Ultra-fast autofocus system
with 11 twin cross-type sensors.
The E-3 boasts the world’s
fastest* autofocus system.
Based on a fully-biaxial
high-speed 11-point AF
system with both horizontal
and vertical sensor lines,
it accurately calculates
optimal sharpness from a total of 44 different data points.
In addition, pixel multiplication technologies ensure that
performance is boosted in low light (–2EV at ISO 100).
Meanwhile, fast shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 th sec.
provide the ability to freeze action dead in its tracks.
When every second counts, users can also stop the clock
with shooting speeds of up to 5fps in full Megapixel mode
(with 17 image RAW buffer in burst mode).
The layout of the 11-point AF sensor system was determined by a
statistical analysis of the position of primary subjects in thousands
of photographs. Interviews with countless professional photographers
were also conducted.
A half pitch-shifted dual sensing array enables more precise focusing
than traditional systems are capable of.
A range of AF modes are available to suit the requirements of any situation. In Single AF mode, only one of the 11 focal points is selected.
Group Area mode selects the three or four adjacent points. In All Points mode, sharpness is calculated on the basis of an evaluation
of all 11 points.
1/8000 th sec. high-speed shutter.
1/8000 th sec. high shutter speed enables instant shooting,
while X = 1/250 th sec. is ideal for synchro photography. This
high-speed shutter enables shooting at maximum aperture
so that the superior optical quality of ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses
can always be enjoyed to the fullest, even in bright sunlight.
The design of the mirror box was also improved to reduce
the time required for raising the mirror. This mechanism is
now faster and shutter delay has been greatly reduced.
What’s more, the high-speed,
high-precision mechanical shutter
withstood a 150,000 continuous
shot durability test.
Sequential shooting at five images per second.
In combination with the improved TruePic III processor and
a redesigned mirror mechanism, the high-speed Live MOS
sensor enables sequential shooting at up to five frames per
second in full 10 Megapixel mode.
Complementary processors enhance
performance.
Special complementary processors are located inside the
body where large volumes of data need to be processed.
Three processors ensure fast data rates: the AF processor
reads data from the AF sensor, the TruePic III processor
takes care of image data, and the IS processor manages
image stabilisation by counteracting camera
movements.
The E-3 features a powerful built-in image stabilisation
system to eliminate blur caused by camera movement. The
system is capable of compensating against the effects of
camera shake up to the equivalent of 5 EV steps. A gyro
Precise image stabilisation technology compensates for camera shake to ensure sharper images.
sensor that was developed as a component for the aerospace
industry sends information about the tiniest vibrations
to supersonic motors that compensate for the vibrations by
counteracting their effects. This makes a tripod less important.
Positioning the image stabiliser in the camera body
rather than in the lens has a number of advantages: the
image quality that can be achieved at this location avoids
compromises caused by optical factors, lens design can be
more compact, and the image stabilisation effect works for
all Four Thirds lenses. This even applies to fisheye and extreme
wide-angle lenses, and holds for all manufacturers
participating in the standard.
Near telecentric ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses.
Truly superior image quality requires a high-performance
lens with outstanding fine-grain reproduction capabilities.
To achieve the most advanced standards in imaging,
ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses are developed exclusively for use in
digital SLR photography. They are also optimised for future
generations of high-performance imaging sensors.
Outstanding imaging ability, versatility and compatibility
with the Four Thirds System make ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses
the new benchmark for digital photography – both now
and in the future.
The Top Pro lens series comprises an impressive selection
of interchangeable lenses that are among the best in the
world for professional applications. For example, it includes
a zoom lens with an exceptional 1:2.0 aperture across the
entire zooming range.
In contrast to lenses designed for 35mm photography (upper
image), the near telecentric construction of lenses developed for
the Four Thirds Standard (lower image) ensures that light always
reaches the sensor at near perpendicular angles.
Total flexibility – an adjustable LCD
for shots from any angle.
Large, bright, adjustable and informative:
the HyperCrystal LCD.
Adjustable both horizontally and vertically, the generous
6.4cm Live View LCD expands creative possibilities in all
directions. With an impressive 230,000 pixels of resolution
and a viewing angle of 176 degrees, this brilliant display
is even visible in direct sunlight. Compositional flexibility is
also second to none – by swivelling in all directions, the
LCD facilitates shooting from any angle. This allows you
to photograph subjects outside of your own field of vision
which are not visible to the eye and were previously beyond
reach. You can maintain control of the shot under any
circumstances while maintaining eye contact. You can
even shoot from overhead or very low to the ground.
The Live View LCD has a horizontal, vertical and diagonal viewing angle of 176 degrees. Even
shots from side angles can easily be obtained without relinquishing full control of the image.
The brightness of the display automatically adjusts to available light levels. The LCD provides
100% professional coverage and also plays a pivotal role in AF mode.
Get up close without any
contortions: Live View enables
extremely low-angle photographs
without the need to use the
It is almost impossible to prevent dust from getting inside
a camera body while lenses are being changed.
