City Corporation
sells skywalk idea
to skeptical public
Skywalk projects
have always been
both impressive and
controversial, and
that's how it was
during the public
consultation meeting
that the Corporation
of Chennai organised
on Wednesday at
the Ripon Buildings.
Ultimately, city mayor
Saidai S Duraisamy
and consultants of the
project convinced the
public about having
two skywalks to reduce
pedestrian-vehicular
conflict.
A 600m skywalk will
connect Mambalam
railway station with T
Nagar bus terminus
stretching and it will be
built at a cost of Rs. 22
crore. The other longer
skywalk will connect
people from Parry's
Corner to Fort Station.
This will be 1.6km long
and cost Rs. 67 crore.
Representing T Nagar,
vendors and hawkers'
associations were most
skeptical as they feared
losing their livelihood.
“Trucks deliver our
products which we sell
on the streets. If the
skywalk is constructed,
how will trucks come
into the road and how
will people walking atop
buy from us,“ asked a
vendor Sambanthan

mayor, however, said
pedestrians would be
safe from accidents
and comfortable taking
the skywalk. Every
hour about 2,000
people walk from
Mambalam railway
station to T Nagar bus
terminus during peak
hours, a study by the
consultants said.
The two skywalks will
be disabled-friendly,
and will have escalators
and multiple entry and
exit points. They will
also be fitted with LED
lights, solar panels,
CCTVs, sign boards,
fire extinguishers,
ladders, dustbins and
flower pots. They will
also have rainwater
harvesting systems.

Cops Chasing incident turned fatal,
a young motorist who crashed into a
median died at hospital later.
The accident happened
on the 80-feet road
in Saligramam on
yesterday 09-05-2015
morning, when the
traffic police team
attempted to intercept
a motorcycle the injured
party was riding,
along with two other
friends. The other two
suffered injuries. The
incident spread anger
among the public who
damaged police vehicles
in protest and staged
a Protest demanding
action against the traffic
policeman.
According to local eye
witnesses the accident
took place around 10.45
a.m. when the three
youth later identified as
Selvam, Raja and Selva
from Nerkundram, on
the motorcycle took a
right from Arcot road
on to 80 feet road, in
Sathya Garden.
A traffic police team
attempted to stop
the motorcycle, and
the two wheeler rider
attempted to run away.
Unconfirmed sources
told us “The traffic
policeman reportedly
hit the second pillion
rider on the motor cycle,
leading the rider of the
vehicle to lose control
and fall onto the sharp
median. The third pillion
rider suffered severe
cuts on his abdomen
