When you think of British singersongwriter
Dido, what springs to
mind? Chilled, down-tempo and
understated, music to put on at a
dinner party perhaps, reliably steady
in both voice and style. After a fiveyear
hiatus from the music scene,
Dido has returned and is seemingly
keen to shake off any notion of
reliability listeners may have held.
With her fourth studio album, Girl
Who Got Away, Dido explores new
sonic frontiers with joyful abandon,
creating her most varied and
interesting album to date.
Her previous record, 2008’s Safe Trip
Home, was a warm, safe collection,
the perfect soundtrack to a relaxing
night in. With Girl Who Got Away,
Dido has pulled herself off the couch,
slipped into a nice dress and produced
an album for a night out. This is not
to say that the album is packed with
dance-pop. Rather, it is a fusion of
“Ranging and diverse,
Dido’s shining strength
and point of difference
is her voice.”
folk-pop and club beats, electro synth
supporting her sweet vocals.
Dido wrote and recorded this album
before the birth of her son halfway
through 2011, coming back to it at
the end of 2012 to polish and perfect
it. With such an extended gestation
period, each track has been tweaked
to perfection, allowing Dido to explore
each genre with ease. ‘End of Night’ is
a bright and fun electro-pop number,
while ‘Go Dreaming’ is a beats-driven
track with plenty of bass. Rapper
Kendrick Lamar makes a guest spot
on ‘Let Us Move On’, on a track that
has the potential to be as big a hit as
her collaboration with Eminem back
in 2000.
Ranging and diverse, Dido’s shining
strength and point of difference
is her voice. Effortlessly cool and
smooth, this album is a reminder of
the distinguishable character and
sophistication her voice carries.
