Multicultural diversity
Birmingham is a city of diverse cultures. The mix
of heritage and culture of people from across the
globe, who have brought with them new talents
and skills, has formed the distinctiveness of the
city and created a unique community.
Culture, entertainment and leisure
Living in Birmingham you can enjoy great nightlife,
shopping, sport and entertainment. The city’s parks
and gardens offer space to relax in the open air,
and there are plenty of opportunities to see and do
something new.
Birmingham’s cosmopolitan atmosphere really
shows itself in the variety of eating places in the city.
The Balti Triangle offers an unparalleled selection
of Indian restaurants, or visit Birmingham’s Chinese
Quarter for great food set in a colourful and vibrant
community that exists in the heart of the city.
Birmingham also hosts many festivals including the
International Jazz Festival, the Moseley Folk Festival
and the Comedy Festival, attracting big names. The
NEC and NIA host many of the UK’s major events,
concerts and exhibitions. The O2 Academy hosts
many big name indie, R&B, Hip Hop and dance
acts. There are a number of venues in the city
centre where you can see jazz and blues bands.
If you enjoy classical music, the Symphony Hall
is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony
Orchestra and the Birmingham Hippodrome is the
base for the Birmingham Royal Ballet and hosts
many touring musicals and theatre productions.
Some of the finest art collections in the world are
to be found in Birmingham. The City Museum and
Art Gallery, the Gas Hall and the Barber Institute of
Fine Arts provide spectacular settings for classical
and modern works, while the IKON Gallery hosts
contemporary exhibitions and installations.
Superb shopping is only a short walk from the
University Campus. The Bullring, Europe’s largest
city centre shopping development, has the
equivalent of over 26 football pitches worth of
shops, boutiques and restaurants.
Birmingham is at the heart of sporting action.
Football clubs, including Aston Villa and
Birmingham City, are within the city. Warwickshire
County Ground hosts International Test and county
cricket games; major tennis tournaments are held
at Edgbaston Priory; international golf tournaments
at The Belfry and the National Golf Centre (including
the Ryder Cup). A number of athletics events are
held at the Alexandra Stadium and the NIA.
Business and industry
Birmingham is a global centre for business,
commerce and industry. The city is home to
numerous UK and overseas banks, law firms
and Europe’s second largest insurance market.
The UK’s top accountancy and management
consultancy firms have their largest offices outside
London here, and the city has a thriving small
enterprise community. Aston’s strong links with
business and industry benefit our students.
Our courses are professionally relevant and leading
business men and women often come to Aston
to share their knowledge and experience through
guest lectures. There are fantastic opportunities for
our students to build valuable business networks
and contacts whilst at Aston, and many secure jobs
right here in Birmingham.
