Mock Trial Programs: Real Cases, Real Judges, Real Experience
How often do law students get to argue a case in a real courtroom? How often do they learn
what it is like to be a witness in a trial? Summer associates in New York and Orlando are
given those very opportunities through the mock trial programs run by those offices.
In New York, summer
associates Patrick
Campbell (New York Law
School), Deborah Kaplan
(University of Virginia),
Tarsha Luke (Georgetown
University) and Rebecca
Thalberg (Stanford University)
participated in a mock
jury trial held at the New
York City Bar Association
before litigation partner
William F. Kuntz, II.
New York litigation partners
Paul Eyre, George
Stamboulidis, Lauren
New York mock trial: Justin Shigemi; Ian Murphy; John Carney; Rebecca Thalberg;
Tarsha Luke; William F. Kuntz, II; Anagha Apte; Patrick Campbell; Ona Wang; Deborah
Kaplan; Lauren Resnick; George Stamboulidis; Tracy Cole and New York Partner-in-
Charge Paul Eyre.
Resnick, John Carney, Tracy Cole and Ona Wang acted as coaches and jurors, and first-year associates
Anagha Apte and Justin Shigemi played witnesses for the plaintiff and defendant.
The case, entitled Awkward Anagha v. Shigemi Shipping, followed the facts of a personal injury case
handled by the New York office three years ago. Patrick Campbell and Deborah Kaplan were attorneys for
the Plaintiff, preparing and meeting with their “client” in the weeks before trial. Defense counsel Tarsha
Luke and Rebecca Thalberg interviewed and prepared the police officer (played by Justin Shigemi) who
drafted the accident report.
“In the New York office, you really feel like you are working in a small New York law firm, but at the same
time enjoying ‘large firm’ benefits and resources. Partners and associates alike genuinely care about your
progress and workload. The senior associate mentors have really played an active role in helping me
make the transition to a law firm environment, making sure that my workload is manageable and
rewarding, and listening to my problems and providing valuable advice. I really feel like they have taken
me under their wing.”
Baker Hostetler: A Workplace of Choice
At Baker Hostetler, we want the law students who join us as summer associates to be challenged by
the work, gratified by their interaction with our lawyers and confident that they made the right decision
in beginning their legal careers with us.
We strive to provide an experience that is representative of what it means to be Counsel to Market
Leaders. From firm culture to training and professional development to social and cultural activities,
the summer experience is designed to expose students to the various components that comprise “life
at Baker Hostetler.”
From the Office to the Courtroom to the Baseball Diamond:
Summer Associates Experience All Baker Hostetler Has to Offer
Summer associates in Baker Hostetler’s offices across the country encounter a variety of opportunities
and activities during their time at the firm—both inside and outside the firm’s walls.
Beyond the basic office orientation and training sessions (computers, library, Westlaw, etc.), we provide
more in-depth information on the type of matters our firm and lawyers handle. The social outings
go beyond a traditional “Happy Hour” and involve summer associates, associates and partners. Some
of the work-related and social events that take place across our offices include:
• Courthouse visits
• Practice Group “roundtables”
• Attending depositions
• Industry team meetings (Intellectual Property, Hospitality, etc.)
• City tours
• Museum tours
• Group dinner/picnic with partners
• Golf outings
• Professional sports games
• Music concerts
• Wine tasting
Washington, DC
In Washington, D.C., summer associates were
treated to a reception with Supreme Court Justice
Scalia, a visit to the Spy Museum, attended
a performance of “The Magic Flute” at Catholic
University, which included a reception with the
opera’s cast afterward, and enjoyed our national
pastime at a Bowie Baysox baseball game (the
Class AA Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles).
Denver
Summer associates in the Denver office took part
in a number of unique learning opportunities,
including participation in a “Get Organized And
Get Things Done – Practical Time Management
for Summer Associates” seminar, attending a
citywide panel discussion on “Diversity in the 21st
Century,” and meeting with U.S. District Court
Senior Judge, John L. Kane. The associates
finished off their summer experience by acting as
jurors in a mock trial held in the office courtroom.
“The attorneys have not hesitated to treat me
like a real associate. From attending court
hearings to writing motions to presenting at
client breakfasts, I have worked on a wide array
of projects. At the same time, I have had the
occasion to socialize with a fantastic group of
people, attend firm and citywide events, and
“The office has a great combination
of professionalism and collegiality.
Each and every attorney I worked
with during my summer was
genuinely interested in helping me
learn what it means to be a legal
professional. Because I do not
know what type of law I want to
practice, the training luncheons
with each practice group were
particularly valuable. They gave us
an opportunity to hear about the
practicalities of practicing law in
each group that they do not teach
you in law school.”
accessible, and more than willing to help craft your summer into a mutually beneficial and educational
opportunity.”
Baker&Hostetler LLP
In addition to the Mock Trial experience in New York, summer associates in the Big Apple attended
programs sponsored by “Human Rights First” and the New York City Bar, which introduced them to pro
bono opportunities and projects, enjoyed a night at Gotham Comedy Club, a scavenger hunt and a
performance of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.”
