<strong>Commitment</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Diversity</strong><strong>Baker</strong> <strong>Hostetler</strong> has made a long-term commitment <strong>to</strong>incorporate diversity within our workforce and businessstrategies by recruiting, retaining and promoting womenand minority at<strong>to</strong>rneys at all levels.Our progress is demonstrated by our lawyer ranks whichmeet or exceed the national average of women andminority at<strong>to</strong>rney representation among large law firmsas reported by NALP.* As of January 1, 2008, the <strong>Baker</strong><strong>Hostetler</strong> partnership includes 7.6% minority lawyers and20.4% women lawyers, while our associate ranks arecomprised of 17.4% lawyers of color and 44.9% womenlawyers.Our commitment <strong>to</strong> diversity is internal <strong>to</strong> our lawyersand external <strong>to</strong> our clients and our communities. <strong>Diversity</strong> CommitteeIn 1994, the Firm instituted a <strong>Diversity</strong> Task Force,which has since evolved in<strong>to</strong> a standing committee. The<strong>Diversity</strong> Committee includes members of the PolicyCommittee, Office Managing Partners, Partners andAssociates. Exemplifying the goal of true diversity, thecommittee includes minorities, non-minorities, men andwomen, lawyers and staff members.<strong>Diversity</strong> subcommittees focus on four key <strong>to</strong>pics:— Lateral Recruiting— Law School Recruiting— Paul D. White Scholarship and <strong>Diversity</strong> Fellowship— Marketing and RetentionIn addition <strong>to</strong> their regular conference calls <strong>to</strong> discussinitiatives and progress, the <strong>Diversity</strong> Committee hostedMauricio Velásquez, President and CEO of The <strong>Diversity</strong>Training Group, at two Firm events. His presentation,“Cultural Competence,” at the 2008 Partners Retreatfocused on raising awareness of cultural differences<strong>to</strong> ensure respect for all people. In his April 2008presentation <strong>to</strong> the <strong>Diversity</strong> Committee, “<strong>Diversity</strong>Matters: Taking Action,” Mr. Velásquez provided insightin<strong>to</strong> best practices for creating, implementing andmaintaining diversity initiatives and programs as theCommittee reviewed and refined the Firm’s diversitystrategy.In March 2009, the <strong>Diversity</strong> subcommittees spentsignificant time evaluating current initiatives andproposed revised or new action items <strong>to</strong> be undertakenby the Firm in both the short and long-term, as part of thecontinuing effort <strong>to</strong> improve the hiring, development andretention of minority and women at<strong>to</strong>rneys.


RISING<strong>to</strong> meet every challenge.


Women’s CommitteeRecognizing that women face distinctive challengesin the legal profession, in 2004 <strong>Baker</strong> <strong>Hostetler</strong>formed a separate Women’s Committee <strong>to</strong> providerecommendations <strong>to</strong> management <strong>to</strong> meet thesechallenges. Chair of the Committee is Lisa Penning<strong>to</strong>n,Hous<strong>to</strong>n Office Managing Partner.The Committee, which is comprised of at<strong>to</strong>rneysfrom all our offices as well as representation fromHuman Resources and Marketing, is divided in<strong>to</strong> fivesubcommittees:— Hiring/Retention— Social Inclusion— Work/Life Balance— Management/Leadership— MarketingIn addition <strong>to</strong> the firmwide initiatives addressed bythe Women’s Committee, various offices have alsoorganized business development and networking eventsfor women at<strong>to</strong>rneys and clients, as well as hosted orsponsored programs honoring the contributions andachievements of women within the local community,including:— The Denver office hosted its fourth annual Receptionin Honor of Women’s His<strong>to</strong>ry Month in March 2009;— The Cleveland, Hous<strong>to</strong>n and Orlando womenat<strong>to</strong>rneys have hosted networking receptions forclients and friends of the Firm;— Multiple-year Firm sponsorship of the CorporateCounsel Women of Color’s Annual Career StrategiesConference;— Cleveland office sponsorship of <strong>Diversity</strong> Seminarshosted by the Cleveland Bar Association.


