“visualization of graphs” among <strong>the</strong> practices of <strong>the</strong> “secret of language” (gomitsu). This<br />
practice does not necessarily require <strong>the</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> deep mean<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />
graphs, but never<strong>the</strong>less generates a great salvific power.<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g to explanations that Kakuban scatters <strong>in</strong> various parts of his Gor<strong>in</strong><br />
kujimyø himitsu shaku, this k<strong>in</strong>d of visualization may only consist <strong>in</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g at shittan<br />
characters, <strong>and</strong> can <strong>the</strong>refore be performed by anyone, <strong>in</strong>dependently from <strong>the</strong> situation,<br />
<strong>the</strong> context, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> performer. This practice constitutes a magical use of writ<strong>in</strong>g that is<br />
of great <strong>the</strong>oretical <strong>in</strong>terest because, while be<strong>in</strong>g homologous to <strong>the</strong> magical use of<br />
speech as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of mantras, it does not seem to be explicable only by consider<strong>in</strong>g<br />
writ<strong>in</strong>g a mere graphic occurrence of speech.<br />
Giorgio Raimondo Cardona made important considerations on <strong>the</strong> subject, <strong>and</strong> it<br />
seems appropriate to quote him extensively:<br />
If <strong>the</strong> one who carries <strong>the</strong> amulet with him were also able, if he<br />
wanted to, to pronounce or chant by himself <strong>the</strong> formula that is<br />
<strong>in</strong>scribed <strong>in</strong> it, <strong>the</strong> magic of writ<strong>in</strong>g would just be a particular, delayed<br />
case of <strong>the</strong> magic of words. The amulet would be… a shortcut through<br />
which <strong>the</strong> protected person uses <strong>the</strong> magical power of formula not by<br />
chant<strong>in</strong>g it himself, but by show<strong>in</strong>g it, carry<strong>in</strong>g it on his body, by lett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
it act by itself through writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
[In many cases,] <strong>the</strong> text is completely opaque to <strong>the</strong> users, because<br />
<strong>the</strong>y ignore <strong>the</strong> language [of <strong>the</strong> amulet] or writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> general, or just<br />
those particular characters, obsolete <strong>and</strong> unusual. [Here Cardona refers<br />
to <strong>the</strong> Tibetan equivalent of shittan, <strong>the</strong> characters known as ranja or lantsa.]<br />
In this case, <strong>the</strong> circuit excludes completely <strong>the</strong> subject: <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>scription acts on its own… <strong>and</strong> br<strong>in</strong>gs benefits to those who carry it<br />
with <strong>the</strong>m but without <strong>the</strong>ir participation except than <strong>the</strong>ir mere<br />
carry<strong>in</strong>g it.<br />
One could argue that <strong>in</strong> this case <strong>the</strong> circuit has been activated by <strong>the</strong><br />
writer of <strong>the</strong> formula…, even though he asked not for himself but for<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs. This is true <strong>in</strong> many cases…; but often <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription can be<br />
copied, it can be written without be<strong>in</strong>g understood, or it can be<br />
<strong>in</strong>correctly reproduced <strong>and</strong> still cont<strong>in</strong>ue to be active…<br />