Orlando
In Orlando, in addition to the Mock Trial program,
the six summer associates were exposed
to various aspects of the profession with a visit
to the federal courthouse, participation in the
office retreat, and sitting in on practice group
and industry team meetings.
Social outings provided the opportunity for them
to meet and get to know our Orlando lawyers
and included an indoor Putt-Putt tournament,
bowling, a day at Disney World/Epcot Center,
and dinners with partners.
“Very few firms provide a balance of education,
training, hands-on experience, and social
interaction. That is where Baker Hostetler excels.
Not only did the Orlando partners and associates
instruct me on various nuances regarding my
respective assignments, but they provided
feedback and follow-up inquiries which allowed me to see several projects through from start to finish.
“It is an exhilarating feeling to see large parts of a final product come directly from one’s own research
and interim work, especially while in an environment that one looks forward to working in every day.
The environment in the Orlando office is not only one that is conducive to the understanding and
professional practice of law, but equally serves to build lasting camaraderie firmwide among
colleagues, both in and out of the office.”
State). Back row (l to r): Robert Haffke (Case Western
Reserve University), Anthony Rodriguez (University of
Florida), and Joshua Lynch (Vanderbilt University).
Los Angeles
Los Angeles summer associates Christine Kim (Georgetown University) and
Dawn Kennedy (USC) were kept very busy, with challenging work assignments
and opportunities to spend time outside the office getting to know the
office’s attorneys. Visits to the Magic Castle, the Getty Villa and the Hollywood
Bowl provided a relaxing and enjoyable time for all.
Participating in the “Public Counsel” program, assisting impoverished people
to obtain emergency food and shelter benefits through the General Relief
and Food Stamps programs, afforded Christine and Kim a perspective on the
work that can be done outside the office to benefit the local community.

Houston
LEAP
The six Houston summer associates, who attend The University of Texas Law School or the University
of Houston Law Center, spent the first six weeks of their summer working with our lawyers on a variety
of projects, including research memorandums, revision of contracts, pleadings, motions and deposition
summaries. They also learned more about the firm and the Houston office through their associate
mentors and lunch meetings with the various practice teams.
Outside of the office, activities were wide-ranging and included a cooking class, bowling, movie night,
wine tasting and a New Orleans-style “Jazz Fest” hosted by a Houston partner.
Cincinnati
Summer associates in our Cincinnati office took a “road trip”
and had the opportunity to meet their fellow summer associates
from the Columbus office at a golf outing. They also
took a break from their summer assignments with a dinner
with Cincinnati associates, a Counting Crowes/Goo Goo Dolls
concert, a Cincinnati Reds baseball game and a party at
Partner-in-Charge Bill Appleton’s home.
“I’m very grateful for the opportunities I had at Baker Hostetler
this summer. I had the privilege of working with extremely
talented attorneys in several different areas of law. Rather than
just researching, I was able to draft motions, attend depositions,
and assist with a pro bono project. I truly appreciate how much
the attorneys went out of their way to ensure I understood
projects and to make me feel welcome.”
“roundtable” sessions with the various practice groups, as well as interacting with associates and partners
at a variety of social events, including: tour of the city with their firm mentor, “Gallery Hop” in the
Short North, Columbus Crew soccer game, “Zoofari” event at the Columbus Zoo, tour of Franklin
County Courthouse and an office golf outing.
In Orlando, summer associates had a very “hands on” experience as they played the roles of witnesses
in a trial which was held in the courtroom of the Orange County Courthouse, with Judge Rom W.
Powell, Senior Retired Judge, presiding over the case.
Orlando associates acted as counsel for the plaintiff and defendant in the case, Homestead Properties,
Inc., v. Manhattan Fire & Casualty. Summer associates Robert Haffke (Case Western Reserve University),
Alissa Lugo (University of Florida), Tarsha Luke (Georgetown), Joshua Lynch (Vanderbilt
Summer Associates Bartend for Charity
Cleveland office summer associates joined summer associates from
nine other Cleveland law firms for the Second Annual Summer
Associate Charity Event. Sponsored by the Law Placement Association
of Cleveland (LPAC), summer associates were volunteer
bartenders at a local hotspot, the Velvet Dog. The summer associates
donated all of their tips to charity. Family, friends and
co-workers attended the event and demonstrated their support by
giving generous tips.
Baker Hostetler and Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP summer associates,
sporting World Cup Soccer gear, teamed up to raise money for
the Domestic Violence Shelter. Overall, over $14,000 was raised for
four different local charities. More important, summer associates
from multiple Cleveland firms had an opportunity to meet one another
and work toward the common goal of helping community
organizations.
The event was just one of many opportunities the summer associates
had to get to know Cleveland, their fellow associates and other
members of the firm. From a cruise on Lake Erie to a Cleveland
Indians game to a performance of “Wicked” at Playhouse Square,
they were not at a loss for activities once the days filled with writing
workshops, team/group meetings and training sessions were over.
