President’s report
Sun, glorious sun, and a good wind finally.
Summer is just around the corner!
We are looking ahead to a busy month in
October with the Albert Park Yacht Club’s 138 th
birthday, which will include a blessing of the
lake, a relatively new tradition of appeasing the
lake gods by contributing recycled water to the
lake. The MHAV have their AGM on the 28 th , well
worth a visit to learn the status of our heritage
fleet.
Alma Doepel supporters have their birthday
party at RMYC in Williamstown on the 23 rd and
the CAWPBA have theirs at Narrandera on the
25 th .
The Working With Wood Show is on this month
on the 16 th , 17 th , and 18 th - don’t forget to
display your boat or pitch in to help with
manning the stand.
Remember our ongoing membership drive and
the prize of a $150.00 voucher from Boat Books
in St Kilda Road for the lucky member who is
drawn at our Christmas party.
Check out the latest media release of the
Melbourne Wooden Boat Festival next February
on the WBA website. We are hoping the Stad
Amsterdam will be at the festival, as it is reenacting
Charles Darwin’s famous voyage of
discovery and might be able to visit Melbourne
for a few days.
Our club night Club Night 23rd September was
very entertaining even though the guest wasn’t
there! With no announced attraction and a real
wintry night it was no surprise attendance
wasn't exactly high. However there are always
surprises. After some discussion we dipped into
the DVD library and a thoroughly entertaining
hour was the result. In particular was a DVD on
a series of informal talks given at the Queenscliff
Maritime Museum in 2008 under the title "Fishy
Tales". Those speaking started with Bill Huggins,
an ex-lighthouse keeper, followed by Dugga
Beazely, a Port Melbourne fisherman, then Ken
Lacco, a Phillip Island fisherman, and to round
off Lewis Ferrier, a Queenscliff fisherman. These
are all "senior citizens", who shared a wealth of
insights into their life experiences of drawing a
living from our surrounding waters, bay and
ocean. The consensus was to find an opportunity
to do that again soon but only when the fish
aren’t running and Dugga is available.
Nautical Quiz
Are you a whiz for a nautical quiz?
Question
To be ‘pooped’ is to be:
A: Feeling extraordinarily tired
B: 10 nautical miles offshore with a blocked head
C: Swamped over the stern with a following sea
D: Experiencing vital equipment failure
Last month’s answer: an ‘iron topsail’ is a square-rigged
sailor's term for an engine
In The News
Young sailors have been in the news a bit lately, and it's not been all good news.
On August 27th ABC online reported via Reuters that young British man Mike Perham was officially the
youngest person to circumnavigate the world solo, at the tender age of 17. Young Mike took nine months
to complete his 24,000 nautical-mile journey. He apparently knew what he was letting himself in for,
having crossed the Atlantic solo at the age of 14. The Guinness World Records described him as a 'hero'.
Closer to home, on September 9th, The Brisbane Times reported that Jessica Watson, from Queensland's
Sunshine Coast, had also embarked on a solo global circumnavigation at the tender age of 16.
The committee is looking at ways to save
paper, and leave more trees to build beautiful
wooden boats with.
costs – money we hope to save for other
Unfortunately an argument between her yacht and a
passing cargo vessel put paid to any further progress. Her
manager reportedly said she would continue with the
journey as soon as her yacht was repaired.
About the same date that Mike Perham completed his
voyage, young Dutch girl Laura Dekker was being
investigated by Dutch child protection authorities, as was
her father, to see if at the age of 13 she was too young to
circumnavigate the world solo. After she lost her appeal,
and after most media outlets suggested she was too
young for the task, she blamed the media for not letting
her go. Her father supported her all along. 13 is a tad too
young to circumnavigate the world solo, I believe.
There was a time when young people took up sailing
because it wasn't too expensive to build a boat in the
backyard, join a club, and be out racing in the warmer months of the year. Now, most young families
don't have enough free time to build a boat and get kids into sailing.
Wooden boating, as we know it, and as a pastime for enthusiasts, continues the tradition of backyard
building, yet we struggle to get kids interested, mostly because the choices of leisure activity open to
kids these days don't by and large involve getting hands dirty, or wet, for that matter.
News of ever younger solo circumnavigations might be good press, and sell papers. But it won't help get
kids interested in nautical pursuits. Our challenge is to meaningfully connect with a new young crew that
can help keep the passion and traditions of wooden boating alive, and to teach them a set of boat
handling skills that will equip them to embark on small-scale nautical adventures with confidence.
Dear Santa….
You might want to put this new book on your Christmas stocking
list. It is an excellent book by Nic Compton, and a long overdue
insight into the life and art of Iain Oughtred.
A loner and self-appointed outcast in his school years, he found
comfort on Sydney Harbour, racing and then re-designing Gwen
12s with enthusiasm and success.
Joining the Australian exodus for the ‘Old Country’ in the 1970s,
Iain emigrated to the UK, where he dabbled in musical
instrument making, learning a handcraft that would equip him
well for designing and building his functionally elegant faerings
many years later in Scotland. It was a surprise to learn that Iain
didn’t design his first boat until he was 40, but it also makes
sense, because his style of artistic design doesn’t materialize
overnight.
This book is beautifully illustrated, and it has a compendium of
his most popular designs in the back.
For wooden boat lovers, it is a thoroughly recommended read.
Santa can get your copy from our friends at Boat Books St Kilda!
New on the WBA bookshelf
With the recent change in Marine Timbers’ trading operations, WBA was fortunate to be offered a number
of their unsold books at discount prices. As we sift through some out of print and rare gems, the first we
have reviewed is John Guzzwell’s Modern Wooden Yacht Construction: Cold-moulding, Joinery, Fitout.
