CELEBRATION OF MAY DAY' OR'INTERNATIONAL
WORKERS' DAY'
Every year, on 1st of
May we celebrate the so
called 'WORKERS DAY'.
Do we all know why this
celebration was started?
As usual, all our television
channels telecast movies,
interviews with celebrities,
patti mandrams (debates).
The events shown in
the channels have no
relevance to the real
celebration of this
particular day.
Working men and women
are the foundation of a
society. As Sophacles, a
great philosopher said.
' without labour nothing
prospers. An ardent worker
enjoys his work. He takes
pride in doing his work with
interest and enthusiasm. A
labourer, irrespective of his
field where he works, is to
be treated with dignity and
respect. The underlying
theme of celebrating a
day for the labourers is
to promote the social and
economic achievements of
the working class.
Earlier, the workers had to
work for their employers
more than ten hours. They
had to work in unsafe
conditions in factories
and mills. The workers

தேரந்சதடுக்கும் முறை பல
கட்ங்களாகபிரிக்கபெடடுள
ைத்தடால் இதில்

Until then, they began to
agitate in large numbers.
At a strike by the labourers
organised at Hay market
in Chicago on May 1816.
when the policemen tried
to disperse the crowd,
a bomb was thrown at
the police. The police
force fired at the workers
resulting in the death of
four persons. The result
of the agitation ended
after the following years
with eight hours working
hours was declared for the
working class.
Many countries started
celebrating May 1st
as INTERNATIONAL
WORKERS' DAY. This day
is celebrated in different
months in some countries.
United States Of America
and Canada celebrate
INTERNATIONAL
WORKER' DAY in an
unique way. People
arrange for picnics,
fireworks displays, public
art events are organised
and people enjoy the
events with their families.

1923. Sri. Singaravelu
chettiar who fought for
the right of labourers
made arrangements
for the celebrations.
Throughout the world
'INTERNATIONAL
WORKERS' DAY has been
declared as a National
holiday even though
the celebration falls on
different months.
Leaders greet the workers.
Variety of programmes,
events and parades are held
and speeches are given
by leaders. Do this elite
workers or their leaders do
ever think of any liberation
for the poor children who
work in small industries
where the savouries like
deep fried things are
prepared, match factories,
fireworks units and even
brick kilns or even the
ruthless people who make
them beg at public places
like Bus stands and Railway
stations.
The true human, Sri.
Kailash Satyatri, a Nobel
prize winner , secretary
of the SACCS, fights to
uplift the poor children
from the bonded labour.

Our politicos and caste
leaders who want to fish in
the troubled waters in our
society ever put efforts to
abolish the child labour?
Poverty stricken children
sent with the agents by
their parents are hired
for cheap labour. Even
though Bonded Labour
Abolition Act of 1976 and
Child labour (prohibition
and Regulation Act 1986),
came into existence,
the child labour menace
continues.
What is the use of taking
pledges and conducting
seminars on May Day?
Children who work as
helpers in houses, as bonded
labourers in hazardous
industries like carpet, match,
bangles, fireworks, brass
ware, brick kiln units etc:
children are subjected to
vulnerable physical and
mental exploitations. Abusing
the poor kids, beating
them mercilessly , sexually
exploiting them are being
continued. When will they be
liberated from their bonds?
This year, all have to take
pledge on May day, to
bring real celebration for
the innocent poor children.
Let all the workers, leaders
