Wooden Boat Association Victoria
Dear Member
A message from our Secretary
Melbourne Wooden Boat Festival 20 - 21 February 2010
As I am sure you are aware, the above event is coming rapidly into view and your Club
needs your assistance to ensure that we have a good display of boats on the hardstand.
The President’s report in Shavings has given a good description of the event and the expected participants.
What the WBA needs now is to hear from those members who are willing to display their boats. As well as the Club
boats we would like to have 10+ boats form our Association on display.
WBA boats will be in a fenced off area and patrolled by security guards (although I would recommend that nothing of
value be left in them anyway).
Each of the exhibitors (that’s you and your boat) will have to be registered with the organizing committee to ensure that
the insurance is appropriate and we know whose boat is there.
Each exhibitor will receive: 2 free tickets / entry to prize draws / admittance to the free Friday night function for sponsors,
exhibitors and associations / a brass commemorative plaque.
WBA will also have a display stand, which we need to wo/man over the Festival, which means we are looking for
volunteers for a roster for Saturday and Sunday AM/PM 9.00 to 4.00. If you could provide some of your time for this it
would be greatly appreciated.
In the first instance please respond to:
Exhibit boat? Yes/ No
Allocate time to volunteer? Yes / No
If you can exhibit your boat please provide details of: your name and address, contact phone numbers / type of boat and
history of the boat for a media display. Please note that you can advertise your boat for sale at the Festival if you wish.
If you email these details to me I will register on your behalf: chrisk1@bigpond.net.au
Thankyou for your anticipated participation.
Kind regards,
Chris Kelly
Secretary WBA
President’s report
This is it folks! It’s been a long passage to get to
our far-off destination, but the leading lights are
lit and we’re on the home stretch!
By the time this edition of Shavings arrives in
your email inbox or your letterbox, it will be only
a little over a week to the launch of the
inaugural Melbourne Wooden Boat Festival!
We were busy in December with our end of year
Christmas celebrations, and even though our
annual river run had to be cancelled at the last
1

moment due to some nasty inclement weather,
we’re now either holding our breath or whistling
feverishly for a favourable wind in the run up to
this Festival.
I can’t overstate how important this event is
going to be not only for us in the wooden boat
fraternity, but how important it will be to put
Melbourne and Victoria on the map as a place
where wooden boating is not only alive and well,
but thriving too!
A star turn of the Festival will be the Shipwright
Conference Gathering on the Friday, which will
bring together Victorian shipwrights in one space
for the first time in Melbourne to share their
extraordinary skills, knowledge and history.
There’s going to be more than 100 boats on
display, with all the associated add-ons and
activities of dragon boats, the tall-ships
Enterprize and One and All, the Alma Doepel
shed open, as well as The Wooden Boat Centre,
woodworking displays, model boats,
boatbuilding displays, a nautical art exhibition –
including Richard Linton’s superb art - boat
maintenance, rope making, exhibitor demos,
blacksmithing, safety inspection information,
marine timbers, the naval band, and even a
bloke blowing bagpipes to farewell the Festival
and the participating boats. It’s going to be lot
in one long weekend!
If you can spare the time or spare your beloved
boat to be on display, please let us know. Read
the letter from our Secretary above and respond
if you can.
This is an enormous opportunity to put the WBA
on display, and to show the public we are a
thriving association that will welcome anyone
with open arms who has the slightest interest in
wooden boats.
I hope to see you – and your boat – at
Docklands over the 20 – 21 February.
Happy boating until then!
February 19 th – 21 st Melbourne Wooden Boat Festival
WBA is strongly involved in this inaugural international event. The committee welcome any ideas and
suggestions about how we can best display our wares – and most importantly attract new members – so
any suggestions will be most welcome!
See the event website for more information: http://www.woodenboat.com.au/MWBF2010/
February 24 th Club night APYC
Eric Sandberg of the Victoria University Boatbuilding School will give a talk on the school’s activities,
current projects, and light-hearted anecdotes and samples form the school and his career in boatbuilding.
Not a night to be missed!
Our President, Andrew Cohen, will provide a critique of WBA’s involvement in the MWBF – including the
highs and the lows – with ideas for what we might do for the next Festival.
Sunday February 28 th Sailing day, Rye: On the beach, south of Rye pier
Our traditional sailing day, starting at 1000hrs. Always one of the best attended events. Gather on the
beach south of the pier and the launching ramp. Car and trailer parking requires a fee. This is a great
family day, often finishing with local fish and chips on the beach in the evening. If you are boatless, there
will be a great diversity of craft on the water, so you’ll get a ride somehow, someway.
March 12 th – 14 th
Williamstown Festival
Sailing Days occur on the fourth Sunday of the month (10:00 am) and are generally held at Albert Park
Yacht Club. Club nights held on the Wednesday preceding the Sailing Day (7:30 pm). The Committee
meets at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month.
Inclement weather and publishing deadlines
! Greg Earl : The Cloud Appreciation Society
Just having finished reading Peter Nichols’ account in his book Sea Change about crossing the Atlantic in
a boat that he had to eventually abandon when pumping day and night couldn’t keep Toad (yes, that’s
right) afloat any longer, it was timely to hear the news that our annual river trip had to be cancelled at
the last minute because of inclement weather.
The committee is considering ways to manage such contingency plans in the future: we will continue to
post last minute news re upcoming events on the WBA website, at: www.woodenboat.asn.au We’re also
looking at having an appointed Officer Of The Day, who will be a conduit for information by phone for
members who do not have Internet access.
And in light of the recently variable arrival dates of Shavings, the committee have agreed to set
submission and publication deadlines for 2010. For the next 5 months the submissions and publications
deadlines for Shavings will be as follows:
Edition Submission date Publication date
March February 22 nd March 10 th
