President’s
Musings
Samantha Bishop
As I prepared over the past several
months to begin my role as President of the
League many people have asked me the same
question in different ways. “Are you getting
ready? June is on the way…Are you ready to
be President?…Are you getting nervous?” No! I
wasn’t nervous until everyone started asking!
Then I began to question, should I be? Am I
100% prepared? What is going to happen on June 1st that I am not aware of yet?
I have attended thirteen other Annual banquets, where presidents have come
and gone. I have a hard time remembering their speeches or themes. I really should have listened more!
There have been 117 General Membership Meetings since I’ve been in the league - I’ve only been to maybe
80, why didn’t I go to all of them!
Why didn’t I save (in an organized folder) every agenda, for every meeting, I have ever conducted or
attended? I might need them this year!
I should have gone to that optional leadership class at work - instead of getting a manicure.
Essentially I was becoming a little scared. All I could think about were all the polished and professional
women that have come before me in our League, as well as those I have met at Sustainer events. They are a
hard act to follow! They all use that wonderful “non-profit” lingo so easily.
Words like: Guiding principles, empowerment, grassroots, stewardship…
I don’t think I have ever used the word “stewardship” in a conversation in my life. I kept thinking I don’t
want to disappoint!
Then I started to think….What IF instead of worrying so much about doing everything 100% perfect, and
being disappointed, when something inevitably fails - I just had fun. A foreign concept to many of us over-achievers
I know…But what if I …what if WE …just had a good time BEING in the league, and stopped being concerned
about being perfect.
Think back to the 1960’s, an era of great change - our parent’s instituted change by action not only because
they saw a need, BUT because they enjoyed doing it and being a part of a movement They were speaking out
and helping others - and having a great time in the process. There were no rules, nothing was perfect. No paths,
no agendas, no pie charts…What if we brought the fun back into volunteering.
I want you to think about what you can get out of this year - what you want out of this year. Wouldn’t it be
great to want to come to every meeting - because you look forward to it. To want to sign up for that extra shift -
because you know you’ll have a good time. Many people leave the League and when asked WHY? the standard
response is “I don’t have enough time.” We usually take that as an answer and move on. But last time I looked,
everyone’s day had 24 hours in it. To those people I say - Shame on us! We didn’t make it WORTH your time.
We didn’t make it enjoyable enough that you wanted to come. That’s my goal for 2011-2012; to stop trying to be
perfect and enjoy volunteering again. That is the goal I want to task your new Board and Chairs. The last way
to make the league fun again, is to take advantage of the friendships the Junior League has to offer.”
How do we make this happen? A couple of ways:
First, I think we are on the right track with our fundraising and community projects. We have some great NEW things in the hopper for 2011-2012.
Rummage on the River, also known as “Rummage,” is a terrific Community Fundraiser; you will really get to bond with other members and the community
in an exciting and different way. Touch-a-Truck is going to be amazing - watching a new project develop from the ground up and being a part of it should
be nothing- if not FUN! Continuing our focus work on Women’s Reproductive Cancers is going to educate and enlighten us. You have voted for these
projects- that’s the first step.
Secondly, to steal Beth’s Dogette’s theme for the 2009-2010 league year, ENGAGE. If you are having a tough day, go to a Girls of Excellence event
or offer to work a Community Outreach event at RCC, your problems will go right out the window.
The last way to make the league fun, is to take advantage of the friendships the Junior League has to offer. I have made most of my close friends
from the League and have some of my best memories working on shifts and committees. So make a new friend - maybe come to the GMM at 6, instead
of right before the meeting starts - chat, yuck it up, and make the most of this time. It goes by very quickly.
I’m going to try to be “perfect” for each of you, but I know I will probably fall far from the mark. But the way I can meet all the goals I have set for
myself, is to only make ONE GOAL that will encompass everything else; HAVE FUN AND TRY TO MAKE THIS YEAR FUN FOR OTHERS! I encourage
each of you to do the same.
So…When I come up on this stage 360+ days from now - I am going to ask each of you one question - Did you have fun? I empower all of you to
make sure you and your fellow members can say yes. If we can accomplish that, everything else will not be perfect, but pretty great!
I appreciate that you have entrusted me with the “stewardship” of the organization. Hey! I finally got to use it!
