80-HOUR CERTIFICATE COURSE FOR<br />

SPECIAL NEEDS ASSISTANTS – CICE<br />

GROUP 1<br />

The Church of Ireland College of Educati<strong>on</strong> is offering an outreach Certificate<br />

programme for Special Needs Assistants working in Mainstream Primary and Post-<br />

Primary schools and Special Schools in <strong>Laois</strong> Educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>. This course is being<br />

run in co-operati<strong>on</strong> with the In-Career Development Unit of the Department of<br />

Educati<strong>on</strong> and Science. Course participants will be provided with the opportunity to<br />

gain the necessary knowledge and skills to c<strong>on</strong>tribute effectively to the support of<br />

pupils with special educati<strong>on</strong>al needs. To this end the course c<strong>on</strong>tent has been<br />

approved by the In-Career Development Unit of the Department of Educati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

Science.<br />

Included in the course c<strong>on</strong>tent for the Certificate course are:<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cepts and theories of SEN, holistic care of students with<br />

SEN,<br />

legislati<strong>on</strong> and policies, health and safety, child protecti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

record keeping and c<strong>on</strong>fidentiality,<br />

development of collaborative skills,<br />

students with specific needs, categories of learning disability,<br />

language and communicati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

promoting independence,<br />

understanding and supporting the student with Special<br />

Educati<strong>on</strong>al Needs,<br />

enabling access to the curriculum,<br />

the role of the SNA in relati<strong>on</strong> the transiti<strong>on</strong> from primary to<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d level.<br />
