luncheon on May 3 at Mori’s on
Landis, with two guest speakers who
addressed labor relations and staffing
dynamics. Diane Knoop of Nipro Glass
Americas spoke about the National
Labor Relations Act Postings &
Regulations, while Laurie LaTorre of the
Cumberland Insurance Group posed the
question “Are your generations working
together or against each other?”

Our chamber year runs from June 1 to
May 31, so I am very excited to present
our Board of Directors for 2012-2013 in
this issue. We welcome three new board
members: Ann Fagotti of Bollinger
Insurance Solutions, Barbara Jones of

Vineland. Our executive committee does

UPDATES:
• A2171 – Healthcare Exchange Act: We opposed this bill as it was written and
Governor Christie vetoed it. If the state does not create its own exchange plan under
the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act by 2014, we will have to abide
by a plan created by the federal government.
• A2162 / S3 – Minimum Wage Increase: Increases the minimum wage to
$8.50/hr with future increases based on the Consumer Price Index. This bill was
passed by the Assembly.

Compass Academy Earth Day Celebration
• More than 125 people attended their celebration held on Saturday, April 21.
Kindergarten first, and second grade children and their families gathered to eat
treats from the Rutgers Food Innovation Center, make crafts at the Cumberland
County 4-H table, plant green beans, and participate in other fun activities. Families
enrolled in the charter school brought guests along. All were able to take a look at a
model kindergarten classroom and learn more about the school’s mission and focus.
Families who live in the Vineland, Millville, and Pittsgrove Township school districts
can come and register their child if they are coming into 1st or 2nd grade in

VMEU Lowers Rates
• City officials are pleased to announce a .6 cents/kWh reduction in the electric
fuel adjustment charge for all Vineland Municipal Electric Utility customers. This
reduction will be included on all electric bills rendered on or after June 1, 2012.
The summer fuel rate beginning June 1, 2012 will be 4.9 cents/kWh. The winter
fuel rate beginning October 1, 2012 will be 4.65 cents/kWh. An average residential
customer using 1,000 kWh per month will see a rate reduction of 4.1% which
equates to $72 in annual savings.
“Since 2008, it has been our goal to re-tool the electric utility and reduce costs to
our customers,” said Mayor Robert Romano. “We have been able to reduce rates
three times over the last four years. The resultant savings represents 14.3% lower
energy costs—an average of almost $250/year for our customers during that time,”
said Mayor Romano.
Joseph Isabella, Director of Vineland Municipal Utilities said, “The rate decrease
reflects savings from the below market solar contracts as well as the overall easing
of wholesale power costs due to low natural gas prices.”
Vineland’s electric rates are currently among the lowest in New Jersey. Vineland
is committed to providing reliable service at the lowest possible cost. Vineland
Municipal Electric Utility currently provides service to 21,698 residential and 3,334
commercial and industrial customers.
Expanded Residency Program
at South Jersey Healthcare
Along with growth comes challenges,
and one of the biggest challenges for the
South Jersey Healthcare's (SJH) growing
residency program is finding sufficient
space for the new doctors to learn and
practice medicine. So, SJH turned to
Stanker & Galetto for a solution.
Now with over 60 residents in place in
SJH, and more planned in the near future,
additional space in the RMC is needed for
these new doctors to practice medicine,
meet with and learn from supervising
physicians, talk with patients’ families,
and for general office space.
“The construction of this new Resident
Center within the Regional Medical
Center is proof that the administration of
SJH is committed to developing a highquality
residency program in South
Jersey,” said Michael Geria, DO, OB/GYN
Residency Program Director for South
Jersey Healthcare.
Stanker & Galetto was selected by SJH
to complete improvements to the RMC by
constructing a new building within a
courtyard that is completely surrounded
by the RMC. The project also includes
renovating seven additional areas
throughout the facility.
The new and renovated space will be
used to accommodate the expansion of
the residency program and should be
completed in mid-2012 with an expected
budget of $1.75 million.
“This project poses some very interesting
challenges,” said Peter Galetto, president
of Stanker & Galetto. “Building a
structure within a confined space that is
surrounded by walls means that we have
to find innovative and affordable ways to
get materials to the site, like pumping
concrete over walls and air-lifting materials
into the courtyard space. It takes an
experienced and creative team of construction
professionals to successfully
complete a job like this.”

family photo with unique features that tell
an interesting story about Vineland or
Vineland residents, you are encouraged to
pick up a registration form at the Vineland
Public Library.

minimum of 8 x 10, matted, framed, and
wire hung. The photo must be captioned
with the story behind the photo relating
to an aspect of Vineland history. Original
or an enlarged/enhanced copy of the original
are accepted. The registration deadline
is July 14, and the ready to hang work

From The Horizon Foundation
Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center has
received a $10,000 grant from The Horizon
Foundation for New Jersey. The grant supports
the Glasstown Collective Education
Program, a group of children’s programs
that serve regional students ages 3 to 18.
The programs of the Glasstown
Collective were developed to address interactive
arts education, basic skills needs and
a lack of out-of-classroom experience in
Vermeil

250 people. They manufacture glass items
used in the scientific and medical industry.

protecting the environment and incorporates

support that effort.

Film Fest Highlights Short Films Made by Women
LUNAFEST, a nationwide film festival of award-winning short films,
by, for and about women will be hosted again this year by Vineland
Gynecology Associates. This year’s films will be screened for one
night only at the SJH Fitness Connection on Thursday, June 7 at 7:30
p.m.
Tickets to the festival are $10 for general admission and $8 for students
and seniors. All of the film festival’s net proceeds go to charity.
To date, LUNAFEST has raised nearly $1.2 million. Fifteen percent of
every dollar raised goes to LUNAFEST’s main beneficiary, the Breast
Cancer Fund, and 85 percent of every dollar raised in Vineland goes
the New Jersey Coalition for Battered Women.
This year, nine films were chosen from thousands of submissions
to be featured at LUNAFEST. “These nine films showcase women filmmakers
and explore issues important to women,” said Dr. Jonathan
Gewirtz.
Each of the featured films is about 15 minutes long, and covers
various women-related topics. This season’s program is filled with stories
of reflection, hope and humor and are a great way of connecting
women in the community through film. On the grim side, there’s former
supermodel Christy Turlington Burns’ documentary exposé Every
Mother Counts: Obstetric Fistula. Other film subjects include a comedy
about women’s body images, a missed opportunity for love, a
women’s rugby team, and Iranian women navigating their culture’s
gender roles.
The film festival is expected to last about two hours. To preview the

A silent auction beginning at 7 p.m. precedes the festival screening.
Proceeds from this auction also benefit the New Jersey Coalition
for Battered Women.