Yet just one particle of dust on a sensitive sensor
surface can lead to serious adverse effects for image
quality. Olympus’ Supersonic Wave Filter (SSWF) was
the world’s first dust protection system. Thanks to continual
improvements, it is still the most effective. Positioned
in front of the sensor, the Supersonic Wave Filter removes
dust at lightning speeds with the help of supersonic vibrations
at more than 30,000Hz. This powerful technology
functions at a molecular level where shaking motions and
static charges are no longer effective.
important components including the built-in flash and LCD
screen are sealed against the effects of sand, dust, rain and
water drops. Made of a “thixomold” magnesium alloy, the
body is exceptionally durable, solid and lightweight.
A wide selection of ZUIKO DIGITAL Pro and Top Pro lenses
also includes models that are protected against water and
A comprehensive suite of settings and functi
control and assurance for every shot.
Two sensors for precise white balance.
White balance is automatically calculated from data provided by a white
balance sensor and the image sensor – the camera then automatically
detects white in images and adjusts the colour balance accordingly. For
optimal shooting in most common situations, eight different values ranging
from 3000K to 7500K are available as white balance presets. In addition, a
one-touch white balance function allows photographers to save up to four
optimal white balance settings to suit conditions. Both settings can be
adjusted to ±7 steps (1 step = 2 mired steps). The bracketing function is
also especially helpful in difficult lighting conditions. It automatically shoots
a series of three versions of an image with different colour temperatures at
intervals of 2, 4 or 6 steps.
–6 steps (R). Auto. +6 steps (R).
Even before shooting begins, the Olympus
E-3 can determine the way that colours are
managed in an image. The Colour Space
function allows you to define the colour space
of an image (Adobe RGB or sRGB) in advance,
so that image files are optimised for
use with devices such as printers, monitors
and image editing software at a later date.
It is also possible to preset RGB saturation (for
all three channels), as well as saturation levels
for single channels and skin tones.
In both automatic and manual modes, light sensitivity settings range from
ISO 100 to ISO 3200 in 1/3 EV. Image artefacts at high ISO values are
dramatically reduced by the new TruePic III processing engine.
The parameters for automatic ISO settings can be individually set, while the
bracketing function of the E-3 automatically shoots three frames at different
ISO settings.
Noise reduction.
This function reduces noise in the form of coloured pixels that can appear
during long exposures. Noise reduction automatically reduces noise to produce
clearer images. Two images are captured: one “normal” picture and
one with the same exposure settings but a closed aperture. Noise is identified
in the “dark” picture and then processed out of the entire image file.
Metering.
There are three options for light metering: ESP (Electro Selective Pattern),
centre-weighted averaging metering, and spot metering. With digital ESP
metering the camera measures light levels to calculate differences in
49 separate areas of the image. This takes various scene elements such
as backlighting into consideration. Centre-weighted averaging metering
performs average metering between the subject and background lighting,
placing more emphasis on the subject at the centre. With spot metering,
the camera measures a very small area around the centre of the subject.
This area is defined by the spot metering area mark in the viewfinder, and
comprises around 2% of the total
image area. An additional highlight
control function automatically corrects
the exposure of light areas in
the centre of the image against
bright backgrounds, while shadow
control performs the reverse function
by improving dark objects in the
centre of an image with dark background
tones.
Bracketing.
The camera automatically shoots between three and five pictures at
different exposure values for each frame. You can decide which picture
you prefer later. The images can be adjusted in steps of 1/3, 1/2 or 1 EV,
and bracketing settings can be changed at the touch of a button or via
the menu. This feature is available in all exposure modes (P, A, S or M).
Bracketing example:
–1/3 EV ±0 +1/3 EV
Data storage.
Images can be saved in the following formats: RAW, RAW and JPEG
formats simultaneously, as well as a range of JPEG compression rates.
The new RAW format enables higher and loss-less compression rates.
Two card slots are available for CompactFlash cards (Types I and II),
Microdrives and xD-Picture Cards. The camera also boasts high-speed
USB 2.0.
Professional AEL/AFL control.
Under normal conditions the exposure (AE) and focus (AF) settings
are retained from the moment the shutter button is depressed half
way until the shutter is actually released. These settings can also
be saved using the AEL/AFL button (AE Lock and AF Lock).
Super Control Panel.
The large swivel LCD on the back of the camera functions both as a
viewfinder and a Live View display. As a Super Control Panel, it enables the
simultaneous display and adjustment of image settings. It can be used to
preview single images with or without superimposed image information
such as a histogram. This function is activated with the INFO button.
The Tatsuno Philosophy.
The quality of an image is determined by the quality of the
lens used to produce it. The development of lenses which
meet the stringent optical requirements of digital SLR photography
is a particular conceptual challenge. Not only must
communication with the camera body and processor be
mastered, but technologies key to the subsequent processing
of images must also be considered – all the way to the
printer. Due to the strict standards that Olympus set for its
ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses, there was never any doubt that the
development and manufacture of these vital components
would take place in-house. Since the days of Olympus’ OM
series of analogue SLR cameras, the Tatsuno facility in the
mountainous, high-tech Kami-ina region of Japan’s Nagano
prefecture has assumed this responsibility. This is where
Olympus’ esteemed specialists practice their fine technical
and craft skills while sharing their experience, knowledge
and passion for the field of imaging. In an atmosphere of
utmost concentration, the latest automated production
facilities exist alongside traditional work stations where
individual pieces are hand-crafted, inspected and polished.
