TED is a nonprofit organisation and
started as a four-day conference in
California 26 years ago. It has since
grown to support those world-changing
ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED,
the world’s leading thinkers and doers
give short, key talks which are freely
available at TED.com.
TED speakers have included Bill Gates,
Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir
Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot,
Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala,
Isabel Allende and former UK Prime
Minister Gordon Brown.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading,
TEDx is a local, self-organised event
that brings people together to share
knowledge and experience.

Aston Welcome Week
Aston University holds an International Orientation Week for
international students, followed by a Freshers’ Week for all new
students, which is designed to help you settle in and adjust to
student life.
Benefits of International Orientation Week:
meet specialist staff who can assist you with any queries
help you adapt to a new culture, language, food, the British
climate and your surroundings at Aston University
introduce you to Aston University and its services
help you meet other International and EU/EEA students
assist you with all the practical arrangements such as shopping
for food and other necessities and opening a bank account
introduce you to the services provided by the Students’ Union
including clubs and societies, student sports clubs and sports
provision
introduce you to the academic system at Aston University, study
methods and approaches to learning
introduce you to cross cultural communication and basic
presentation skills through workshops and group interaction.

Union that works for you
The Students’ Union aims to provide a wide
range of services and support, to help make
student life as easy and enjoyable as possible.
As the Union is run by students for students,
we’ll always do our best to provide whatever
you want, and help you out if you run into any
difficulties.
The Union offers: Advice & Representation
Centre (ARC); Clubs and Societies; Students’
CopyShop; Students’ JobShop; Subway
sandwich outlet; a shop selling magazines,
newspapers, stationery, food, sandwiches;
Cash Points; a Bookshop; the Strand Hair
Salon; The Loft (a social study area with IT and
presentation facilities) and Prayer Rooms.
The B4 Bar is open throughout the day serving
good quality food at affordable prices and the
Union Hall hosts a variety of daytime events from
Careers’ Fairs to poster sales.
The Union team work hard to keep students up
to date with all the latest campus news, details of
events, and anything else they might find useful.

TEDxAstonUniversity celebrates the
creatvity that takes place at Aston
through the research done by our
exceptional academics, and raises our
profile through innovation and idea
sharing.
The event included TEDTalks video and
live speakers who combined to spark
deep discussion and connection in
small groups. Speakers from the four
schools: ABS, LSS, LHS and EAS,
presented their own interpretation of the
event theme, ‘Design Thinking.’
Through TEDxAstonUniversity, the
Postgraduate Committee of 2012-2013
successfully managed to bring Aston
University together on one night and
the event was attended by University
executives, staff members, academics
and students from all four schools.
Aston has an active Postgraduate Student Society and
Mature Students Society. There are also many societies for
international students, and various religious societies. It’s very
easy to become involved and our societies are run by students
for students.
