President’s report
This is the busy end of the calendar year with
many exhibitions, meetings, displays and AGMs
occurring over a few short months leading up to
Christmas.
We had a great time at the Working with Wood
Show at the new Melbourne Showground site
and met many young, old and new members.
Most enquiries revolved around boat plans,
building, restoring, and the buying and selling of
boats.
I was invited to the APYC AGM early in the
month as a guest and was amazed how fast
their AGM was as they are ardent sailors and
only stop at the end of the day if the wind drops
off first!
It was the new Commodore’s - Jonathon Pulham
- first initiation by fire and he performed
admirably, or should I say ‘commodedly’, with
only a few speeches and many trophies being
won.
Our October club night was a roaring success,
with a blow by blow description of the history
and current health of the Maribyrnong and Yarra
River precincts by Captain Peter Somerville, who
reminded us that Melbourne has two rivers, the
Yarra and lesser known Maribyrnong, discovered
by L.T. Robbins and Charles Grimes in 1803,
settled by groups led by J.P. Fawkner and John
Batman in 1835. The BLACKBIRD, a traditional
ferry of Lakes Entrance fame, has been
navigating for 27 years on Melbourne's No 2
River and is the winner of the only Great Yarra
Riverboat Race.
Read the history according to Peter at
http://www.blackbirdcruises.com.au/Maribyrnon
gstory.html
Peter’s passion and knowledge of all areas of the
upper Pt Phillip area is indeed extensive and
incredibly entertaining; its impossible to
adequately summarise here. We need to
document his knowledge in a more permanent
form for all to enjoy and wonder. We will invite
him along again next year to continue the
journey.
The Alma Doepel celebrated her 106th birthday
with a dinner and auction at Royal Yacht Club
Williamstown, attended by many local identities,
sponsors and keen supporters of the ship.
Everybody is intensely looking forward to the
time when Alma navigates the high seas again.
I attended the Lake Illawong Model Boat Club at
Patterson Lakes on a special remembrance day
for one of their late members, Ron Sherlock,
who built many intricate and finely detailed war
ships, some over 2 metres long. The day was
well attended with many scratch-built ships of
all types and sizes, from tiny models, scaled
merchant vessels, to remote controlled ocean
cruisers and battleships.
We were asked by San Pelligrino mineral waters
to supply a few of our boats at their corporate
night at the Point. Along with APYC’s Acrospire,
and Barry, Chris and Graham’s boats, our clubs
were “adorned” with San Pelligrino flags and
bunting and were very much the talk of the lake
on the night. The complimentary drinks and food
was well appreciated too. Thanks to all who
assisted.
Speaking of displays, our Barry’s Whisper is
currently on prime display at Sandringham Yacht
Club main foyer looking very resplendent. Their
sail day is on the same weekend as our
Paynesville trip, so if you are not travelling
south please consider visiting this event, as we
will have a few couta boats, classic yachts and
our wooden boats on display. How many of us
have visited a $12million club facility recently?
We have been invited by the Williamstown Couta
Boat Club to sail with and on them anytime this
summer at Royal Yacht Club. I have sailed at
Sorrento on their invitation days and have
thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
I am involved with the Tall Ship Enterprize and
suggest we organize a sailing family day
onboard this summer as other members have
enjoyed this Tall Ship adventure.
My good friend Miles Allen from the Maritime
Heritage Association has kindly offered to
present his video and witty commentary of the
Norway Tall Ships Festival 2008, in particular
the race “Sailing in Company”, from Marley to
Bergen through the Norwegian Fjords.
Whew what a month!
Need a rest!
See you at Paynesville!
The Last Armchair News Report for 2009
The time for armchair boating is over! Or at least it us for poor unfortunate boatless ones! The
Paynesville weekend of the 14 th – 15 th November is going to be a great way to kick off the WBA 2009-
2010 season of sailing and boating fun. I’ve been priming my 3-year old son Max at every opportunity to
look forward to his first boating adventures at Paynesville. It goes without saying that the East Gippsland
branch of the WBA live in boating heaven, so it is with some little amount of envy from me at least that
we are de-camping to Raymond Island for the weekend. You’ll recognize Max and I – we’re the big bloke
and the little bloke looking lost and forlorn, hand in hand by the water’s edge, gazing wistfully out over
Lake King, looking for a boat to hitch a ride on.
And as you can see from the accompanying photo, last-minute
boat maintenance is the order of the day. Most boat clubs have
had their October season opening festivities. Us wooden boaties
aren’t in quite such a hurry, taking that extra time to get our
wooden wonders in tip-top condition. But get it just right, we
must.
In next month’s newsletter, which will be the last Shavings for the
year, watch this space for a plethora of photographic treats, when
I report on the Paynesville weekend.
I’m also going to put in a photo-spread of 2009 activities: if you would like to put in a photo or two of
your own, drop me a line at: info@woodenboat.asn.au
See you out on the water!
