Pote’s Notes.....
Al Malaikahan - December 2012
Hello Nobles,
After 7 years in the Divan and the last year writing my article each month for the Al
Malaikahan, I’ve hit a wall. The year is almost over and the events are starting to wind
down. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any. Look at the calendar and try to make plans to attend one
or more events.
The Silver Mounted Patrol POV and the Awesome “A” Shrine Club POV were the last
POVs for this year. The food was delicious the entertainment and fellowship was wonderful.
At the Awesome “A” Shrine Club. When I went up to speak all I could think about was
the last 11 months. I looked back at the parades and the fun I had with the Nobles and
thier families. Spending long weekends with the Divan was like being with my family.
I like this family (and I think they like me). The support and friendship has made it so
special. I knew they had my back; I could always depend on them. I will miss that.
The temple will always need help. Look at Dave Chernik’s “Team Building”.
He will need your support next year; this is not a one-man show. I hope you all will
step up and give Dave the support he needs. The Nobles that helped this year did a
wonderful job. I can’t thank you all enough.
The Ceremonial on the 1st will be the last one this year. I hope to have a good turn out. Since it will be at the
Shriners Hospital for Children in Los Angeles, it is a good opportunity to bring your wife, a friend, or even a special
Master Mason. When they see our hospital they will want to be a part of this great fraternity.
Well, Thanksgiving is over and December is upon us. If I don’t get the pleasure to see you, I wish everyone a happy and
safe holiday season, and a peaceful new year.
Thank You
David Wehmeyer, Potentate
Al Malaikah Shriners Stratigic Plan
Hello, Nobles.
Last month, we looked at the Al Malaikah Strategic Plan. As discussed, some of the Plan’s
strategies have already been implemented. More actions are being planned to help reach our goals.
One of our goals is to increase our new Shriners’ involvement by giving them a better idea
of who we are, what we do, and how we can have a good time doing it. We began pre-Ceremonial
orientations for Candidates in July. We found that most Candidates are not signing up in time to
attend the orientations. Additionally, we want to start providing name tags for new Shriners so we
can learn their names and more about them, which we hope will make them more comfortable
about joining in with our activities. To have name tags for them on the Ceremonial day,
we must have the Candidates signed up at least a few weeks before the Ceremonial. So
the procedure after December’s Ceremonial will be that a Candidate must be registered
no later than 3 weeks before the Ceremonial. If he submits an application after the date
we’ve ordered the name badges, he will be scheduled for the next Ceremonial. What
this means is there will be no more walk-in Candidates accepted for Ceremonials.
This will take a bit more fore-planning on all our parts, but we’re excited about the
possibilities this procedure should open.
In conjunction with this, maximizing Club and Unit participation in Ceremonials and other Shrine events will give you
more opportunities to meet and interact with our new Shriners. Simultaneously, they will have more chances to find out about
you and your activities. This will encourage them to join you, or at least give you more chances to ask them to join if they seem
a bit shy.
I am pleased that I’m receiving comments on past articles and that many of us are sharing more ideas. We will
implement them as rapidly as possible. We still need more bodies to help with this and it’s not too late to let us know you
would like to help out with a particular task.
Thank you all. Have a wonderful holiday season and a successful and fun new year.
Fraternally, Dave Chernik, Chief Rabban
Past Masters Shrine Club
Al Malaikahan - December 2012
Congratulations to the Nobles who have been elected to serve as Officers of the Past Masters Shrine club for 2013:
Kevin Morris PM – President
David Wehmeyer PM – 1st VP
Guy Richmond PM – 2nd VP
John Riblett PM – 3rd VP
Guy Richmond PM – Secretary
Neil Simmons PM – Treasurer
As President, I am very excited about the upcoming year.
We are planning some great events for our members and are beginning to experience a resurgence in interest
in, what once was, the largest Past Masters Shrine Club in the world. Boasting a Charter membership count
of 465, our elite club is the only unit or club with a prerequisite to join – you must be a Master or Past
Master.
We serve a very special function for the Shrine – we are the Ambassadors to the Craft Lodges. We assist
in 3rd° conferrals upon official invitation from our local Masonic Lodges and act as liaisons between the Shrine and Blue Lodge
Freemasonry.
Here are just a few of the events we have initially scheduled for 2013:
*Installation of Officers – Tuesday January 15th at 7pm at the Shrine (Spaghetti dinner to follow).
*POV/BBQ – Sunday July 14th from 10am to 2pm at the Masonic Homes in Covina.
*3rd Degree - Saturday August 31st from 9am to 2pm at the Masonic Homes in Covina.
Note: All PMSC meetings will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7pm at the Shrine Auditorium Unit Dining Room..