This principle forms the foundation of Olympus’ renowned
reputation in the field of optics and guides all future developments.
A future-proof system
you can depend on.
The Olympus E-3 is based on the Four Thirds System –
an open standard that ensures inter-compatibility between
manufacturers. This allows the bodies and lenses of various
brands to be mixed and matched in any number of combinations.
The Four Thirds System was specifically developed
for the unique requirements of digital photography.
This entails achieving the highest image quality possible by
ensuring a direct optical path to the image sensor, intelligent
communication between the camera body and lens, lightness
and compactness, and cost-effective, future-proof
design. In addition, the type, size and mount of the lens has
been standardised, and distances between the lens mount,
image plane and last lens element were precisely defined.
The standard also prescribes the exact size of the image
circle, with the lens mount being approximately twice the
size of the diagonal of the sensor. This allows for the
construction of bright, near telecentric lenses that achieve
outstanding image quality.
Flash technology for the ultimate
in flexibility and convenience.
Olympus’ new RC Data Transfer System
enables wireless communication between
the camera and special external flash units
such as the new FL-50R and FL-36R.
No separate commander unit is required
because all functions are triggered and
controlled directly from the E-3’s integrat -
ed flash. Depending on what lighting setup
you require, up to three separate flash
groups can be controlled directly from the
camera at one time. Settings and adjustments
can be controlled from the Super
Control Panel on the LCD. Now it’s simple
and convenient to experiment with various
lighting options without having to worry
about cable clutter.
Wireless TTL FL-50R flash unit.
The FL-50R electronic flash unit was specially developed
for use in digital photography and utilises RC Data Transfer
Technology. Boasting multiple adjustment modes, highspeed
synchronisation and a large selection of accessories,
this flash unit is the ideal complement to the Olympus E-3.
It has a very powerful GN50 at a focal length of 42mm
(equivalent to 85mm on a 35mm camera; ISO 100), and
GN28 at a focal length of 12mm (equivalent to 24mm on
a 35mm camera; ISO 100).
• The reflector can be tilted and
swivelled.
• The Olympus E-3 enables flash
synchronisation at all shutter
speeds – 1/8000 th sec. in FP mode.
• Flash coverage is automatically
adjusted in several steps to corre-
spond to the focal length of the
lens when zooming.
• In addition to manual settings,
fast recycle intervals of as little
as 1.3 seconds are possible (in
combination with an external
power source).
• The FLBA-1 bounce adapter can
be mounted on the flash head to
diffuse shadows, while the FLRA-1
reflector adapter softens the effects
of bounce lighting. The FL-50R comes
with both items, as well as the FLST-1
flash stand.
Wireless TTL FL-36R flash unit.
A compact electronic flash unit with RC Data Transfer
System for use in digital photography. With GN36 at a focal
length of 42mm and GN28 at a focal length of 12mm, its
technical specifications and capabilities are otherwise
equivalent to the FL-50R. Comes with
the FLST-1 flash stand. FLRA-1 reflector
adapter is available as an optional accessory.
Perfect lighting for professional assignments.
The professional macro flash system affords E-3 photographers
greater flexibility and creative control. It includes a
ring flash unit, a twin flash set, an adapter ring and a flash
control unit. The macro system is specially designed for
Olympus’ Four Thirds-based digital SLR system. Each unit
is available separately and includes a macro flash controller
unit that is mounted
on the E-3’s hot shoe.
Enhanced lighting effects: the same macro image with
frontal flash (left), and backlit with an additional flash from
behind (right).
Software for the entire
workflow.
In addition to lenses and flash components, the Olympus
E-System also includes a wide range of accessories:
batteries, chargers, camera bags, remote controls and
more.
The E-3 comes
with Olympus
Master software
to manage important
functions
and tasks
such as downloading,
viewing,
evaluating, archiving and printing. Available as an optional
extra, the new Olympus Studio 2.1 is perfectly suited to the
requirements of professional photographers.
Operating the camera from a computer.
If the camera is connected to a computer (PC or Mac), it
is able to be operated via the computer’s keyboard. This
allows photos to be saved directly onto the hard drive and
viewed on the computer’s monitor.
example, a single edit can be quickly and easily applied to
all of the photographs from a particular shoot. It is also
possible to correct distortions while simultaneously eliminating
artefacts.
Virtual light box.
The virtual lightbox functions the same way as a normal light
box used for checking film. This allows multiple images to
be viewed simultaneously on a computer. Images can then
be selected, grouped and edited.
RAW data format.
Numerous settings and direct control via the monitor enable
the best results to be obtained from a group of shots so that
they can be saved in TIFF or JPEG format. Once defined,
a setting can be saved and applied to all images in a series
via batch editing mode.
Image editing.
An image editing mode includes countless key features
such as levels and gamma correction. In batch mode, for
