President’s Report
This month’s report is all about diversified interests,
and that it is a small world, so we all need to behave
ourselves.
Jenny and I attended the Echuca Steam Horse and
Vintage rally on the June long weekend. This is a
weekend when we trade boats for the vintage car,
and watch massive steam powered trucks and
traction engines trundle around the arena.
John runs an unusual rotary marine engine in his
putt putt, and accompanied us on a trip up the
Murray River at Wentworth last year.
We were surprised to find out that we are not the
only ones with a joint interest in cars and boats.
There were also several other WBA members that
we came across, including Ernie Drew in a Riley he
has owned for many years. My first putt putt
Serenity was owned by Ernie in the past.
Chris and Glenda Athey drove Glenda’s Austin 7
Ruby up from Fyerstown near Castlemaine. Chris is
also interested in steam and is currently restoring a
stationary steam engine to power various machines
around the farm. We regularly see his steam launch
Firefly at WBA events, and at the recent Geelong
Wooden Boat Festival, won most popular boat.
John and Nola Buttfield, WBASA members from Port
Vincent South Australia, were there as well pursuing
John’s interest in small motors.
Tony (Treasurer) and Linda Remmington are also
car buffs and have a number of Rovers. Tony also
knows a business client of mine who also was at
Echuca with his Rover.
A small but determined band of WBA members
braved the doubtful weather conditions of the
morning, and were rewarded with a sunny
afternoon with light winds and great company.
June Sailing Day
David and Jenny’s rowing skiff, Alice, put in an
appearance, as did Paul Rubera, in his Tammie
Norrie.
Rob Ripley enjoyed success with the new
leeboards he has added to Green Pea to improve
upwind ability, and Frank took it easy, enjoying
a cup of tea in Stringybark while Graham did all
the hard work, towing him in Nabari, using pedal
power now, rather than paddle power.
Others came without boats, such as Jim and
Penny Stockton and myself, but we all managed
to get out on the water in club boats or with
other members.
2
June Club Night
This month we were entertained and educated
by club member Paul Rubera, who displayed
some of his knotwork, and demonstrated the
techniques involved in making fenders from
rope.
Roughly 25 members turned up to learn more
about knots, and they were not disappointed!.
Anyone who has seen Paul’s boat will have also
noticed the decorative and practical fenders he
has made, as well as some of the Turk’s Head
rope cushions he uses. Paul engaged several
members of the audience in hands-on activities,
and I’m sure that we will be seeing several more
rope fenders adorning boats in the coming
months.
Thank you Paul, for a most informative evening.
Now, was that over two, under one, or under
two, over one… ?
East Gippsland group Annual General Meeting
Representing WBA Vic, Jenny and I went down
to Paynesville last week to attend this meeting.
As is usual with the East Gippsland group they
had a strong turn out from their relatively small
membership base and we enjoyed a very social
night over a great meal.
As we know in Melbourne it is important to get
some new people onto the committee to provide
vitality and new ideas. In East Gippsland they
have the same issue and I will take this
opportunity to thank recent member John Rigg
who nominated himself for committee.
Congratulations also to the existing members
who were re elected. Two members provided
notice that they this will be their last term and
that they are looking for “apprentices” to learn
the ropes and be able to take over next year.
The weekend to Marlo and the Curlip
commissioning was discussed and it looks like at
this stage there will be at least 5 boats from
East Gippsland on top of the 8 from Melbourne
and two or three from NSW.
You will read more about this meeting in Jacqui
Nicholson’s report to follow.
The room at the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club was
suitably decorated for the AGM of the EG’ers on
the night of the 12 th June. Wally, the club’s
mascot, a Nutshell dinghy, at the front of the
room, the two club banners hung on wall and
stand and tables set with flowers and candles in
the club’s colour of orange. Two boards
displayed the photographs submitted for the
competition and two DVDs rolled throughout the
evening – one of the year’s events and one
taken by Barry North of the month’s trip, he in
Peace Train and Bernard O’Kelly in Nellie, had
taken to Tasmania and return in March.
With the meal being catered for people were
free to move around and talk before dinner
commenced at around 6.30. The bar was open
and presided over by a member of the GLYC and
gave those attending the opportunity to order
the drink of their choice. Soon after 7.30, Vice-
Helmsman Lawrence Marshall (in the absence of
Helmsman, Bernard O’Kelly – he and Maureen
are travelling overseas) called those attending
to order and the formal part of the meeting
commenced.
Lawrence welcomed the two official guests and
their partners, Peter Foxton and Coralie and
David Stott and Jenny. Peter Foxton is Vice-
Commodore of Paynesville Coast Guard and
David and Jenny don’t need any introduction to
Victoria WBA’ers. As a sign of appreciation for
the safety coverage given by the Coast Guard a
donation was given to Peter who responded with
a description of their new response vessel and
pledged the donation would go to the new, wider
coverage radio tower to be built.
It was pleasing to have David attend in his
capacity of president of the parent body and
Jenny as editor of Watercraft. David talked
about what is happening in Melbourne and the
shared issues and events we have now and will
have in the future, particularly relating to the
commissioning of P.S. Curlip in November.
Although not attending in an official role we
were fortunate to have Gil Richardson, Kaye
Lynn and Sue and Geoff Robinson from
Orbost/Marlo, all of them vitally involved with
Curlip.
Gil gave us more details of the weekend of
celebrations on the 28 th -30 th November.
Wooden boats from EG and Melbourne are
providing a support flotilla as Curlip comes into
Marlo on the Saturday. (Further details are
being added to their website as they come to
hand – check it out).
Trophy time saw Nellie, the 10.64m gaff rigged,
carvel planked cutter, that took Bernard O’Kelly
16 years of devoted, hard yakka to build and
which he sailed to Tasmania in March, declared
to be Boat of the Year. Bernard will be presented
with the Norglass cup when he returns. A
stunned Bob Emsell received the wooden helm
given each year to the person/s considered to
have made an outstanding contribution to the
club. This is an award given at the discretion of
the helmsman but everyone present felt it was a
fitting reward to someone who loves boats,
always attends functions and outings and
supports other boaties and the association.
During the year Lawrence prowls around waiting
for misdemeanours or significant events to occur
(beware!) and then produces “trophies” at the
AGM. This year Graham Holmes, Geoff
Robinson, Barry North, Bernard O’Kelly, Fay
Anderson and John and I were all recipients of
permanent reminders of these events. Most
were coasters decorated with an appropriate
embarrassing photograph.
4
I was able to announce the winners of the
photographic competition: Janis Jones proved
her prowess as a photographer by winning both
the Nautical People and Boat categories whilst
John Nicholson won the Waterscape division.
Many thanks to all those who took part.
Reports from all office bearers for the past year
were read and received. David was called on to
take the chair and nominations were received
for the various positions for the year 2008/9.
A sincere thank you by David was extended to
all members of the previous committee and best
wishes to those who had just been elected for
the work that lies ahead for the next 12 months.
The meeting broke up for informal talk and, as
Bob said in his acceptance speech, “we thank
you for being friends”.
Hearty congratulations go to Doug Maxwell who
was recently inducted into the Manufacturers
Hall of Fame. Well done, Doug and well
deserved. Now take time off to enjoy your