Quoting from the flyleaf: “There are few builders more familiar with coldmoulding
techniques for boatbuilding, and the thread of this book is one of
practical knowledge gained through experience.”
John Cupp from the online Duckworks Magazine
is effusive in his praise for this book: “Mr.
Guzzwell takes you through a wonderful journey
with some of the worlds best yacht designers
and shows you what real skill is involved in
building quality boats. With pictures, illustrations
and a great writing style he blends form and
function. A good read from cover to cover that
can endow the reader with the knowledge to
build a cold molded boat as he has done.”
You may recognize also John Guzzwell’s name from his exploits in building and sailing his 18’ boat Trekka
around the world, and also crewing with the Smeetons in Tzu Hang when it was pitch-poled in the
Southern Ocean.
PAYNESVILLE - 13 th – 15 th November 2009
Alan Chinn - Librarian
The Club is planning our annual trip away for
2009 and this year it will be at Paynesville on
the week end of the 14 th and 15 th November.
This can be extended if anyone wishes to the
Friday and Monday either side.
Members are welcome to stay wherever they
like but most will be staying at the “Allawah”
Caravan & Boat Park, 79 Slip Road, Paynesville
3880. It would, however, add to the occasion if
we all stayed at the same place. Nine
Camping/Caravan sites have been tentatively
booked (sites 122 – 129) but each site will need
to be confirmed by individual members by
August on telephone 5156 7777 (Lisa). There is
also a great range of cabins should these be
required, but will have to be booked
independently by anyone that requires one. We
suggest you get in early for these.
The Park has available 6 or 7 all weather berths
(each with its own little jetty) and an excellent
launching ramp & jetty all within 20 to 50
metres of the camping sites. These facilities are
located on a sheltered canal which has access to
McMillan Strait, which in turn has access to Lake
King in the East and Lake Victoria in the West.
This gives us plenty of options depending on the
weather.
We will hopefully spend some time catching up
with our East Gippsland colleagues; WBA will be
keeping them informed of our plans as we
approach the date.
Any queries can be directed to the Treasurer,
Tony Remington on 5944 3867 or 0418 136
656. Please leave a message if he doesn’t
answer.
Max Anderson is restoring a circa 1890s sailer and is interested in finding out more about this boat if
anyone can help. Max has provided the following background to his venture:
“I’ve always loved boats, the older the better, but until recently have never owned one. My wife, Sal, & I have a “bolthole”
in Lakes Entrance to which we retreat as often as possible. We often walk the dogs along the North Arm jetties,
admiring the different boats & inevitably my eyes look only at the character & simple lines of the older wooden ones,
unless there is a really nice looking newer one.
My dream began to evolve on December 12 th 2007, when “Interlude” arrived in my driveway at Traralgon. This was &
probably will remain the most ambitious project I have ever contemplated. Sal came home from work & said. “What the
hell is that?” Our youngest son, Sam (23), commented that “it doesn’t look like it’ll float but it’ll make a good bonfire!”
The general consensus was “how long is that pile of sticks in the shape of a boat going to fill our driveway?”
On December 13 th 2007, Georgia Laine Anderson arrived, to our middle son Chris (26) & his wife Misty. I made a
flippant comment that “Interlude” would be sailing for her first birthday. She’s nearly 2 now & I might be closer to
sailing “Interlude” for her brother or sister’s 1 st Birthday (baby due in October)!
I purchased “Interlude” from a friend (who needs enemies!) at work to fill in the days between my shiftwork. Shortly
after the purchase my shiftwork became more intermittent & I mainly work days now, so time spent working on her is
also intermittent, sometimes!
What restoration has been done to this point?
Most of the old paint has been removed & the seams stripped of caulking. The old decking has been removed as parts of
it were damaged when it sank. Sourcing the Spotted Gum to be milled into new ribs was an interesting experience.
Continued problems sourcing a ready supply of copper nails at reasonable $’s, has been fixed. Damaged ribs removed &
more than 60% replaced & re-nailed.
What do I know about “Interlude”?
She is a 20’ carvel hull, gaff rigged open sailboat planked in Australian Red Cedar, with “Interlude RMYS” on a
wineglass stern. “Interlude's” last Registration Number was S205K & the Sail Number is S-54. It sank at its
moorings in a storm about 7 years ago & when fully restored, I hope it will again be a very nice boat.
What was I told about “Interlude”?
According to hearsay, it is a gaff rigged "Herreshoff Gentleman's
Sailer" of 20', built in Sydney, circa: 1890.
The last owner told me he bought it from a Gary Gale who is said to
have purchased it from The Stokehouse Restaurant, St. Kilda. I have
made contact with The Stokehouse Restaurant (they had no knowledge
of it) and also the RMYS (with similar results). I also tried to contact
Mr. Gale who I believe may have had a senior position with Nylex or a
similar company, again with no result.
I am very interested to know anything of its history. When, where and
by whom it was built, who were its previous owners, has it had different
names, old photos, and so on. Knowing the craft’s history is as much a
part of owning it, as is the actual vessel, as far as I am concerned.
I hope through this forum I can get some sound information about what
hopefully will be in the near future and obviously has been in the past, a
magnificent little wooden boat. I look forward to getting around our
Gippsland Lakes region in it. I look at all of the older lakes fishing boats moored around the lakes & think how peaceful
it would be to sail or putt around the lakes system in a boat with lots of history and character, not a plastic speed boat.
This has been something for me, after years of doing for others! Although any friends & family will always be most
welcome to join me on “Interlude”.”
Max Anderson
