Potentate’s Thank You
Al Malaikahan - Year End 2009/January 2010
It seems like yesterday that I was appointed 2nd Ceremonial Master in
2003. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your Potentate
time sure flies when you are having fun. First Lady Katie and I would
like to thank everyone for all the many courtesies and kindnesses extended
to us throughout the year. We appreciate the respect and love shown to us
throughout the year.
Nobles and Ladies, at the beginning of the year we were given
a challenge too raise enough funds to add an addition to our current
Shriners Hospital a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). We the
Nobility and our Ladies accepted the challenge with all our Hearts. The
goal is to raise $1.4 million to date approximately $670 thousand has
been raised. When the Nobility has been challenged we have always
responded in a big way. Shriners Hospital for Children Los Angeles
was completed and opened in 1952 with monies that were raised by Al
Malaikah Shriners; since we have
opened over 50 thousand children
have been treated at our hospital.
The Nobility and there
ladies has accepted the challenge.
Providing the PICU addition will
allow continuing our mission to
take care of our children with
the best possible medical care,
nothing is more important.
I especially want to thank
my Lady Katie for her support
and dedication the past seven
years.
Nobles and Ladies,
again “Thank You” for all your
hard work in supporting our
philanthropy. It is because of your
dedication and hard work that our
Shrine Clubs, Units, Temple, and
Hospitals continue to thrive.
God Bless You All
“Masonic labor is purely a labor of love. He who seeks to draw Masonic wages in gold and
silver will be disappointed. The wages of a Mason are earned and paid in their dealings
with one another; sympathy that begets sympathy, kindness begets kindness,
helpfulness begets helpfulness, and these are the wages of a Mason.”
Life Membership Makes The Perfect Gift!
The Holiday season is here! Have you been
wondering what gift to give the Shriner
who has everything? How about a Life
Membership to Al Malaikah Shrine? A Life
Membership in Al Malaikah Shrine is an ideal
gift to present to a father, son, husband or friend.
You can purchase a total life membership
for $1,115.00. This includes P.C.M.
(permanent contributing member)
for Shriners Hospitals For
Children. Each Life
Membership comes
with a handsome
certificate that can be
framed and proudly
displayed.
When you
give the gift of a Life
Membership, all dues and per
capita fees will be paid during
the course of your favorite
Shiner’s life. With this wonderful gift you are not
only giving to your favorite Shriner but also to his
beloved philanthropy and his fraternity as well. He’ll
never have to worry about increased dues including
hospital dues and his Life Membership goes into
a secured investment fund that cannot be touched.
Al Malaikah Temple only receives the interest
generated from this fund each year.
As an option to the Nobles, a payment plan
has been set up for a scheduled 12 payments of
$100 each month. With your initial payment, your
dues are included for the current year. For more
information or payment plan arrangements, please
contact the Shrine Office (213) 748-0173.
There is no better time to give the gift of a
Life Membership to that special Shriner.
Nobles, they also make a great gift to give
yourself! This is a worthwhile investment that
“Keeps on Giving”!
Do you want to be active in Al Malaikah Shrine? Do you want to make a
difference? Are you tired of sitting on the sidelines and want to become
one of the guys who makes it all happen? Now is you chance. We are
looking for new members in the Oasis Patrol. We do the following: we escort
the Potentate where ever he goes; we lead all parades and carry the flags to start
everything off; we collect, guard, and process the candidates at the ceremonials;
and we also pitch in and help out where ever it is necessary to make the various
events happen. We proudly wear our Unit Fez with the tassle on the right side
(the only nobles in the entire Shrine allowed to do so), and we have a dress
uniform and a parade uniform (both supplied by Al Malaikah).
If you are interested in becoming one of the proud Patrolmen that
are making a difference in Al Malaikah, please with either myself or our Unit
Secretary. We will gladly invite you to one of our dinners and explain everything
in detail. Applications can be found on the web site www.almalaikah.com under
Falling Through The Cracks
Nobles & Ladies
Al Malaikahan - Year End 2009/January 2010
This is written as an attempt to solve a problem which should be a serious concern of all Shriners and Masons.
Associated with every institution is a set of ideas, believes, knowledge and “lore” which is commonly referred
to as an ideology. Communication determines individual behavior by providing both meaning and goals: Such
understanding of our goals is the norm and, individual depend on these goals to be motivated to do what is correct.
