Promote increased use of our waterways resource
principally for recreational purposes
In 2008 waterways Ireland continued to develop and implement projects under the
Marketing and Promotion Strategy in order to promote greater awareness of the waterway
system and its recreational use.
4.1 Continue to promote activities on the waterways
to encourage increased use including a programme
of sponsorship, provision of visitor services, and
promotional work in partnership with tourism and
product lead groups. The Sponsorship Programme
provides support to community groups and other
interested waterway related groups to encourage
participation by all sections of the community.
The number of events will depend on the ability of
applicants to satisfy the advertised criteria. It is
anticipated that in the order of 30 events will be
sponsored.
4.1.1 Sponsorship programme
A wide range of events took place on the waterways with support from the Waterways
Ireland Sponsorship Programme, varying from community to sporting events at locations
on all seven waterways. A total of 73 applications for programme funding were received
and 48 events took place, with the majority of events staged during the summer weekends,
including the Waterways Ireland ‘Row for It’ League involving 10 separate locations, the
Waterways Ireland Wakejam, The Grand Canal Offaly Voyage 2008, and TriAthy 2008.
