Legal, Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Standards, Governmental Standards<br />

Description<br />

Content provides a fundamental background in the law and regulatory issues <strong>of</strong> today’s health<br />

care culture. Advanced legal terminology, concepts and principles will be presented, discussed<br />

and applied in relation to clinical practice. Content includes basic concepts <strong>of</strong> patient information<br />

management. Medical records management, including privacy and regulatory issues, will be<br />

examined.<br />

Objectives<br />

1. Compare civil and criminal law.<br />

2. Explain civil procedures.<br />

3. Describe the concept <strong>of</strong> standard <strong>of</strong> care.<br />

4. Distinguish between the different types <strong>of</strong> consent.<br />

5. Describe the client or patient’s legal responsibilities.<br />

6. Describe the employer’s legal responsibilities.<br />

7. Describe the employee’s legal responsibilities.<br />

8. Discuss regulatory and accreditation issues related to health care.<br />

9. Discuss the Joint Commission standards regarding the accountability and protection <strong>of</strong><br />

patient information.<br />

10. List the requirements <strong>of</strong> a patient consent document.<br />

11. Identify challenges to the protection <strong>of</strong> patient information.<br />

12. Discuss privacy and regulatory issues related to patient information.<br />

13. Apply the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to patient<br />

information systems.<br />

14. Identify potential abuses <strong>of</strong> confidential patient information.<br />

15. Adhere to health information and medical informatics policies and procedures, including<br />

those related to the use <strong>of</strong> electronic health record systems.<br />