President’s
Reflections
Mandy Eberwine
Who knew a year could pass by
in the blink of an eye?! The night
before our annual dinner, I ran into a
Past-President at the gym and she immediately pointed out
to me how close I was to the end of this journey... and how
close I was to becoming a member of the inspiring and elite
group of ladies known as the Past-Presidents of the Junior
League of Hampton Roads. I can only imagine each of them
also found themselves wondering how a year could pass
by so quickly. It truly has been a blur of agendas, emails,
planning, emails, meetings, emails, phone calls and emails...
but I wouldn’t change a minute of it!
A year ago I challenged each of you to determine your
own personal measures of success for the year. I know you
heard me, because as I look at our members, I see a very
successful group of ladies! I hope you realize how much
2
(Continued on Page 3)

(Continued from Page 2)
we have accomplished and how much GOOD we have done this year. I hope you know how much I appreciate the time, talent and
treasures that each of you have given to the League, as well as to our community.
I want to thank all of the Committee Chairs for your leadership and guidance throughout the year. I might have had the title of
President, but you are the ones who did all of the work. It is humbling to be put in the position to lead a group of women who don’t need
a leader because you are all leaders in your own right.
I would also like to thank Past-Presidents Lee Anne Sulzberger, Sarah Hutchens and Jennifer Dick. I served on the Board for each
of these ladies and learned so much from all of them. Their passion and dedication they showed as leaders...as well as their guidance
and belief in me laid the foundation for me to take on this challenge. I’ve been known to say that you have to be “careful who your
friends are in the League”...because if you surround yourself with enthusiastic leaders, you may find yourself joining their ranks one day!
Speaking of leaders, I was surrounded by a dedicated and dynamic Board of Directors, I could not have asked for a better group of
ladies to work with last year! We have had some fun times... we have made some tough decisions...we have learned... we have nurtured
friendships...we have always kept in mind the mission of the League...and most importantly we have put the Junior League of Hampton
Roads in a position to continue to succeed for years to come. Sam, Talley, Ashley, Rebecca, Kellie, Jen Muse, Jenn Devlin and Molly--it
has been an honor to work with each of you this year and I cannot thank you enough for your time and commitment.
Last but not least, I would like to thank all of you—the Active, New and Sustaining members of the Junior League of Hampton Roads-
-for believing in me and letting me serve as your leader. I can honestly say this placement was never on my radar, but I am so glad I
stepped outside of my comfort zone and said YES when Whitney called two and a half years ago. It has been an incredible journey I
will never forget. THANK YOU!!!
nnual Awards / May Dinner
Janie Radford Dwyer Volunteer Service Award
Lynn McMullin, the recipient of the Janie Radford Dwyer Volunteer Service Award, is an active member of the JLHR who
goes above and beyond the call of duty. She works to make a difference in the league and in the community through her
involvement in numerous volunteer activities
After recently transferring from the Junior League of Louisville, Lynn wasted no time leading us to new heights in many
areas of Finance Council. As Publications Chair, she worked diligently this year to restructure, re-organize and bring “fun”
back to the Cookbook Committee. Not only has she exceeded her goals in both sales and accounts, but her talent to think
outside of the box has played a key role in the success of her committee.
This fall, she and her chair-elect worked diligently to bring cuisine from around the country to our membership through
the new cookbook “swap” program. With the new and exciting books selected, members were once again excited about
purchasing their cookbooks! She also developed the creative “iron-leaguer” competitions, to promote recipes and assist
in the membership’s morale.
Always reaching for new audiences, Lynn was never afraid to try new tasting and wholesale venues. And when shifts
were empty, you could always count on her to fill in the blanks with no complaints. Her perseverance and commitment
to make her committee and the league bigger and better has earned her the right to receive this special award. We look
forward to having her as the Finance VP next year!
Liz Jones Community Commitment Award
Jenn Wong, the recipient of the Liz Jones Community Commitment Award is an active member of the JLHR who is truly
dedicated to volunteerism in the community. She is an active participant in facing issues with families and their well being.
Since 1992, Jenn has been involved in community-based health education and health outreach, both as a volunteer and
professionally. Since moving to the Hampton Roads area in 2002, Jenn has volunteered as an educator in Early Detection
and Prevention programs with the local ACS office and the Health Department on the Peninsula
Cancer Prevention Coalition. She has also served as a Board member for the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Peninsula. Jenn
served as the President of the Family Focus Grafton Parent Advisory Council from June 2005 to June 2008; she has also
been involved in their Sustainability Campaign and co-chaired their inaugural Party Under the Parachutes gala this past Fall.
