Contrast Media<br />

Description<br />

Content imparts an understanding <strong>of</strong> contrast media used during diagnostic procedures. Topics<br />

include an overview <strong>of</strong> the chemical makeup and physical properties <strong>of</strong> contrast agents. The<br />

radiologist assistant selects contrast agents for procedures, based on patient risk factors,<br />

premedication strategies and indicators <strong>of</strong> contrast media reaction. He or she participates in the<br />

care and treatment <strong>of</strong> patients experiencing adverse contrast media reactions.<br />

Objectives<br />

1. Determine the use <strong>of</strong> contrast media based on patient factors and procedural requirements.<br />

2. Describe the physical properties, structural differences and pharmacologic characteristics <strong>of</strong><br />

contrast media.<br />

3. Identify patients at risk <strong>of</strong> an adverse reaction to contrast media.<br />

4. Identify the response strategies for patients with a predisposition for allergic reaction to<br />

contrast media.<br />

5. Classify the indicators and symptoms associated with mild, moderate or severe reaction to<br />

contrast media.<br />

6. Implement protocols for treating a patient experiencing an adverse reaction to contrast<br />

media.<br />

7. Discuss patient counseling and recommended follow-up care for patients undergoing a<br />

procedure requiring the use <strong>of</strong> contrast media.<br />
