ilL L.a ny days of' the school year were
hw,y ones Ili the Hobbies Room. Each or
our live large tables had to be strictly divided,
.iiol even any extra space was well used.
I tie I'llills or such activity were many and
ohitit hil. In the plastics line, ocean liners
t.iieIv gliding and galleons dipping
the most modern of' 'bristly ' warships of
till SI/es. 'file 'planes, ever in a majority,
ui befits modern strategy, range from the
lull e flying- boats and fighter jets to the
A relatively new skill, which caught
evidence on the work-tables; and the trial
runs in the swimming pool of the new hulls
can be as exciting as a gala.
The cars were well made, and though
fewer than the 'planes, the finished models
were among the most attractive from our
production lines.
Modelling in local materials had nearly
every boy busy on a model crib at Christmas
time, and some were beautiful.
You may ask why so much encouragement
or this branch of learning. It is an
excellent introduction to the life of our
school, and to their new friends, ('or its new
junior members. Also, the ability that
abides somewhere in a boy's fingers can fruitfully
be joined to his interests and imagination
to produce some tangible evidence of
his own successes in that line. To be able
to organise and assemble patiently the multi-
(Lidinous parts of a model - and colour it
- is a lesson in many welcome traits -
patience, industry, manual dexterity - and
is, besides, a good way of quietly spending
a wet evening.
