THE RIGHT FIRM
Lateral partner teams come to Baker & Hostetler to expand
their practice and the services they can offer to clients.
John Weber and 28 other
attorneys and staff from his IP
firm joined Baker & Hostetler.
After practicing intellectual
property law for 20 years,
mainly in “boutique” firms,
Weber had the feeling that
something was missing from his
practice.
He didn’t want to change the focus of
his practice; he wanted to be able to offer
his clients representation in other areas,
such as antitrust and labor.
“All we could do was intellectual
property and we were passing up a lot of
opportunities,” Weber said.
The lateral additions instantly fortified
the Baker & Hostetler Intellectual Property
practice, which now counsels clients in
patent prosecution and litigation. The
expansion has had a positive effect on the
attorneys.
“Lateral hires bring work to a firm and
thus more opportunity,” Weber said.
John H. Weber
Intellectual Property
Washington, D.C., Office
Nancy L. Patterson
Employment and Labor
Houston Office
Nancy Patterson and three
associates joined the Houston
office after an intensive search
to find a firm that would be a
good fit.
“Baker & Hostetler had a well-established
Employment and Labor practice and
an aggressive growth strategy, which included
hiring laterals,” Patterson said.
“A lot of firms are content with their institutional
clients and don’t see the need to hire
as many laterals, who bring in new business.”
Patterson, who is included in the 2003-
2004 edition of The Best Lawyers in America,
is a solid supporter of lateral hiring because
it generates new work and greater opportunity
for young lawyers. With the addition of
Patterson and the other associates, the firm’s
Houston office is now recognized as having
one of the top groups of employment and
labor attorneys in the city and the state.
“Large companies will only hire firms
with a national presence and practice,”
Patterson said. “Firms that want to reach
that status not only grow their talent, but also
bring in experienced talent.”
The Right Time
Executive Partners Steve Kestner and Alec Wightman were elected to lead the firm
beginning January 1, 2004. Their vision for growth makes this the right time.
We have a culture of
great character
and respect for each other.
“We will pursue accelerated growth, not for
growth’s sake, but growth that makes Baker &
Hostetler a greater law firm,” said Kestner at
the firm’s 2004 Partners Retreat. Among the
reasons he cited for growth were the necessity
to remain competitive as a national firm, to
attract and retain top legal talent, to add
expertise to gain new business from current
clients, to reach new clients, to spread the cost
of technology and to increase revenues and
profits. “But possibly just as important as these
strategic and competitive reasons to grow, we
know it is more exciting to work at a growing
and dynamic firm.
“We need to be strong on the coasts—in
Los Angeles, in New York, and in Washington,
D.C.,” Kestner said. “We currently have
exceptional lawyers in those locations, but we
need to have a larger critical mass to be on the
radar screen in those cities.” Kestner and
Wightman said that the firm will continue to
pursue growth through lateral partner hires,
practice group acquisitions, expansion into
new locations and mergers.
They stressed that growth opportunities
will be considered only if they enable Baker &
Hostetler to retain its character. “It’s all
about the culture,” Kestner said.
THE RIGHT TIME
STRENGTHS TO BUILD UPON
Lateral partners Steven Goldberg and Jim Mercadante joined
Baker & Hostetler’s New York office. Their strong transaction
experience, combined with the firm’s already- established corporate
practice, became the subject of a feature article in The Deal, a
respected publication for dealmakers worldwide.
The article, entitled Baker & Hostetler’s Practice Stretches
Beyond its Middle Market and Regional Focus, demonstrates how
lateral partners joining Baker & Hostetler benefit from the firm’s
national practice platform.
STRATEGIC PRACTICE GROWTH
Our growing Government Policy Practice is part of the firm’s
70-attorney Tax Group, led by lateral partner Jeffrey Paravano, who
returned to Baker & Hostetler after serving in the U.S. Department of
Treasury as Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy.
Recent lateral additions to the practice include practice leader
Tom McDonald, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Zimbabwe,
former Congressman Dennis Eckart and former Education Department
Deputy Assistant Secretary Raymond Pierce.
MEETING CLIENT NEEDS
Baker & Hostetler’s Litigation Group has added strong laterals in
areas of growing client need. Six former federal prosecutors, including
Jim Wooley (at right), put the firm ahead of nearly every national firm
in its ability to advise and represent the increasing number of corporations,
their executives and directors coming under regulatory scrutiny.
The team includes George Stamboulidis, who was recently
appointed by the Justice Department to serve as independent monitor of
Merrill Lynch and Marc Powers, who represented Douglas Faneuil, the
government’s key witness in the Imclone—Martha Stewart case.
LONG-TERM STABILITY
“In 1979, my firm in Orlando, Mesmer,
Robbinson, Ball & Fulton, merged with
Baker & Hostetler. The national platform
and strong presence in Central Florida
helped all of us build our practices and
professional careers. The cultures were
an ideal fit and both organizations
have flourished.”
COMMITMENT T O DIVERSITY
We are committed to increasing the value of our firm’s service and culture
by increasing the diversity of our firm. This is why we established a Diversity
Committee which is chaired by the firm’s Executive Partner and composed of
attorneys and management from each of our offices.
Paul D. White Scholarship
In memory of our late partner, Paul D. White, an annual scholarship
was established for first- or second-year (depending on individual office
need) minority law students of African-American, Hispanic, Asian-
American, or American Indian descent.
Baker & Hostetler Minority Attorney Conference
Our firm hosts an annual conference to help Baker & Hostetler
minority attorneys develop professional and personal skills to foster
success.
Minority Law Journal
“In 2001 the firm embarked on a shopping spree, bringing on six
minority lateral partners over the next two years. Thanks to these
hires—as well as associates of color who came up through the
ranks—6.5 percent of Baker & Hostetler’s partners are now minorities,
a proportion that’s well above the national average for large
firms.”
