Multicultural diversity<br />

Birmingham is a city of diverse cultures. The mix<br />

of heritage and culture of people from across the<br />

globe, who have brought with them new talents<br />

and skills, has formed the distinctiveness of the<br />

city and created a unique community.<br />

Culture, entertainment and leisure<br />

Living in Birmingham you can enjoy great nightlife,<br />

shopping, sport and entertainment. The city’s parks<br />

and gardens offer space to relax in the open air,<br />

and there are plenty of opportunities to see and do<br />

something new.<br />

Birmingham’s cosmopolitan atmosphere really<br />

shows itself in the variety of eating places in the city.<br />

The Balti Triangle offers an unparalleled selection<br />

of Indian restaurants, or visit Birmingham’s Chinese<br />

Quarter for great food set in a colourful and vibrant<br />

community that exists in the heart of the city.<br />

Birmingham also hosts many festivals including the<br />

International Jazz Festival, the Moseley Folk Festival<br />

and the Comedy Festival, attracting big names. The<br />

NEC and NIA host many of the UK’s major events,<br />

concerts and exhibitions. The O2 Academy hosts<br />

many big name indie, R&B, Hip Hop and dance<br />

acts. There are a number of venues in the city<br />

centre where you can see jazz and blues bands.<br />

If you enjoy classical music, the Symphony Hall<br />

is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony<br />

Orchestra and the Birmingham Hippodrome is the<br />

base for the Birmingham Royal Ballet and hosts<br />

many touring musicals and theatre productions.<br />

Some of the finest art collections in the world are<br />

to be found in Birmingham. The City Museum and<br />

Art Gallery, the Gas Hall and the Barber Institute of<br />

Fine Arts provide spectacular settings for classical<br />

and modern works, while the IKON Gallery hosts<br />

contemporary exhibitions and installations.<br />

Superb shopping is only a short walk from the<br />

<strong>University</strong> Campus. The Bullring, Europe’s largest<br />

city centre shopping development, has the<br />

equivalent of over 26 football pitches worth of<br />

shops, boutiques and restaurants.<br />

Birmingham is at the heart of sporting action.<br />

Football clubs, including <strong>Aston</strong> Villa and<br />

Birmingham City, are within the city. Warwickshire<br />

County Ground hosts International Test and county<br />

cricket games; major tennis tournaments are held<br />

at Edgbaston Priory; international golf tournaments<br />

at The Belfry and the National Golf Centre (including<br />

the Ryder Cup). A number of athletics events are<br />

held at the Alexandra Stadium and the NIA.<br />

Business and industry<br />

Birmingham is a global centre for business,<br />

commerce and industry. The city is home to<br />

numerous UK and overseas banks, law firms<br />

and Europe’s second largest insurance market.<br />

The UK’s top accountancy and management<br />

consultancy firms have their largest offices outside<br />

London here, and the city has a thriving small<br />

enterprise community. <strong>Aston</strong>’s strong links with<br />

business and industry benefit our students.<br />

Our courses are professionally relevant and leading<br />

business men and women often come to <strong>Aston</strong><br />

to share their knowledge and experience through<br />

guest lectures. There are fantastic opportunities for<br />

our students to build valuable business networks<br />

and contacts whilst at <strong>Aston</strong>, and many secure jobs<br />
