arena to clearly define the term “SHED BLOOD”:<br />

• I propose the following definitions:<br />

• “Cardiotomy Blood” – is the franc whole blood<br />

that accumulates inside the pericardium coming<br />

directly from a great vessel or the open heart<br />

itself and should be returned via the cardiotomy<br />

suction (Pump Sucker)<br />

• “Shed Blood” – is the blood that has<br />

accumulated OUTSIDE the pericardium including<br />

chest tube drainage or blood lost from other<br />

wound sites and is collected until the patient<br />

stops bleeding and should be returned via a Cell<br />