RecruitingWe recognize that in order <strong>to</strong> serve the needs of ourdiverse client base, our lawyer population needs <strong>to</strong> beequally diverse. It is because of these differences thatwe can bring a variety of perspectives and experiences<strong>to</strong>gether and provide creative solutions for the challengesour clients face.For each of the last ten years, half of <strong>Baker</strong> <strong>Hostetler</strong>’snew hires were women and minorities. Our ability <strong>to</strong>diversify our workforce is the result of many fac<strong>to</strong>rs,including targeted recruiting of minorities and women atlaw schools and through lateral lawyer interviews, thePaul D. White Scholarship program, active participationin minority job fairs, and the appointment of minority andwomen lawyers <strong>to</strong> our Hiring Committees.Paul D. White Scholarship ProgramA Remarkable ManPaul D. White, <strong>Baker</strong> <strong>Hostetler</strong>’s first minority partner,was a fine lawyer and a remarkable man. Born in 1917,Mr. White overcame obstacles throughout his life througheducation and commitment <strong>to</strong> become a highly regardedlawyer and a widely respected leader.A Pioneer• First African-American judge elected in Cleveland• Direc<strong>to</strong>r of Law, City of Cleveland• Trustee, Cleveland Bar Association and Legal AidSociety• Permanent Delegate <strong>to</strong> The Judicial Conference ofthe Eighth District of Ohio• Member, Ohio, American, National and Norman S.Minor Bar Associations• Distinguished Service Award, NAACP, ClevelandBranchAn InspirationPaul D. White inspired his partners at <strong>Baker</strong> <strong>Hostetler</strong> <strong>to</strong>create an annual scholarship for law students of Black orAfrican American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian orPacific Islander, Asian, American Indian or Alaska Nativedescent. The scholarship, named in his honor, includes apaid summer clerkship and a $7,500 cash award.Although Mr. White passed away in 1997, his legacy liveson. More than $1.5 million in scholarships and clerkshipsfor minority law students has been awarded in his name.Through The Paul D. White Scholarship, he continues<strong>to</strong> inspire young lawyers <strong>to</strong> believe in what they canbecome through education, commitment and leadership.

Training, Retention and DevelopmentAt<strong>to</strong>rneys succeed with training and personal andprofessional development opportunities. At <strong>Baker</strong><strong>Hostetler</strong>, these opportunities begin early in anassociate’s career and continue through a partner’scareer.Associate AcademyEvery first-year associate is invited <strong>to</strong> attend our AssociateAcademy within six months of joining the Firm. Frombusiness development and communication skills <strong>to</strong> duediligence and pre-trial preparation, the Associate Academyprovides targeted training for our first-year at<strong>to</strong>rneys, whilegiving them the opportunity <strong>to</strong> meet and network withpeers from other offices.Mid-Level TrainingDuring their third or fourth year, associates participate ina multi-day program. This advanced training focuses onthe practice group and the industries it serves, <strong>to</strong> furtherdevelop the depth of knowledge and understandingassociates have of the practice area they have chosen.Men<strong>to</strong>ring ProgramThe men<strong>to</strong>ring program matches first-year and lateralassociates with a men<strong>to</strong>r who assists with training anddevelopment. Associates are advised of their progresson a regular basis which ensures they have the feedbackthey need <strong>to</strong> move forward in their careers. Evaluationsare coupled with face-<strong>to</strong>-face discussions regardingprofessional development.4th-Year Coaching ProgramAll associates are assigned a senior-level partner as acoach during their fourth year. The coach acts as a rolemodel for enhancing professional development by passingon knowledge, skills and values and providing adviceand counsel in improving the associate’s legal skills.Additionally, the coach acts as a support person by helping<strong>to</strong> develop social contacts and community involvementduring this year-long program.


Minority At<strong>to</strong>rney ConferenceThis event focuses on business development and lawyerretention. The conference serves <strong>to</strong> facilitate formal andinformal discussions among minority lawyers, <strong>to</strong>p Firmmanagement, clients and outside experts on strategies <strong>to</strong>increase recruitment, retention and promotion of minoritylawyers.At the most recent conference, more than 50 minorityat<strong>to</strong>rneys, representing all of the Firm’s offices, ExecutivePartner Steve Kestner, and other members of Firmmanagement participated in the two-day event. Besidesminority partners from the Firm sharing their experiencesand advice, guest speakers included client representativesfrom The E.W. Scripps Company, FirstEnergy Corp.,and MetLife, Inc., who provided additional insights andperspective.Werten F.W. Bellamy, Jr., founder of the annual “ChartingYour Own Course” career development conference forminority at<strong>to</strong>rneys (of which <strong>Baker</strong> <strong>Hostetler</strong> has been asponsor for seven years), was the keynote speaker.
