Sourav Ganguly joins ‘Support My School’ Campaign1000 Schools targeted by 2017 

following core activities: 

• Provision of improved 

access to water 

• Appropriate sanitation 

facility for girls and boys 

• Improvement in the overall 

school infrastructure and 

environment 

• Provision for sports and 

recreation facilities and 

• Recharging groundwater 

through rainwater 

harvesting 

With such necessary 

amenities in place, schools 

are able to provide a cleaner 

and healthier environment 

more conducive to learning. 

Education in rural India 

suffers from several issues 

where lack of sanitation is a 

key reason for absenteeism 

and dropouts amongst 

students. This is especially 

noted in young girls who 

are forced to quit as they 

enter adolescence due to a 

lack of clean and functional 

toilets. Children are also 

likely to fall sick more 

often without clean water 

to drink or to wash their 

hands. Support My School 

endeavours to eliminate 

this basic concern by 

spreading the initiative 

across the country with the 

help of campaign partners 

to execute the same. 

500 Schools from across 

India have been revitalized 

under the Support My 

School (SMS) programme 

jointly put together by 

Coca-Cola India, NDTV 

and UN-Habitat. These 

schools have received 

better access to water and 

sanitation amongst other 

facilities, especially in rural 

and semi-urban areas, 

impacting over 150,000 

students across 22 States. 

The Schools revitalized 

under the campaign have 

served as model schools in 

several districts and have 

led to enhanced community 

engagement and higher 

emphasis on attendance 

and enrollment. Former 

India Captain Sourav 

Ganguly has been roped in 

to create rapid awareness. 

Sourav Ganguly’s 

involvement with the SMS 

programme will see him 

guide and support this 

campaign toreach 1000 

schools by 2017. He will 

actively contribute towards 

spreading awareness about 

the campaign and taking it to 

a larger number of students 

across the country, apart 

from emphasizing the need 

to remain fit and healthy 

through active participation 

in sports, which is also an 

important element of the 

campaign.

About Support My School 

Campaign 

Support My School started as 

a WASH (Water, Sanitation 

and Hygiene) initiative that 

aimed to improve basic 

amenities in government 

schools like separate toilets 

for boys and girls and access 

to water. The campaign 

has over the past 4 years 

committed to developing 

the overall infrastructure like 

playgrounds and a clean 

environment to encourage a 

holistic learning environment 

in these schools. The 

campaign today has a more 

expanded purview and looks 

at providing the following: 

• Access to separate toilets 

for students, especially 

girls 

• Access to water 

• Access to sports 

• Library 

• Rainwater Harvesting 

• Environmental Upkeep

Dr. Kalam hails “Agni’s Ignite 2015” a step towards 

transforming Indian Science and Research

Agni’s Ignite 2015 Science 

Project Competition for 

School Children. His 

Excellency Bharat Ratna 

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, 

the Former President of 

India was the chief guest 

on the occasion. 

Addressing a mega 

gathering of 3000 

students from over 200 

schools from across 

Tamil Nadu, young 

engineers, teachers 

and academicians, Dr. 

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam 

advised students and 

aspiring young scientists 

to set their aims high, 

continuously acquire 

knowledge and put in hard 

work and perseverance in 

all their endeavours. 

Interacting with the Prize 

winning students, Dr. 

Kalam congratulated the 

winners and urged them 

to dream big. He said 

to the student scientists 

and young innovators 

during the event to carve 

a niche for their own 

and to become unique 

in ones chosen field. 

Calling technology the 

backbone of the nation, 

Kalam urged the budding 

young scientists to think 

for the welfare and 

development of entire 

humanity. Inventions 

and discoveries are 

from creative minds with 

constant efforts, the 

pioneer nuclear scientist 

said. 

In a rather brainstorming 

Q&A session, Dr.Kalam

with the solutions to

with questions of his own,

“Every youth wants to

Level Winners of Agni’s 

Ignite who had presented 

their Projects during the

Project Exhibition- he 

praised Agni’s Centre

Development for creating 

platform for the student 

community to exhibit 

their talent through Agni’s 

Ignite 2015 Science 

Project competition. Dr. 

Kalam appreciated all 

the projects that have 

been showcased to him 

and spent quality time in 

interacting and motivating 

the student scientists and 

in particularly he praised 

the Simple Cycle Boat of J. 

Murugan a 9th std young 

scientist from Madurai 

District, Saruguvalayapatty 

Govt.Hr.Sec. School. He 

also gave his guidance to 

approach National Water 

Foundation for funding the 

project. He emphasized 

on research as the vital 

tool for innovation and 

excellence, and also called 

educationists, students 

and industries to take 

the momentum forward. 

Dr. Kalam acclaimed the 

brains behind Agni Ignite 

2015, which according 

to him is the right step at 

the right time in the right 

direction towards his Vision 

2020 for India. 

Welcoming the gathering, 

Mr. J. Agnishwar, 

Director, Agni CRD traced 

the genesis behind the 

Ignite-2015 and declared 

that Agni’s Ignite drew 

inspiration from Dr.Kalam 

and his vision for India, 

and aims at giving a new 

perspective to science

“AGNI IGNITE 2015” is 

a mega Science Project 

Competition for school 

students held across 

all 32 districts of Tamil 

Nadu. 30000 students 

from over 7000 schools 

were participated in the 

competition held in two 

levels and out of which 

a handful of 60 brightest 

participants are selected 

for the third and final level of 

reality show titled “Ezham 

Arivu, where the students 

will be showcasing their 

inventions and innovations 

on a national TV” he said. 

Mr. Agnishwar, expressed 

his pleasure that the 

event has set a new 

precedent, an amazing 

feet in converting the 

youth's dreams into the 

thoughts for tomorrow.

How does an acupuncturist diagnose knee pain? 

As an acupuncturist, I 

was trained to evaluate 

pain conditions, perform 

physical exams and 

use various methods 

to evaluate patient 

symptomatic conditions. 

These evaluations are 

an important part of 

my practice, but when 

someone comes into 

my clinic with pain 

somewhere, my first step 

is to evaluate that pain 

from the perspective of an 

acupuncturist. 

Acupuncture theory says 

that the meridians of the 

body (more on that here) 

must be unobstructed. 

When there is obstruction 

there is pain. Obstruction 

can be caused by injury, 

emotional stress and 

other factors. So, I 

evaluate each patient

exhibition was conducted 

on 05.03.2015 at campus. 

The Students displayed 

more than 30 Projects 

to name a few – Solar 

tracking Project where the 

Solar Panel could rotate 

automatically always facing 

the sun, Lux meter which 

measures the amount of 

‘Lux’ intensity of a light 

source, GPS based auto 

meter, mobile jammer for 

all service providers, Sonic 

eye for traffic signals etc. 

The second year Computer 

Students produced 2 

short films. (They played 

the roles also) and they 

were screened that day.
