Foreword<br />

<strong>Balmain</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> has been caring for the community since 1885 and has a proud history of providing high quality<br />

clinical services for the people of <strong>Sydney</strong>’s inner west. <strong>Balmain</strong> is one of the five hospitals in the <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Local</strong><br />

<strong>Health</strong> District (SLHD).<br />

The vision of the <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Health</strong> District, To Achieve <strong>Health</strong>care Excellence for All, is consistent with the<br />

directions of NSW <strong>Health</strong> as articulated in <strong>Health</strong>y People – Now and in the Future, including:<br />

• To keep people healthy<br />

• To deliver high quality health services<br />

• To provide the health care people need<br />

• To manage health services well<br />

The key purpose of the NSW public sector health system, SLHD and <strong>Balmain</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> is to help people stay<br />

healthy and to provide access to timely, high quality, patient-centred health care. Achieving this requires clear<br />

priorities, supportive leadership and staff working together, underpinned by the core values of collaboration,<br />

openness, respect and empowerment.<br />

This <strong>Balmain</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> <strong>Strategic</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> is based on seven domains which reflect the key concerns of SLHD in<br />

delivering health service excellence. These are:<br />

• Our Patients, Consumers, Carers • Our Staff • Our Community<br />

• Our Services • Our Education • Our Research<br />

• Our Organisation<br />

Importantly, this <strong>Strategic</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> was developed through an open and inclusive staff and community consultation<br />

which was designed to ensure strategies were relevant, robust and consistent with staff concerns and community<br />

needs and issues.<br />
