Community Corner
Spring 2011:
In addition to the work of the Committees on the
Community Council, JLHR was able to reach out and make
an impact through our Community Involvement Fund,
Community Opportunity Grant, and Board Bank.
The JLHR donated a total of $2000 from our Community
Involvement Fund to the following individuals and
organizations in the Hampton Roads community:
• Sarah B. Hudgins Foundation ($250) to assist in
efforts to continue improving the lives of adults and
children living with disabilities.
• First Book Hampton Roads ($250) to assist in
efforts to battle literacy and provide children from
low-income families with their first new book.
• Newport News Healthy Families ($250) to assist
in efforts to help the families in their home visiting
program during the holidays.
• The Forrest Family ($250) to assist with their
family’s recovery after losing their home in a house
fire.
• Bucks for Brayden ($500) to assist the family
of JLHR member Janet Holmes with expenses
associated with her son’s cancer treatments at St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
• Page Middle School ($500) gift cards were provided
to help teachers replace supplies lost as a result of
the tornado damage suffered in Gloucester in April
2011.
• A Community Impact Grant of $2000 was
presented to the Downtown Hampton Child
Development Center to assist in purchasing
playground equipment for their new location in the
Mary Peake Center.
The following members represented JLHR on various
boards in the community.

Early Learning Council
Summer 2011:
The 2011 - 2012 Community Council is proud to announce
the launch of Take the Time, Know the Signs: Handbags
for Hope. This traveling art and awareness exhibit will
feature handbags custom decorated by JLHR members,
reproductive cancer patients and cancer caregivers, paired
with information from our Take the Time, Know the Signs
campaign. Mark your calendar for the opening night reception
on the evening of Tuesday, September 27th, at Riverside
Cancer Care Center. The display will travel to Patrick Henry
Mall on Saturday, October 1st, the Williamsburg farmer’s
market on October 8th, and Rummage on the River on
October 15th. More display dates and information will be
available soon!
