GRHCUPDATE OMAHAWELCOMESOPPORTUNITY TOBUILDMOREGREENROOFS STORMWATERMANAGEMENTAMONGTHETOPICSATRECENTNEBRASKAN-BASEDLOCAL MARKETDEVELOPMENTSYMPOSIUM Over 60 participants attended the Oct. 25, 2007 Omaha-GRHC Green Roofs Symposium, hosted by Douglas County and the City of Omaha, Nebraska and co-sponsored by Omaha’s Metropolitan Community College. The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality’s Stormwater Management Plan Program provided partial funding for the symposium. Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey and Douglas County Commissioner Pam Tusa kicked off the symposium with welcoming remarks. “In 2006, I signed the U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement joining the now 600 United States mayors committed to helping stop the advancement of global warming,” said Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey in a statement about why green roofs are important. “By encouraging more green roofs and walls in and around Omaha, we have the opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a healthier city for generations to come.” Green roof case studies were presented by Richard Sutton of the University of Nebraska- Lincoln on a new green roof project in Lincoln, Nebraska at the Pioneer’s Park Nature Center and then by Kevin Schluckebier of the architectural firm Berringer, Ciaccio, Dennel and Mabrey on the proposed Saddlebrook joint-use facility in Omaha. Keynote speaker Jeffrey L. Bruce of the Jeffrey Bruce Company of Kansas City gave an in-depth presentation on key aspects of green roofs along with examples of some of his firm’s outstanding projects. Afternoon focus groups on stormwater management and retrofitting buildings rounded out the symposium. Input from these focus groups will inform the development of an action plan to promote the use of green roofs in the Omaha metropolitan area. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Sutton says he was impressed with the turn-out for “ By encouraging more green roofs and walls in and around Omaha, we have the opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a healthier city for generations to come.” Mike Fahey, Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska the meeting. “Just before I gave my talk, I surveyed the audience and was pleased to find it pretty evenly split into four groups: engineers, architects, landscape architects and green industry professionals,” he observed. “Green roofs have truly become a vehicle for interdisciplinary collaboration.” He hopes a support group to continue the dialogue between various groups will move forward. Brad Rowe has passed the duties of the Chair to Dr. Brad Bass from Environment Canada. The committee approved the creation of a Data Repository for green roof data that has been collected at different sites across North America. The committee is now accepting nominations for two awards to be presented at the annual conference in Baltimore. One for best research paper, the second, recognition of a long-term achievement in green roof research. SCIENTIFIC INTEREST GREENROOFSDEBUTIN INFLUENTIALJOURNALS Two prestigious, internationally profiled peer reviewed magazines are publishing green roof research developed by GRHC members. BioScience which was published last November features a multidisciplinary synthesis on green roof research co-authored by GRHC members including Jeremy Lundholm Ph.D, assistant professor of Biology and Environmental Studies at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax; Dr. Brad Bass, with the Institute for Environmental Studies, Environment Canada at the University of Toronto; and Bradley Rowe, professor of Horticulture at Michigan State University. Urban Ecosystems journal will be publishing a special edition on green roof research. The idea originated from a GRHC research committee meeting and will have a special emphasis on urban ecology. Lundholm, who will be guest editing the Urban Ecosystems issue, is pleased green roof research is branching into different areas. He explains that not many biologists are working with green roof systems — mostly it has been engineers, urban planners and horticulturalists. Calculating habitat value and promoting biodiversity on green roofs is expanding. Other areas of research that may be featured are psychology, social sciences and health.