Her volunteering also continues to her children’s activities where she has served as the Volunteer Chair for the Coventry
Elementary PTA and President for the Peninsula Chinese School’s Traditional School PTA. She has volunteered at her
children’s preschool and with the Sunday School at St. Mark Lutheran Church.
Her enthusiasm and dedication for community service have earned her the right to receive this special award. We look
forward to having her as the Community VP next year!
New Member of the Year
Suzi Israel, the recipient of the New Member of the Year, has displayed team spirit, unparalleled leadership, and contributed
significantly to the overall success of the New Member project. Suzi was unanimously chosen to receive the award by
everyone in this year’s New Member class!
Fellow members who nominated her stated she was their “leader, organizer, motivator, and inspiration and she even
served as the unofficial class president”. Suzi has been the fearless leader of our class project from the very beginning to
the very end. She has a passion to raise awareness about reproductive cancer and had great ideas of how we could do
that on a very broad scale. She is always enthusiastic and has a great vision of what we should do to achieve success.
Her welcoming personality and respect for others enabled the New Member class to truly unite as one.
We are grateful Suzi is part of our organization and we know that in years to come the JLHR will greatly benefit from her
leadership, attitude and excitement to make a difference!
Sustainer Happenings
The JLHR Sustainers ended a great year of activities on a high note with two fun events. On April 12th a hardy group of Sustainers
braved some thunderstorms to meet at Terra Restaurant in Peninsula Town Center in Hampton. It was fun sharing tapas plates and
interesting new drinks. The food was delicious but the evening spent laughing with friends was just delightful.
JLHR President Mandy Eberwine and President Elect Sam Bishop enjoying
themselves at the Sustainer Thank You Reception.
October
with a night of food, wine, shopping, and socializing at Nancy Thomas
Gallery in Yorktown. Later in the month we ventured up to Williamsburg
for our fall luncheon at the Williamsburg Inn. In November we had a
fun evening at Salsa’s in City Center and then later in the month we had
our annual Holiday Luncheon and Vendor Market at the James River
Country Club. The very next day many boarded the bus for Richmond
for the annual Bizarre Bazaar bus trip. We started off 2011 with a
wonderful luncheon by the fireplace at Le Yaca in Williamsburg. In
February, Casino Night was the place to be for a fun filled evening at the
Mariners Museum in Newport News. In March we all enjoyed our first
Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show at the JRCC featuring fashions by
The Dandelion of Irvington, VA. We ended the year with our dinner at
Terra Restaurant in Hampton and the Thank You reception at Pam Minter’s home.
Sustainers Midge Eason, Ann Marie Carr and Diane Koun enjoy themselves
On June 1st the Sustainers were honored by the Actives with a Thank
You Reception at the lovely home of Pam Minter in Newport News. Everyone
enjoyed meeting the Actives who had provided wonderful food and drinks for
the evening. We are still talking about the crab dip!! It was a great event to
end the year on with so many Sustainers enjoying catching up with old friends.
Thank you Pam, for opening up your beautiful home to us and for being
such a gracious hostess. Thank you to Beth Doggette and the Nominating/
Placement Committee for providing a terrific evening for the Sustainers. This
is always an event that we look forward to and a wonderful way to culminate
the league year.
This has been a really fun year for the Sustainers with a variety of events
that were
enjoyed
by all who
attended.
The year
started in
It has been a very busy but enjoyable year for the Sustainer Committee
who has made all of these activities possible through their hard work and
dedication to the League. It was our goal to have a variety of events in
several cities on the Peninsula so that the Sustainers would have a great
year socializing with old friends and meeting new ones. We hope that you
feel we accomplished that and that you were able to enjoy yourself if you
attended one of the Sustainer events. We are always open to new ideas and
suggestions
so please
let us know
what you
would like to
see on the
calendar in
the future by
contacting
Mary
Johnson at the League office at 873-0281. A huge thank you to
the Sustainer Committee: Sally Sue Andrews, G.G. Buxton, Lisa
Candella, Diane Carr, Virginia Darden, Holly Hager, Carrie Karnes,
Diane Koun, Christine Mahan, Rita Potter and Donna Wells. This
year would not have been possible without all of your enthusiasm
and hard work and I so appreciate all that you did to make this year
so successful. We hope that even more Sustainers will be able to
attend one of our events next year. We look forward to seeing you!
Sustainer Carrie Karnes and Active Rebecca Hurt catch up with one another.
Sustainers Sidney Jordan and Martha Goodson enjoy the refreshments at Pam
Minter’s house during the Sustainer Thank You Reception.
