring to speak to students, faculty, staff and community members.
Academic Support
The Rose State College Foundation includes in its budget funds for academic support of special programs and projects
of the College. Funding is provided for students and faculty who receive the Honors Contract awards and the
Honors graduates; students and faculty who receive the Service-Learning awards; student leadership activities; and
support of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Other requests for special support are considered on an individual basis,
pending available funding.
Professor Carl Sennhenn congratulates student Anna Kate Miller. Miller was recognized
for outstanding work on her honors contract project.
RSC Foundation Chairman Kay Hughes and Service-Learning Director Jean Dunlap
present faculty members Janet Mitchell, Arnold Waggoner, Kathy Baumwart, Eileen
received $100 stipends for their outstanding work with students.
ROSE STATE COLLEGE FOUNDATION
ENDOWMENTS
Connie Howell and Sue Tytgat present Executive
Vice President Terry Britton with a donation
from Boeing.
The Rose State College Foundation has six endowments that provide funding for special purposes. Each endowment is
matched by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and earnings from both sources of funding are available on an
annual basis for distribution to support the specific programs.
The Croak Endowment for the Business and Information Technology Division provides funding for special training
for faculty to maintain state-of-the-art skills for classroom instruction, upgrades for specialized equipment and travel
for faculty and students to educational programs and conferences.
The Hudiburg Endowment for Student Services provides funding for tutoring, ACT preparation, tutored study hall
and summer activities for at-risk students in the Mid-Del high schools. Keeping at-risk students in school and preparing
them for post-secondary education are the two main purposes of the program.
The Hardin/Miller Endowment for Small Business provides training and technical assistance to local small businesses.
An advisory committee has defined the objectives for the endowment and outlined a plan of action for expenditure of
the funds.
The Excellence in Teaching and Learning Endowment provides funding to improve the teaching skills of Rose State
College faculty and the learning environment for students. Activities that have already been undertaken by the College, such
as the Teaching in Community Program, provide opportunities for faculty to renew their skills and passion for teaching to
keep Rose State College a truly student-centered/learner-centered institution.
James F. Howell “Country Lawyer” Lectureship provides an opportunity for the College to bring regional and national
speakers to the campus and community on issues related to law and government. Each year a speaker is selected to address
the national law day topic, a legal topic or an issue of government policy.
Don S. Reynolds Lectureship is designed to provide additional opportunities to bring individuals of regional and national
stature to the campus and community to discuss topics relevant to current events, liberal arts or the humanities.
WE INSPIRE OTHERS
Cash and checks are the most common methods of giving to the Rose State College Foundation. Each gift is recorded
and recognized and, upon reaching designated levels, individuals are recognized in the Founders’ Club. Faculty and
staff have the option of giving to the Foundation on a monthly basis through payroll deduction, and members of the
community can make monthly contributions through an automatic deduction from their checking account.
As individuals move into retirement or begin estate planning, giving to the Rose State College Foundation can be accomplished
through designation of a portion of monthly retirement benefits to the Foundation, designation of the Foundation
as the beneficiary on a life insurance policy, or including the Foundation as a designated beneficiary in a will. These
options provide an easy way to continue to give to the Rose State College Foundation and to leave a legacy.
Most recently the Rose State College Foundation Board of Trustees approved acceptance of donations through the
use of credit cards. This option provides a new avenue for giving to the Rose State College Foundation.
