Pote’s Notes.....
Hi Nobles!
The circus is coming to town! That’s right! Right here at
our own Shrine Auditorium! A huge two ring circus right on
our stage. You have got to see it! April 8th, 9th and 10th. Check out the
times and information on page # 6 in this magazine. It never ceases to
amaze me how so many Nobles can come together for so long a
period of time and do so much work as they do at Al Malaikah
Circus time. Maybe it’s all the smiles on the happy faces of the
children they are helping. That’s all I need. You still have time
to become a Circus Mommy and Daddy.
Shelley is selling dove pins and flag pins for her
charity project this year. The proceeds will benefit the cleft
lip and palate program at the Los Angeles Shriner’s Hospital
for Children. It is amazing to see the reconstruction work performed on the faces of these
children who through facial bone distortion have problems eating, drinking and sometimes
breathing. Please help make them whole again.
I have had a coin struck to finance a scholarship fund I am starting for Demolay. In
these troubled times and the rising costs of tuition and books a young man needs all of the
help available to get a college education.
Looking forward to May we have the Palm Springs Getaway Ceremonial at the Hilton Hotel,
May 13th – 15th. I have invited El Bekal to join us for this fun weekend. I have added the
Hillbilly Degree and the Palm Springs Follies to the weekend.
May 21st is the First Ladies Luncheon at the Odyssey Restaurant in Mission Hills.
We had a great ceremonial in Oxnard on March 5th . We initiated 20 new nobles
and restored 2 more. Your Ritual Staff did a fantastic job! Stagecraft and Masquers had
everything looking great and the Patrol kept the candidates in line. Almost all of the units and
staff were represented; Koppers Clowns, Hosts and Guard. Thanks go to the nobles at the
registration table, to Dr. Gorchynski for making sure all of the novices had a heartbeat and
to Noble Armando Suarez for manning the merchandise table. A big THANK YOU goes to
Oxnard Masonic Lodge for allowing us to use their facilities.
You still have time to get those candidates in. There are still four more ceremonials this
year, May 14th in Palm Springs, August 13th at the Shrine Auditorium, October 7th in Arroyo
Grande and December 3rd at the Los Angeles Shriners Hospital for Children.
Yours in the faith
Assistant Rabban’s Plans
Communication is one of the keys for success. Often we take for granted that
others know what is in our minds. Perhaps we believe they have already
done what we are asking them to do again. Perhaps we impart the same
memories we have to others. But many times, this does not match reality.
For example, there are many Nobles who are not familiar with how to get
to the Shrine Auditorium because they have never come down on their own, have
not done so for many years, or don’t do it often enough to be comfortable driving
in an unfamiliar area. These Nobles are important to the Fraternity and should not
be ignored. Rather, they should be given a helping hand in what ever way
possible to make their next visit to the Shrine Auditorium as pleasant
and worry-free as possible. Explicit directions for parking and which
building entrance to use is part of it. Having greeters at the door is
even better.
Another example is to share with others the fun and good
fellowship you have at your Unit or Club activities. You certainly
know how good it is to get together as a tight-knit group. But it is
a rare person who feels comfortable just jumping into a different
group and meeting the people. So publicize what your groups are
doing (the Al Malaikahan or the website are ideal for this), extend a friendly invitation to others to join,
and be ready to greet them warmly and make them feel as comfortable as possible the first time they attend.
Keep an eye out for someone you may not know and get friendly with them. They are extending themselves
to find out about your group and your effort will help get them to come back again.
Notes from the Strategic Planning Committee: We are analyzing the Al Malaikah Shriners
demographics by residence (city or, if a large city, by zip code) and by age range to see if there are ways
to better serve existing members and identify areas we might target for increased membership. More
information on this will be shared in the future. As always, if you have any suggestions for the Committee,
please contact me.
The 100 Million Dollar Club
The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have
provided lifesaving and life-changing medical care to more
than 800,000 children — without cost to them or their
families.
The money to provide these needed services at 22
hospitals comes from many sources: community donations;
fundraising events; investment income; and support from
the Shriners of North America.
As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals
needs your help, more than ever, to continue to provide
more specialized care, offer medical education and conduct
more research. Too many people believe that if they cannot
donate or leave a large sum or money, their gift will not
count. Every contribution helps. In order to encourage
donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals for Children, the
HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR CLUB was established
in 1972. The club is named for its goal of adding 100
million dollars to the endowment fund through gifts or
bequests of $100 or more.
How To Join
There are three ways to become a member of the
100 Million Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or more
to Shriners Hospitals for Children; (2) By having your will
include a bequest of $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for
Children; or (3) By adding a provision to an existing will
leaving $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Shriners, please fill out the form on the right and send your
contribution to Al Malaikah Shrine’s Recorder Tom Reoch.
What You Receive
Each donor receives a handsome 100 Million
Dollar Club certificate. By contributing $100, you can feel
like a million, knowing that you have helped to ensure that
Shriners Hospitals for Children will be able to continue
helping children in the years to come.
“2 B 1 Ask 1”
A
woman was being tailgated by a stressed out man on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned
yellow just in front of her. She did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk even though she could
have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.
The tailgating man was furious and honked his horn, screaming in frustration as
he missed his chance to get through the intersection, dropping his cell phone and
spilling his coffee. As he was still in midrant, he heard a tap on his window and
looked up into the face of a very serious police officer.
The officer ordered him to exit the car with his hands up. He took him the
police station where he was searched, finger printed, photographed, and placed
in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and
opened the door. He was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting
officer was waiting with his personal effects. He said “I’m very sorry for the
mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn,
flipping off the person in front of you, and cussing a blue sreak at her. I
noticed the Masonic Square and Compass sticker, the “2 B 1 Ask 1”
bumper sticker and the Shrine Emblem on the trunk. Naturally,
I assumed you had stolen the car” Remember your Masonic
teachings in the world with out.
MARK SATURDAY MAY 14th on your Calendar.
As we start to prepare for summer let us all make a concerted effort, to not only attend our Palm
Springs Ceremonial but to bring in new candidates.
This Ceremony, being held in Palm Springs is the ideal place to have it, not only does it let the new
members from the Inland Empire, get the feeling of what we as Shriners do, it gives them the
chance to see that Shriners, no matter where in Southern California wants the message to
get out that we care about the Children and support our Hospitals.
Plan on spending the weekend in this beautiful area of Southern California.
There are great activities to take advantage off, the weather at this time of year is perfect,
make theextra effort, to come down and show your support for the new Candidates, your
Potentate, your fellow Nobles in Palm Springs, surrounding areas and most importantly
your support for Shriners Hospital for Children.
Stand Tall let the World know what we as Shriners do and remember our pleasure in
life is seeing the smiles on children we have helped.
Look forward to meeting with you and your Candidate or Candidates on
Saturday May 14th 2011.
