TEDx<strong>Aston</strong><strong>University</strong><br />

TED is a nonprofit organisation and<br />

started as a four-day conference in<br />

California 26 years ago. It has since<br />

grown to support those world-changing<br />

ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED,<br />

the world’s leading thinkers and doers<br />

give short, key talks which are freely<br />

available at TED.com.<br />

TED speakers have included Bill Gates,<br />

Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir<br />

Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot,<br />

Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala,<br />

Isabel Allende and former UK Prime<br />

Minister Gordon Brown.<br />

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading,<br />

TEDx is a local, self-organised event<br />

that brings people together to share<br />

knowledge and experience.<br />

<strong>Aston</strong> Welcome Week<br />

<strong>Aston</strong> <strong>University</strong> holds an International Orientation Week for<br />

international students, followed by a Freshers’ Week for all new<br />

students, which is designed to help you settle in and adjust to<br />

student life.<br />

methods and approaches to learning<br />

The Students’ Union aims to provide a wide<br />

range of services and support, to help make<br />

student life as easy and enjoyable as possible.<br />

As the Union is run by students for students,<br />

we’ll always do our best to provide whatever<br />

you want, and help you out if you run into any<br />

difficulties.<br />

The Union offers: Advice & Representation<br />

Centre (ARC); Clubs and Societies; Students’<br />

CopyShop; Students’ JobShop; Subway<br />

sandwich outlet; a shop selling magazines,<br />

newspapers, stationery, food, sandwiches;<br />

Cash Points; a Bookshop; the Strand Hair<br />

Salon; The Loft (a social study area with IT and<br />

presentation facilities) and Prayer Rooms.<br />

The B4 Bar is open throughout the day serving<br />

good quality food at affordable prices and the<br />

Union Hall hosts a variety of daytime events from<br />

Careers’ Fairs to poster sales.<br />

The Union team work hard to keep students up<br />

to date with all the latest campus news, details of<br />

events, and anything else they might find useful.<br />

TEDx<strong>Aston</strong><strong>University</strong> celebrates the<br />

creatvity that takes place at <strong>Aston</strong><br />

through the research done by our<br />

exceptional academics, and raises our<br />

profile through innovation and idea<br />

sharing.<br />

The event included TEDTalks video and<br />

live speakers who combined to spark<br />

deep discussion and connection in<br />

small groups. Speakers from the four<br />

schools: ABS, LSS, LHS and EAS,<br />

presented their own interpretation of the<br />

event theme, ‘Design Thinking.’<br />

Through TEDx<strong>Aston</strong><strong>University</strong>, the<br />

<strong>Postgraduate</strong> Committee of 2012-2013<br />

successfully managed to bring <strong>Aston</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> together on one night and<br />

the event was attended by <strong>University</strong><br />

executives, staff members, academics<br />

and students from all four schools.<br />

<strong>Aston</strong> has an active <strong>Postgraduate</strong> Student Society and<br />

Mature Students Society. There are also many societies for<br />

international students, and various religious societies. It’s very<br />

easy to become involved and our societies are run by students<br />

for students.<br />
