CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Southern New Jersey’s
Business-to-Business
Newsletter
Serving Cumberland, Salem,
Atlantic, Cape May and Gloucester Counties
Ashow of hands stemming from a question
regarding the Urban Enterprise
Zone and its requirements told a story
of the UEZ’s status in the county.
“How many have found the administrative
regulations more onerous?” Magazzu asked
the group of nearly 200 gathered at
Cumberland County Business Retention
Summit held at Cumberland County College
on March 26.
Nearly every hand raised.
“This is a problem. This is a huge problem,”
Magazzu said. “This is a problem we
need to raise to our legislators.
“I’ve heard over, and over again how difficult
this program is. We’re going to end up
pushing people out of this program.”
The UEZ was just one of the few topics
covered at the summit that featured a town
hall meeting style format.
One businessman on hand to express his
sentiments of the UEZ was Rick Hasenauer
of Gerresheimer Glass, formerly Kimble
Glass in Vineland.
“The tax relief is wonderful but the administration
we have to go through to get it is
outrageous,” said Hasenauer as he stood at
the microphone. “But it is a great benefit.”
Also expressing his feelings on the UEZ
was Vineland Mayor Perry Barse. During his
mic time, and on more than one occasion,
Barse said the UEZ “is dying a slow death.”
“Something has to be done,” Barse added.
“And we need help from the top.”
And adding to the UEZ frustrations was
Serge Brunner of the Espoma Company in
Millville, a leading manufacturer and marketer
of natural and organic based plant foods
for the lawn and garden industry.
“We’re in the midst of evaluating whether
to drop (the UEZ),” Brunner revealed. “The
paperwork for the reimbursement, it may not
be worthwhile.
“It’s not the win-win it once was.”
Sharing their concerns was Denise Jackson,
administrator of the Vineland/Millville UEZ.
Jackson said there are 688 certified UEZ
businesses in Vineland and 249 in Millville.
She also explained that it’s a constant struggle
to retain the status of these businesses as
UEZ qualified because of the different regulations
and the constant change of criteria.
In addition to the UEZ worries, some other
topics discussed during the summit included:
• A possible need for a shuttle bus system
The Chamber will host a
safety training seminar
from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
Tuesday, May 20 at the
Chamber office.
The seminar will be broken
down into three half-hour segments.
Smile: DigiKids Is All About Your Child’s Safety
Picture this. You’re among throngs of
people, shuffling your way through a
crowd with your young son or daughter.
And, despite the best parental efforts your
precious little one disappears.
That feeling of helplessness is no doubt a
tough emotion to deal with.
Who should I contact? Is security nearby?
Those are some of the questions that will run
rampant.
As frightening of a scenario as this might be,
there’s a technology available to at least add
some thought of comfort to a parent’s agonizing
dilemma.
It’s called DigiKids.
The program works by offering mini-digital
identification discs for children, which parents
can carry with them in a pocket or purse.
It’s a relatively new program, just over three
years old, and was developed by creator Mike
Childs in a year and a half time.
How can an ID be obtained? That’s where
Dave Iveson comes into play, the only DigiKids
franchise owner in the South Jersey region.
The Vineland resident, husband to Karen
and father to 7-year-old Ashley, can be contacted
by preschools, schools, companies or community
organizations.
For more than a year Iveson has been traveling
to local institutions, creating IDs for little
ones.
“I bring all of my equipment with me and everything
is done onsite,” said Iveson, who covers the
counties of Cumberland, Atlantic, Cape May and
Gloucester. “I’ve already been to Vineland and
Millville.”
In addition, Iveson said he’s mailed out postcards
to other locations making them aware of the
IDs, which cost $29.95 retail, but only $15 at
schools. Each additional ID is $5.
The way the process works is that Iveson hands
out a form to be completed by parents and
returned by the student. The form includes key
information regarding the child such as physical
characteristics and height and weight statistics.
Overall, Iveson said, the process takes two to
three minutes.
“Usually what takes the longest is getting the
child ready for the picture, because children are
Dave Iveson provides identification CDs for children. Should a child go missing a
parent can located a personal computer, place the disc in the computer and print out
pictures or flyers of the child that includes his or her physical characteristics. Iveson is
the only DigidKids franchise owner in the South Jersey region.
fidgety,” Iveson said with a chuckle.
Iveson, who also mentioned he has an ID card
for his daughter, explained another program
aspect that should relieve the angst of parents.
“Our software can’t create any kind of database,
so when I’m done processing the child, and I go
on to the next child, that information is already
gone,” Iveson explained. “So, if by chance, someone
were to steal my computer there would be
nothing there for them to find about the children.”
According to Iveson the Department of Justice
says 2,200 children are reported missing each day
in the country. He added that the number includes
children wandering off for a brief moment, not
necessarily kidnapped.
However, if a child were to disappear for a
lengthy amount of time the ID card would aid in
finding him or her.
“If you’re with your child at the
mall and the child goes missing you
can go to the nearest (personal computer)
with Windows, pop in that CD
and print out poster and flyers,”
Iveson said, who added that the IDs
don’t work with MACs, but compatability
is in development.
The IDs target newborns to 12
year olds. And, Iveson recommends
updating the photo every six months
for children 6 and under.
“The parent can put the information
on their computer along with a
new picture and update the information,”
Iveson said.
For those interested in the program
Iveson will set up shop on
Thursday, April 17 at the Granny’s
Daycare on Oak Road in Vineland.
“This is a great way of making a
parent feel more safe,” Iveson said.
