Sustainer Happenings The JLHR Sustainers ended a great year of activities on a high note with two fun events. On April 12th a hardy group of Sustainers braved some thunderstorms to meet at Terra Restaurant in Peninsula Town Center in Hampton. It was fun sharing tapas plates and interesting new drinks. The food was delicious but the evening spent laughing with friends was just delightful. JLHR President Mandy Eberwine and President Elect Sam Bishop enjoying themselves at the Sustainer Thank You Reception. October with a night of food, wine, shopping, and socializing at Nancy Thomas Gallery in Yorktown. Later in the month we ventured up to Williamsburg for our fall luncheon at the Williamsburg Inn. In November we had a fun evening at Salsa’s in City Center and then later in the month we had our annual Holiday Luncheon and Vendor Market at the James River Country Club. The very next day many boarded the bus for Richmond for the annual Bizarre Bazaar bus trip. We started off 2011 with a wonderful luncheon by the fireplace at Le Yaca in Williamsburg. In February, Casino Night was the place to be for a fun filled evening at the Mariners Museum in Newport News. In March we all enjoyed our first Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show at the JRCC featuring fashions by The Dandelion of Irvington, VA. We ended the year with our dinner at Terra Restaurant in Hampton and the Thank You reception at Pam Minter’s home. Sustainers Midge Eason, Ann Marie Carr and Diane Koun enjoy themselves at the reception. .............................................Mary Johnson, Sustainer Chair 12 On June 1st the Sustainers were honored by the Actives with a Thank You Reception at the lovely home of Pam Minter in Newport News. Everyone enjoyed meeting the Actives who had provided wonderful food and drinks for the evening. We are still talking about the crab dip!! It was a great event to end the year on with so many Sustainers enjoying catching up with old friends. Thank you Pam, for opening up your beautiful home to us and for being such a gracious hostess. Thank you to Beth Doggette and the Nominating/ Placement Committee for providing a terrific evening for the Sustainers. This is always an event that we look forward to and a wonderful way to culminate the league year. This has been a really fun year for the Sustainers with a variety of events that were enjoyed by all who attended. The year started in It has been a very busy but enjoyable year for the Sustainer Committee who has made all of these activities possible through their hard work and dedication to the League. It was our goal to have a variety of events in several cities on the Peninsula so that the Sustainers would have a great year socializing with old friends and meeting new ones. We hope that you feel we accomplished that and that you were able to enjoy yourself if you attended one of the Sustainer events. We are always open to new ideas and suggestions so please let us know what you would like to see on the calendar in the future by contacting Mary Johnson at the League office at 873-0281. A huge thank you to the Sustainer Committee: Sally Sue Andrews, G.G. Buxton, Lisa Candella, Diane Carr, Virginia Darden, Holly Hager, Carrie Karnes, Diane Koun, Christine Mahan, Rita Potter and Donna Wells. This year would not have been possible without all of your enthusiasm and hard work and I so appreciate all that you did to make this year so successful. Junior League of Hampton Roads Is In the Kitchen with David on QVC The Junior League of Hampton Road’s Publication Committee hosted a viewing party on July 13 to watch one of our beloved cookbooks featured on QVC’s In the Kitchen with David. Our award winning cookbook – Virginia Hospitality – was invited to be a part of a Classic Junior League Cookbook collection as a part of a first-ever subscription program featuring Junior League cookbooks from across the country. Much to the delight of the party attendees host David Venable feasted on our delicious Smokehouse Mac and Cheese. The Publications Committee is very pleased to report over 2,500 QVC customers signed up to purchase the cookbooks. Virginia Hospitality is the second book in the subscription and royalties earned from the sale of this amazing cookbook will go directly back into our community and support our signature project. The Publications Committee A Meal to Remember On May 15th, the publications committee gathered in the early afternoon to cook an incredible meal from our collection of cookbooks for the Junior League Member winner of our raffle. The winner was draw from all of our actives and new members who purchased their required cookbooks for the 2010-2011 League year. The meal began with the comforting Hot Virginia Dip and Dig Deep Salad from Virginia Hospitality. For dinner we served two favorites - Shrimp and Grits and Smokehouse Macaroni and Cheese from My Mama Made That. All that was followed by a delicious dessert; warm Peach Cobbler from Very Virginia. This hot meal was delivered to Ashley Forrest and her family later that afternoon. Ashley shared after her meal on Facebook, “Cheers to the cookbook committee - we loved our meal tonight!! Thank you so much for the yummy food from My Mama Made That, Virginia Hospitality and Very Virginia!!!” The publications committee encourages you to consider making this meal the next time you entertain friends or cook for your family. We look forward to putting together more incredible menus this year from our cookbooks for you to sample at home!