If you are a Master or Past Master and would like more information, or would like us to assist in a 3rd Degree conferral for your
Lodge, simply e-mail me at: kevinmorris.pmsc@hushmail.com.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Douglas E. Maxwell Introduces
“Physician Executive Team”
My Dear Fellow Representatives,
In July of this year our Vice President of Medical Affairs, Dr. Peter Armstrong,
retired. The Joint Boards set out to decide if our past medical direction was the right path to go in
the future. In the interim, the Boards formed a “Physician Executive Team” to assist our Medical
Affairs Department during the transition.
Dr. Kenneth Guidera, Chief of Staff of our Twin Cities Hospital, was chosen as the Lead
Doctor, on the new Shriners Hospitals “Physician Executive Team”.
His fellow team members are Dr. Chip Iwinski, Chief of Staff of Lexington, Dr. Kit
Song, Chief of Staff of Los Angeles, and Dr. Richard Kagan, Chief of Staff of Cincinnati.
•Doctor Iwinski’s area of responsibility is for the accuracies of our Medical Departments
Information Systems endeavors.
•Doctor Song’s area of responsibility is to assure Shriners Hospital’s “Quality and Safety” methods, and
•Doctor Kagan’s area of responsibility is for our “Burns Hospitals” issues.
The new directions this team has taken have been met with tremendous support from all of the Shriners Hospital’s
physicians. We congratulate the entire team on their progress and leadership.
At the just concluded Fall Board meeting of the Joint Boards of Shiners Hospitals, a decision was made on a very key
leadership role for the “Home Office in Tampa”…. that of the Chief Medical Officer position.
The “Physician Executive Team” will continue to exist and report to this new position of Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
The Boards are extremely pleased to announce that Dr. Kenneth J. Guidera, has been selected for this position.
Dr. Guidera has over 20 years of experience working in the Shriners Hospitals for Children organization. After initially
being a volunteer surgeon at our Tampa Hospital, he left his private practice to join our health care system full time.
He was soon promoted to Tampa’s Assistant Chief of Staff and then in 2004, advanced to the position of the Chief of
Staff of the Twin Cities Hospital.
Dr. Guidera served in the US Army in Korea and has participated in medical missions in Haiti immediately after that
devastating earthquake, in Armenia, and missions for the Red Cross.
His clinical interests are in the areas of spine and lower extremity surgery. He is a member of several Medical Societies
and involved with numerous Research Projects. Ken is also a Shriner and an “Associate Member” of five Midwestern Temples.
With Dr. Guidera as our Chief Medical Officer, we will continue moving forward in reconstituting the Medical Affairs
Department within the Home Office and will continue to rebuild the functions of the staff based on the new priorities and
directions from our Joint Boards.
We all look forward to working with him in his new role and supporting his
vision for the future of our medical staff and our hospital system.
Please join the Joint Boards in welcoming our new “Chief Medical Officer”,
Dr. Kenneth Guidera.
You Can Help by Becoming a Virtual Shrine Mentor
I
cannot believe it is December already and we are having fun and doing what we like to do. One of the exciting things
about the Shrine is there is always something new or something that has been around for a while that we have not had
time to find out about yet. While outsiders might naturally stay away from such things, Shriners are not afraid to try new
things. Specifically, you can easily become a virtual mentor. All you have to do is visit the website at
WWW.SHRINERSVILLAGE.COM and you will find this and just click on REGISTER HERE button, after registering you
will find very useful information.
Do you remember that special person who made a difference in your life? The person who took the time to ask your
name, introduce you around or show you the ropes? If we’re lucky, we have one person in our lives who has made a positive
impact personally or professionally.
Being a Virtual Mentor is your opportunity to make the same difference in the life of a man on his way to becoming a
Master Mason and Shriner. All it takes is willingness, enthusiasm and time.
Become A Virtual Mentor
As a Virtual Mentor, you will be paired with a Candidate with similar interests in your area. Communicating by phone, e-mail
or in person, you’ll have the opportunity to share your knowledge and enthusiasm about Masonry and about being a Shriner.
You’ll answer questions or concerns, help find the right Lodge best suited to the Candidate’s interests, and help him with his
journey to becoming a Shriner. You will also have the opportunity to make a new friend.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
1. Commit to being active in the Virtual Mentor program for 1 year.
4. Encourage the Candidate to visit local Lodges and the nearest Shrine Temple.
5. Meet the Candidates Lady and introduce her to local brothers and nobles wives.
6. Introduce the Candidate to local Brothers and Nobles.
7. Introduce the Candidate to the local Temple and members.
8. Educate the Candidate about the Road map to becoming a Master Mason.
9. Educate the Candidate about the Road map to becoming a Shriner.
10. Introduce the Candidate to local Masonic and Temple events. Attend with him if able.
11. Introduce the Candidate to Temple members and to Clubs and Units.
12. Communicate regularly with the Candidate and make sure he is getting his needs met and that he is getting
properly educated about our fraternity.
13. Login and update your Candidate communications in Shriners Village Virtual Mentor program.
Knowledge & Skill Required
