Aasife Biriyani: The Story Behind Chennai's
Most Loved Biriyani Restaurant
From selling Biriyani on a bike to establishing 3 restaurants in Chennai, Mr. Aasife Ahmed's life
tells an amazing story of struggle and determination
Chennai's most
experienced
Biriyani Chef
was born in Chennai
and practiced, perfected
his craft here. At 22,
Aasife found himself, a
young man with barely
any money to fill his
own stomach, but with
a burning ambition to
conquer the Chennai
culinary arena. In 2000,
he decided to start selling
Biriyani from his bike,
earning a meager 100
rupees a day. The slow
start didn't demotivate
him and he kept working
on improving his biriyani
recipe, till his first shop
was established. This
marked the beginning
of the famous Aasife
Biriyani.
For a 10th standard
dropout, Aasife Ahmed
dreamt big, and has
till date opened three
outlets, selling up to
1,500 Kgs of Biriyani
a day. With an incisive
palate and keen
business acumen,
Aasife has made giant
strides in his growth
trajectory. He believes in
retaining the authentic
cooking technique and
Award for Best Journalist
Chennai: Rangaswami
among them being “Here
spiritual side, he wrote a
To commemorate
prepares his Biriyani
on a wooden fire.
The credit for Aasife
Biriyani's consistency
in taste and quality
is due to Aasife’s core
belief, that it is the
impeccable quality of
his Biriyani that will
bring his patrons back.
her with a Best journalist
Award. “
Mr. Madhav Narayan,
his grandson said,
made a mark, right from
the day it was founded
in 1994. Many of our
students today hold
high positions across
the media spectrum in
India. The scholarship
announced by the
Aasife personally guides
his team through every
step of the preparation
and even the smallest
ingredient is measured
before being added to
the mix. All his sous
chefs swear by his
meticulous teaching
methods and command
over all sweet and savory
elements. “Everything is
measured out exactly,
Trust will encourage
talented students from
the poorer sections to
aspire to get the quality
education from ACJ and
rise in their careers.”
Mr. Rangaswami
Parthasarathy, born
in 1915 in Chennai,
worked with ‘The Mail’
and came to be known
as “Mail Parthasarathy”
or “MP” by his
colleagues. He served
as the News editor for
many years and brought
new dimensions in news
projection. Towards
the end of his career
he was commissioned
to write the great book
“Hundred years of
The Hindu”, which is
also acclaimed to be a
Mr.
Parthasarathy was a
so that the food tastes
the same tomorrow as it
does today.”, elaborates
Mr. Aasife. Competition
of Biriyanis from
Hyderabad don’t
intimidate him as he
adds, "Competition is
always good; you need
competition to win!"
His pulsing motivation
and passion assures him
that what started out as
a 4000 rupee business
will one day be worth
4000 crore. “I hope that
my children will take
over the business once
they grow up”, signs off
Aasife.
