Baker Hostetler—The law firm of choicefor the nation’s leading law school studentsProfessional DevelopmentWe invest in our lawyers. In providing training, meaningfulwork assignments, mentoring and feedback, we arecommitting to your success.Workplace of ChoiceTop students at leading law schools choose Baker Hostetlerfor the opportunity to do substantive, challenging work in acollegial and collaborative environment, while having somefun and a life outside of work.We are committed to hiring and retaining talented, diverselawyers with a passion for success—for themselves and forour clients.

Washington, D.C., summer associate Rick Bold, standingsecond from right, with summer associates, JonathanHenry, Jared Iverson and Derek Lacarrubba, left to right.Seated are summer associates Kimberly Fox, left, andPamela Dorsey.Without question, Baker exceeded my expectations thissummer. The attorneys were genuinely good-natured andsupportive, the work was highly substantive and tailored toour interests, and the social events were classy, fun, andoften involved uncommon opportunities in D.C.With only a handful of summer associates, the experienceseemed more collegial than what one might find at largerfirms. Also, because cases are not overstaffed, I regularlyfound myself working on real, substantive matters eitherdirectly with a partner, or alongside one other associate.I never expected that I would be personally interviewingwitnesses on-site for a client’s tort case, or making a presentationin front of 30 people at the firm’s monthly litigationmeeting, but this summer I did both.Rick Bold2008 Washington, D.C., summer associateUniversity of Pennsylvania

Training and MentoringBaker Hostetler is committed to training and professionaldevelopment for all of our new attorneys—whether first-yearassociates or laterals.Associate AcademyFour days of intensive seminars and training for firstyearassociates, including:— Business development— Career development— Communication skills— Effective legal negotiation— Firm management and culture— Professional liabilityOrientation and Mentoring ProgramOur mentoring program matches each first-yearassociate and lateral associate with a mentor whoassists in his or her training and development.Associates are advised of their progress on a regularbasis. This ensures they have the feedback they needto move forward in their careers. For new associates, these reviews are ongoing, with formal, writtenevaluations occurring semiannually.Mid-Level TrainingDuring an associate’s third or fourth year, he or sheparticipates in a multiday training program targeted tothe associate’s developing practice.

New York associate Francesca Harker, center, with BethHowe, left and Christy Monier, right, at the 2009 AssociateAcademy. The Associate Academy was perfectly organized to allowassociates to interact and develop friendships that willbenefit us for years to come. While the days were full, there was just the right mix of workand fun to keep the program flowing and interesting. Ourfirst event was a wine tasting which was both informativeand a perfect way for everyone to interact and get to knowone another. The most valuable aspect, for me, was a communicationworkshop. In law school, we all learned to write perfectlyorganized memos—laying out our key points upfront, recapping the issue to be addressed, and then logicallyorganizing the memo so it is easy for the reader. After Istarted working I realized that most partners prefer thatyou simply tell them what your research has revealed ratherthan drafting a memo.In the short term, I will benefit by having more confidence inmy work product and my position in the Firm. In the future,I will benefit by having colleagues in practice areas throughoutthe Firm that I feel comfortable contacting when I needassistance. In addition, I gained valuable skills regardingnegotiation strategy and communication with both clientsand partners.Francesca M. HarkerNew York associateUniversity of Michigan

2008 Los Angeles summer associates, Karen Law, left, with Bonnie Kwon.During my interviews, I was told that I would receive ‘real’and ‘challenging’ work. Baker Hostetler has not disappointedme and has definitely exceeded my expectations for thissummer. I have worked on a wide range of issues dealingwith administrative law, class action claims, environmentallaw, trademark infringement, real estate contracts, andemployment litigation.Even though Baker is a large Firm, I’ve been given theopportunity to draft actual motions, attend depositions, interact with clients, and observe trial preparations. Partnersand associates are constantly giving practical advice andfeedback concerning client correspondence, efficientresearching and how to balance legal work with communityoutreach projects.
