9 Other issues to look out for when using survey data Sampling bias • Survey samples are drawn from a master table based on Census 2001 which was updated for the 2007 Community Survey • If Stats SA does not know about a settlement (or if the sampling frame has not been updated) the settlement will not be surveyed Response bias • There may be some incentive for households to respond in certain ways to certain questions. For instance, this may happen if the household believes there is a „right‟ answer or if they think the data will be used for a particular purpose Interpretation of responses • The surveys are not designed with informal settlements in mind. This makes some data difficult to interpret
