Relationships with business<br />

<strong>Aston</strong> and Warwick Universities are leading on a new Enterprise<br />

Research Centre that will help develop understanding of the<br />

factors affecting business investment, performance and growth.<br />

The new £2.9 million centre will become a national and<br />

international focal point for research, knowledge and expertise<br />

on small and medium-sized businesses.<br />

Relationships with business through KTP programmes<br />

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme is a<br />

Technology Strategy Board initiative which aims to deliver<br />

transformational change through innovation; by improving the<br />

competitiveness, productivity and performance of UK businesses,<br />

increasing the commercial relevance of UK academic research<br />

and teaching, and enhancing the personal skills and commercial<br />

awareness of recently qualified people entering the workplace.<br />

<strong>Aston</strong> <strong>University</strong> is working in partnership with companies on<br />

13 Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and has completed over<br />

100 since their creation. <strong>Aston</strong> is currently one of the top 10<br />

Universities most actively involved in KTPs in the UK.<br />

For example, <strong>Aston</strong> Business School are working on a KTP with<br />

award winning local law firm, Higgs & Sons. This partnership will<br />

implement an innovative cultural change programme that will<br />

impact on sector performance by better understanding client<br />

needs, re-examining pricing strategy and challenging operational<br />

processes.<br />

Academics in the School of Life & Health Science are working<br />

on a KTP with the Macular Society, a UK charity for macular<br />

conditions, to educate people about the impact of nutrition in<br />

Age Related Macular degeneration (AMD). 513,000 people in the<br />

UK are currently affected by late stage AMD and this figure is<br />

expected to double by 2050.<br />
