‘Chamber Day’
planned for Aug. 12
at Morey’s Piers
The Chamber is partnering with
Morey’s Piers in Wildwood for a
family “Chamber Day” that
includes a full day of rides, admission to
water parks and a picnic lunch on
Saturday. Aug. 12.
The price of admission is $34.25 for
those over 48 inches tall and $31.75 for
those under 48 inches. Children under
36 inches are admitted free. The prices
will get you a wristband good for rides
on all three piers (except for miniature
golf and go carts) and entry to both
water parks for the entire day.
The one-hour, all you can eat picnic
lunch begins at noon at Morey’s Water
Park Pavilion. Hamburgers, hot dogs,
soda and ice cream treats are on the bill
of fare.
The deadline for registration is
Wednesday, Aug. 9. Those planning to
attend must be on the registration list so
that wristbands will be ready the day of
the event. To register, or for further
The Greater Vineland Chamber of Commerce is working
hard every day to serve you. Sometimes the perception
of Chambers of Commerce is that of an
organization that talks about the weather and our wonderful
communities, conducts ribbon cutting ceremonies, and
hands out maps. Well, we do these things –– they are
important –– but that is only the “tip of the iceberg.”
As an advocate for our business community, we are
involved in the serious business of representing the economic
health and welfare of our businesses. If they are not
successful and growing, the community cannot be successful.
This commitment and responsibility involves:
• Attention to regulatory and legislative issues.
• Attention to the quality and ambience of the
community.
• Attention to transportation, infrastructure, etc.
• Attention to the educational needs of business.
• Providing networking opportunities.
• Providing money-saving benefits.
• Getting members involved in the issues facing our
community today.
Lack of attention to the health and welfare of the business
community would be detrimental as current economic
conditions steer toward less
than desirable business circumstances.
Local and state
governments, which rely on
business activity for a substantial
portion of the tax base, falter
when business struggles. If
jobs are also at risk, economic
vitality may further erode. The
results impact far beyond our
community.
The Greater Vineland
Chamber of Commerce is the
leading organization in the
Paige Desiere
community with the membership, resources, and expertise
to address the pressing issues. The Chamber is a positive,
upbeat organization that is proud of its community and
businesses and has the ability to recognize and address
those issues that need attention.
Become involved in your local Chamber –– we are the
business community in action.
Business Spotlight of the Month
‘Sweet Impressions’ creates mouth-watering difference at parties
Planning a wedding, bar mitzvah,
anniversary party or other special
occasion? Want to be
known as one who’s up on the
latest trends? Then sweeten that party
with a chocolate fountain, an unusual
attention-getter whose popularity is
slowly making its way up the east coast.
Lou Ann Ferrari-Brooks, co-owner
of “Sweet Impressions LLC” in
Vineland, a business specializing in
fountain rentals, says she is the only
such provider in Southern New Jersey,
except for one in Cherry Hill. She and
her husband Anthony, a Vineland firefighter,
decided to get into the chocolate
fountain business after attending a wedding
of a friend where a fountain
attracted the attention of the guests.
“My husband wanted to start a small
business,” she says, “ and fountains are
becoming very popular.” After some
research into what would be required to
start their own operation, they decided
this was what they had been looking for.
It’s been very successful in the two
years they’ve had it, with most of their
weekends devoted to providing “fountain”
parties for events throughout the
region.
Clients have their choice among
three different sizes of fountains: the
smallest, 19 inches, serves 10 to 40 people;
the medium size, 27 inches, accommodates
40 to 120; and the largest, 34
inches, will serve 120 to 500. In addition
to the fountain, “Sweet Impressions”
also provides premium Belgian
chocolate to create the swirling fondue;
glassware to hold the dipping items,
whether fruit, pretzels, chocolate candy
or cookies; decorations and skewers to
hold the food such as strawberries or
other fruit; and one or two attendants,
professionally dressed, to supervise the
operation of the fountain. Setup and
cleanup is also part of the package.
Her day job
Lou-Ann Brooks, however committed
she is to the fledgling business, is
not about to give up her day job at
United Way of Greater Cumberland
County. There she is dedicated to her
job as “Director of Community Impact
& Initiatives,” which means she works
with community agencies served by
United Way ––18 altogether–– and
determines the best ways to get people
the help they need.
Lou Ann Ferrari-Brooks, owner of “Sweet Impressions,” demonstrates, with a
pretzel, “dipping” into a chocolate fountain, the centerpiece of the business
that caters to people planning any kind of special occasion.
“I feel passionate about the people
who need help,” she says, citing in particular
the local chapter of the American
Red Cross and its humanitarian services,
and Canine Hearing Companions,
an organization that trains dogs to aid
owners with hearing problems. “Some
also are trained to detect when a person
–– or child–– is going to have a
seizure,” she says, thereby enabling the
caregiver to separate the afflicted person
from others, whose reaction might
aggravate the condition.
Brooks has been with United Way
for three years, starting as the administrator
and serving briefly as acting
director when the former director
resigned in November 2005. The new
director, named in April, Ronald Sotak,
relieved her of those responsibilities
and gave her the work she most enjoys.
“Sweet Impressions” is marketed
mainly through the web site,
www.sweetimpressionsllc.com, and
word of mouth, fueled by the couple’s
many family connections.
Both are Vineland natives and both
attended New Jersey colleges: she studied
chemistry at Rowan University and
he was a communications major at Rider
University. It seems their current career
choices are much removed from their
courses of study. But as Lou Ann says,
“You go where your heart takes you.”
What’s new in business?
Eye Associates of Vineland invites
residents to view live cataract surgery
on QBC Channel 2 and
Comcast Channel 78.
QBC Channel 2 and Comcast
Channel 78 have carried footage of the
surgery since July 24. Viewers will hear
from patients who have had the most
modern cataract surgery, before and
after. QBC Channel 2 airs on Mondays
at 9 p.m. and Wednesdays at 6 p.m.
On Comcast Channel 78 you can tune
in on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and Thursdays
at 9pm.
Dr. Sydney L. Tyson of Eye
Associates points out that cataract surgery
today is much different from that
performed years ago when patients
spent time overnight in the hospital.
Today’s methods of cataract surgery are
much more efficient and quick, lasting
only about 10 minutes, and outcomes
are much better.
Bruce Ricards of Wood Street
Partners, Vineland human resources
consulting firm, reports that employees’
dependent children can now keep medical
coverage under their parents’ group
plans until age 30. The previous cutoff
age had been 19 or 23 if enrolled as a
full-time student.
The new law became effective on
May 12 and applies to medical insurance
contracts or plans that are “delivered,
issued, executed or renewed” in
New Jersey after that date. To qualify
for coverage, the adult child must be
under 30 years old, unmarried, with no
dependents and a resident of New
Jersey or enrolled as a full-time student
at an accredited college. Call Ricards at
205-1010 for more information on
group benefit plans and compliance
with the new law.
