KEYS TO CREATIVITY By Bill Aitken
(l-r) Sean Xiao Gong, Natasha Ivanovsky – Perkins, Christina Brown and Sidney
McDonald at the Trinity College Award Ceremony at The King’s School.
The keys of her piano
have stimulated the
creativity of
Normanhurst Pianist,
Music Teacher and
Composer Natalia
(Natasha) Ivanovsky –
Perkins throughout her
life.
For over 30 years,
Natasha who holds both
performance and teaching
qualifications from Trinity
College London (ATCL
and LTCL), has taught
piano in the Normanhurst
area. Among her students
have been her daughters,
Christina (Brown) and
Devi (Marmak), both of
whom attended
Normanhurst Public
School and Hornsby Girls’
High School and both of
whom have established
their own teaching careers
in Piano and Dance.
Natasha was born in
Shanghai of Russian
parents. After a year in
Hong Kong, the family
migrated to Australia in
1958. Later Natasha, who
commenced her Music
studies in China, lived in
USA where she studied
under Vecheslav
Leonidovich Ordynsky
and with the pianist
composer, Peter Coraggio.
On her return to Sydney,
she studied with Isador
O GRASS ALLOWED TO GROW
The meeting was
djourned, the Mayor left
he Chamber and a
elligerent resident in
avour of maintaining the
tatus quo of the former
ornsby Pony Club site
n Schofields Parade,
ennant Hills was
emoved when a report on
he future use of the site
as considered at
ornsby Council’s
eeting on June 20.
State Minister for the
nvironment, Robyn
arker has confirmed that
he land in question will
e included in the
roposed Berowra
ational Park. However,
his does not rule out the
ventual use of the land
s a sports-ground, nor
oes it rule out the
ossibility of the
stablishment of a
ountain bike track
hrough Stringybark Ridge
currently under
onsideration.
To excise the land for a
portsground, a new Plan
of Management would
need to be prepared and
adopted by the Minister
and this would require a
Review of Environmental
Factors (REF) or an
Environmental Impact
Statement (EIS) to assess
the impacts on flora and
fauna including: land
modification; sowing and
maintenance of exotic turf;
increased water and
nutrients; weed plumes;
further clearing for
infrastructure; sewage
treatment; lighting upon
nocturnal animals;
improvements to the
access road; provision of
parking and the impact of
increased traffic on
neighbouring streets.
Similarly an EIS or REF
would need to be carried
out regarding a Mountain
Bike Track.
Council’s report states
that the process outlined
here would typically take
around 18 months to
complete. The report also
estimates the cost of
developing the land as a
sportsground (including
lighting and amenities) to
be approximately $2 – 3
million plus a further
$200,000 - $500,000 for
an on-site system to
capture and re-use water
and a possible further $1
million for upgrades to
the site access road and
parking.
Clr. McMurdo moved
that the Council again
write to local MPs and the
Minister advising them
that whilst Council
recognises a shortage of
playing fields in the
Pennant Hills/
Cherrybrook area, Council
does not support the
creation of a sports ground
at the former Pony Club
site at Stringybark Ridge,
or anywhere else in the
Berowra Valley Regional
Park, due to impacts on
surrounding high quality
bushland. Instead, Council
supports the creation of
sports grounds only on
degraded lands. The letter,
she said, should also
request the State Members
to advise Sydney Water to
WE’VE DOUBLED
IN 46 YEARS!
According to the
nternet’s McCrindle
pdate, Australia will hit
ts new population
ilestone of 23million
eople around 7am on
unday August 26, 2012.
In 1966 our population
had just hit 11.5 million,
so it has doubled in 46
years and it has taken just
over two and a half years
to add our most recent
million.
enter into negotiations for
the transfer to Council of
its land at Quarter Sessions
Road, Westleigh to enable
the creation of sports
grounds on that site.
This was lost.
An amendment from
Clr. Hutchence was passed
unanimously. It contained
the following: to request a
further report as to budget
implications should the
Pony Club land be excised;
to instruct Council staff to
continue to explore all
options including less
environmentally sensitive
sites and use of school
facilities and other lands
not currently under
council’s control for sport
in the southern end of the
Shire and to pursue the
use of the Water Board
land at Westleigh for the
creation of community and
recreational facilities.
No grass was allowed
to grow on this
controversial item and the
following day the Mayor
along with Greg Smith
MP, Matt Kean MP and
representatives of
Beecroft Rugby Club,
Beecroft Football Club
and Pennant Hills Soccer
Club met with Minister
Parker to discuss the
creation of the Berowra
Valley National Park and
the management process
to follow, including the
future of the old pony
club site
“It is now time for the
community and Council to
fully support the Minister
in the establishment of the
Berowra Valley National
Park and the management
process that will follow,”
In 1966, 40% were aged
under 21, today it is just
27%. The Queen was a lot
less busy writing to
Australian Centenarians in
1966 - there were just 184
back then compared to
4,248 today - that’s 23
times as many.
Goodman and Jean
Pollock.
Five years ago, Natasha
began composing and 12
of her pieces are now part
of the Australian and New
Zealand Cultural Arts
Examination syllabus.
Some of her works have
also been performed for
School Certificate
examinations.
Christina began lessons
with Natasha when she
was almost five. By the
age of 10, she had
completed 8th Grade
Piano. At 12, she had
achieved her Performer’s
Certificate and started
giving piano lessons. At
14 she gained her ATCL.
Devi who was born in
San Francisco also holds
the ATCL (Performer) and
LTCL (Teacher). Both she
and her sister teach piano
in the Blue Mountains but
Devi also teaches Dance
and this takes her all over
the world presenting
workshops. She
introduced Tribal Belly
Dancing (a fusion of
Spanish, Gypsy and
Ballet) to Australia from
America and she has
featured in numerous
DVDs.
The highest Award
given by Trinity College is
its Exhibition prize. It is a
rare distinction awarded
to students who receive
the highest marks in the
Mayor Berman said.
“It is essential that the
community is fully
involved in the preparation
of the plans to manage the
site to ensure the new
National Park achieves its
full potential in meeting
the needs of Hornsby
Shire’s diverse community.
“Hornsby Shire residents
will welcome the Minister’s
commitment to an open,
transparent and fully
informed process.”
College’s rigorous
examinations. This
includes all musicians and
singers, not just pianists.
Only two of these awards
were made throughout
Australia this year.
One award went to 10
year old Sean Xiao Gong
of Hornsby, a Grade 7
Piano student who began
lessons with Natasha three
years ago. While this in
itself would be a life
achievement for any
teacher, the second award
went to 13 year old James
McDonald a Grade 8
student of Christina.
There were huge smiles
all round when the awards
were presented at The
the world of music to her
students through her keys
