Community Corner<br />
Spring 2011:<br />
In addition to the work <strong>of</strong> the Committees on the<br />
Community Council, JLHR was able to reach out and make<br />
an impact through our Community Involvement Fund,<br />
Community Opportunity Grant, and Board Bank.<br />
The JLHR donated a total <strong>of</strong> $2000 from our Community<br />
Involvement Fund to the following individuals and<br />
organizations in the <strong>Hampton</strong> <strong>Roads</strong> community:<br />
• Sarah B. Hudgins Foundation ($250) to assist in<br />
efforts to continue improving the lives <strong>of</strong> adults and<br />
children living with disabilities.<br />
• First Book <strong>Hampton</strong> <strong>Roads</strong> ($250) to assist in<br />
efforts to battle literacy and provide children from<br />
low-income families with their first new book.<br />
• Newport News Healthy Families ($250) to assist<br />
in efforts to help the families in their home visiting<br />
program during the holidays.<br />
• The Forrest Family ($250) to assist with their<br />
family’s recovery after losing their home in a house<br />
fire.<br />
• Bucks for Brayden ($500) to assist the family<br />
<strong>of</strong> JLHR member Janet Holmes with expenses<br />
associated with her son’s cancer treatments at St.<br />
Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.<br />
• Page Middle School ($500) gift cards were provided<br />
to help teachers replace supplies lost as a result <strong>of</strong><br />
the tornado damage suffered in Gloucester in April<br />
2011.<br />
• A Community Impact Grant <strong>of</strong> $2000 was<br />
presented to the Downtown <strong>Hampton</strong> Child<br />
Development Center to assist in purchasing<br />
playground equipment for their new location in the<br />
Mary Peake Center.<br />

Early Learning Council<br />
Summer 2011:<br />
The 2011 - 2012 Community Council is proud to announce<br />
the launch <strong>of</strong> Take the Time, Know the Signs: Handbags<br />
for Hope. This traveling art and awareness exhibit will<br />
feature handbags custom decorated by JLHR members,<br />
reproductive cancer patients and cancer caregivers, paired<br />
with information from our Take the Time, Know the Signs<br />
campaign. Mark your calendar for the opening night reception<br />
on the evening <strong>of</strong> Tuesday, September 27th, at Riverside<br />
Cancer Care Center. The display will travel to Patrick Henry<br />
Mall on Saturday, October 1st, the Williamsburg farmer’s<br />
market on October 8th, and Rummage on the River on<br />
October 15th. More display dates and information will be<br />
available soon!<br />