Shared understanding, communication, and motivation should support our combined efforts to keep in touch with all
past, retired and forgotten Masons
and Shriners. The forgetting or ignoring of two old debilitated members came to my attention recently in our area of
Palm Springs. One Noble Mason died alone in obscurity in a Palm Springs rest home (Noble William Brewer - past
president of the Citrus Shrine Club) and another who served our brotherhood (Shriner-Jester-Shrine Club President,
etc., for many years (Noble Julian Stiff), who also died unknown to us and without a Masonic send-off. When we lose
members of our Masonic family, we should encourage one another by picking up the fallen tools of these brothers and
putting them back to work. We should unite among ourselves to keep in touch with all Masons.
On another level, I see many new recruits come through our lodge for their first, second and third degrees and then
disappear entirely. We need to have an in-house committee to include a Shriner that keeps in personal daily contact
with these new brothers and encourages them to participate in our lodge, otherwise they are “left out in the cold”, and
thus they also have “fallen through the cracks”.
One of the things that holds our brotherhood fraternity together is the fact that our members should attribute their
meaning of Masonry to our combined thinking which should be perceived in a shared and united manner. The
symbols of Masonry remind us of our Creator’s blueprint and plan for successful living. We should understand that
when we, as Masons, apply divine principles to our life, our brotherhood, family and nation will become a better place
for all of us to enjoy.
As a brotherhood we have learned by example and experience the blessing of charity and the mark that it will leave
upon the earth.
The most important thing about our brotherhood is to ensure communication and unity among all of its members. We
are bound together by our obligations. We have pledged ourselves to right thinking and therefore right doing.
Masons should remember that we are bound together by our obligations to keep in touch with ALL members,
previous and past, and not to allow any member to “fall through the cracks” and therefore become forgotten.
We are bound together by our symbols and predestined contribution to charity. No past or present brother or Noble
should ever be forgotten. Illustrious Sir Ron Bianchi stated recently that we all “need to make personal contact with
Nobles who have fallen by the wayside” - to ensure they do not “fall through the cracks” forever.
Yours in Faith,
Noble Don Cook, President Palm Springs Shrine Club and Imperial Ambassador
We know that money is tight, the economy is really in the dulls and prices keep going up.
You know that 1st class postage alone has increased 2 or 3 times in the last several years.
We can now safely estimate that 20% of our members have provided us with their eMail addresses and they are now receiving
short, timely messages from the Potentate, Divan, the Recorder’s office and others. eMail is timely...you get Al Malaikah and Imperial
information as it becomes available.
As you read this, we will be converting our present and most cumbersome eMail system to Constant Contact, the same
software Imperial and a lot of other large organizations use to make them more efficient.
Nobles, if you already receive Al Malaikah eMails, stop and go no further!
If you’ve gotten to this paragraph and have eMail access, please send a quick message (your name and eMail address) to
The 100 Million Dollar Club
The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have provided
lifesaving and life-changing medical care to more than
800,000 children — without cost to them or their families.
The money to provide these needed services at 22
hospitals comes from many sources: community donations;
fundraising events; investment income; and support from the
Shriners of North America.
As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals
needs your help, more than ever, to continue to provide more
specialized care, offer medical education and conduct more
research. Too many people believe that if they cannot donate
or leave a large sum or money, their gift will not count. Every
contribution helps. In order to encourage donors to contribute
to Shriners Hospitals for Children, the HUNDRED MILLION
DOLLAR CLUB was established in 1972. The club is named
for its goal of adding 100 million dollars to the endowment
fund through gifts or bequests of $100 or more.
How To Join
There are three ways to become a member of the
100 Million Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or more
to Shriners Hospitals for Children; (2) By having your will
include a bequest of $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for
Children; or (3) By adding a provision to an existing will
leaving $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Shriners, please fill out the form on the right and send your
contribution to Al Malaikah Shrine’s Recorder Tom Reoch.
What You Receive
Each donor receives a handsome 100 Million Dollar
Club certificate. By contributing $100, you can feel like a
million, knowing that you have helped to ensure that Shriners
Hospitals for Children will be able to continue helping
children in the years to come.