Richard Monfries - Editor
PAYNESVILLE - 13 th – 15 th November 2009
Well folks, this is it! Here is the itinerary of boating activities for the Paynesville weekend!
The Gippsland members have rearranged their timetable to be with us that weekend which is great news.
East Gippsland WBA have kindly proposed a BBQ tea ( Saturday 5.30pm) at Jenny & Barry North's at
Clipper Cove just along the channel from Allawah Caravan Park. EGWBA will supply the salad - BYO meat
and drinks.
EGWBA have also proposed a Sunday breakfast on the beach near the launching ramp opposite the Yacht
3

Club (weather permitting). For $5.00 EGWBA will supply everything including a marquee. The fine details
can be worked out at the Saturday night BBQ.
Friday
Meet at Allawah CP for those travelling down on Friday afternoon. On Friday evening there are a couple
of options, to be discussed down there, such as going to the Yacht Club for their Social night, going to a
Pub, socialise at Allawah CP, or some other alternative by consensus vote.
Saturday
In the morning, at about 10:30am meet at Jenny and Barry North's, then set sail or motor out into the
strait for a trip up into the Newland’s Arm. This allows plenty of freedom to do your own thing in
reasonably sheltered waters. Meet back at the beach/launching ramp opposite the Yacht Club (toilets and
BBQs available) for a BYO or purchased lunch (this spot is very close to the shops). The beach is sandy
and highly suitable for pulling boats up onto, or you could tie up to the jetty next to the boat ramp, or
anchor just offshore. In the afternoon we could either just have free boating time or could travel back up
into the canals, out into Lake King, back down the McMillan Strait and back into the canals to Jenny &
Barry North's for BBQ tea (see above).
Sunday
Meet with boats, or whatever, at the beach / launching ramp where we had lunch on Saturday where the
Gippslanders will put on a brunch ($5.00 each, details see above). At this time we could plan a suitable
cruise (possibly to Sperm Whale Head, depending on weather) for the remainder of the day or simply
have more free boating time.
Bear in mind that, apart from the BBQ at Jenny & Barry's on Saturday evening, this is purely a tentative
plan and can be changed depending on weather conditions or the preferences of the members attending.
For those travelling down on Saturday we would be found floating about in Newland’s Arm, or join us on
the beach for lunch as above.
Our first meeting of the Summer Program at Progress Jetty
in Paynesville on the 11 th October went well with a crisp
spring day and plenty of sunshine. Despite having a few
teething problems, our new marquee worked well, displaying
some of our photos in special pockets designed by Jenny
North.
Bob Moore trialed his new radio controlled boat with simulated
smoke, engine and steam whistle sounds much to everyone’s
delight except Bob who experienced a few minor glitches. Mareel,
the “furniture grade” fishing boat attracted quite a few oohs & aahs
which made up for Bob’s disappointment with his model.
Doug Gullickson’s Tahken stole the show with passers-by curious to
how the steam engine and boiler worked. Unfortunately, Doug ran
out of coffee and was not able to offer cappuccinos to the crowd.
However, Doug was feature of the day in the local newspaper, in
colour too!
Bob Emsell brought Lady Bette and was moored alongside a 1939
Westernport fishing boat being painstakingly restored.
Our flagships, Bernard and Maureen O’Kelly’s Nellie and Barry &
Jenny North’s Peace Train were joined by another interesting
yacht, Sea Creature. There was also a tug boat which we are not
allowed to mention.
It was great to see the interest from the public in the wooden
boats.
On Saturday 24 th October, a number of members took a step
back in time to see one of the early boatbuilding slipways in
action at Nungurner on the Gippsland Lakes. Peter Bury has
completely rebuilt the Fly, a 1907 screw steamer originally from
Launceston Tasmania. The Fly was the last steamer on the
Gippsland Lakes and the last trading vessel through the Sale
swing bridge before it closed. She is an imposing vessel with a
length of 46ft and beam 10ft, using a Kitchener rudder to steer
and drive the boat, a rather rare design for a boat today. A
Perkins diesel has been installed and should achieve the speeds
the Fly was renowned for.
5

Peter Bury was a most interesting personality and had lots of
boatie stories and information . Members enjoyed a BBQ
lunch at the Nungurner jetty and then called into see
Lawrence Marshall who is recovering well after an illness.
The BOATYARD
Ads in Shavings run for two editions. Cheques should be made out to the Wooden Boat Association and
sent to The WBA, PO Box 77, Glenhuntly, 3163.
Please Note: The WBA Committee has reviewed the cost of running ads in The Boatyard and on the
WBA website, and formalised a new pricing structure.
From November 2009 advertising costs will increase, at a rate of $10.00 per 10 feet of boat. WBA
member’s boats, and boats 10’ or less can be advertised for free. Add $10.00 for an engine.
For example – a 20’ sailing boat with outboard will cost $30.00 to advertise ($20.00 + $10.00) for two
(2) issues of Shavings, and for a place on the WBA website
Most boat owners value their leisure time.
