The Olympus E-3 is based on the Four Thirds System –
an open standard that ensures inter-compatibility between
manufacturers. This allows the bodies and lenses of various
brands to be mixed and matched in any number of combinations.
The Four Thirds System was specifically developed
for the unique requirements of digital photography.
This entails achieving the highest image quality possible by
ensuring a direct optical path to the image sensor, intelligent
communication between the camera body and lens, lightness
and compactness, and cost-effective, future-proof
design. In addition, the type, size and mount of the lens has
been standardised, and distances between the lens mount,
image plane and last lens element were precisely defined.
The standard also prescribes the exact size of the image
circle, with the lens mount being approximately twice the
size of the diagonal of the sensor. This allows for the
construction of bright, near telecentric lenses that achieve
outstanding image quality.
The new ZUIKO DIGITAL SWD lenses join an already-extensive range.
