Women Tap
Marketing Ideas
Glenn Davila, president of
Performance Marketing of Egg Harbor
Township, brought the message of
Marketing 101 to the Professional
Women’s luncheon held recently at
Cosmopolitan Restaurant. He reminded
the crowd that “marketing is not an
expense, it’s an investment.”
“Electricity, water, marketing—they are
all essential,” Davila said. He also
stressed the need to track sales, so that
you know what strategies are working
and which are not. A simple, welldesigned
messsage, consistent from one
medium to another, is also key.
Facebook was discussed as a word-ofmouth
vehicle as well as a powerful tool
in search engine optimization, but like
anything else on the Web, depends on
freshness of content.
Two local businesses shared their successes.
ServPro was represented by
Barbara Jones, and Lilliston Ford by
Stacey Lilliston, who uses YouTube and
direct mail. Lilliston has a computerized
tracking system that recently indicated
they sold 40 cars in three days from a
direct mailer.
The next GVCC Women’s Professional
luncheon will be held on Tuesday, May
24, with Vineland Gynecology Associates
representatives speaking on menopause.
Thursday, March 17, the day of the
GVCC’s most recent luncheon, was
a day to celebrate green. With it
being St. Patrick’s Day and the
official start of spring just three days away, it
was fitting that Director of the New Jersey
Nature Conservancy Barbara Brummer,
PhD., should address an overflow crowd at
Hampton Inn & Suites on the topic of “Value
of Natural Capital—How Business and Good
Conservation Succeed Together.”
We “consume” nature’s benefits through
a growing world population that “puts a lot
of pressure on our natural resources,” Dr.
Brummer said. “An expanding middle class
is where we get this increase in consumption.”
These two factors, growing population
and expanding middle class, she
noted, causes the human footprint to grow
in several categories.
Most notable of these is the carbon footprint,
and although it accounts for 60 percent
of the total, there are ways to replenish it and
guard against over-consumption. The other
categories are grazing (amount of land needed
to feed a growing population), forest, fishing,
cropland, and “built-up” land.
Brummer emphasized the value of natural
resources, or eco-goods, and talked
about ways to assign a dollar value to offbalance
assets. In New Jersey, specifically,
farm products account for more than 60
percent of the valuable natural assets, fisheries
more than 16 percent, and minerals
around 10 percent.
As an example of values, Brummer noted
that the closer your home is to a park or open
space, the higher the value of your home. If
the park is blighted and not kept to its highest
and best use, however, it will detract from the
value of surrounding properties. Brummer
referenced 13 Pinelands towns where the tax
increase was 42 percent lower than towns not
located within the Pinelands.
Still speaking about assigning values, she
asked: “How do you assign a value to natural
substances that are 80 percent of all
cancer drugs?” Or the Nature
Conservancy’s 30 water funds in South
America that protect forested headwaters.
Brummer lauded a partnership with Dow
Chemical, a business that has agreed to
tally up the ecosystem costs and benefits of
every business decision and has invested
$410 million toward that end.
Locally, Brummer pointed to erosioncontrol
projects in southern New Jersey, as
well as the Conservancy’s Manumuskin
River and Gandy’s Beach land purchases.
The Delaware River, the longest undammed
river in the eastern United States, provides
drinking water and quality habitat to about
15 million people, she said..
Marketing addressed the GVCC women
about marketing a business.
Business and Conservation Meet
Business owners learn how to work hand-in-hand with nature to protect natural assets needed to
survive as entrepreneurs...and as people on the planet. By Deborah A. Ein
about the value of natural capital.
“Rarely are these situations a one-state
deal; nature doesn’t work that way,”
Brummer concluded, referring to our manmade
boundaries.
The GVCC thanks the sponsors of its
Bill Wahl Supply Offers Green Guidelines
Bill Wahl Supply is committed to green building products and principles as well
as energy conservation and efficiency. They can help you create your own energy
audit. Sometimes saving money on your energy bill is as easy as making minor
alterations or repairs. A great way to start is a visual inspection of the property:—
home or business. Do you notice seams, cracks or holes that allow air to travel
through them? Do you sometimes feel a draft in the middle of a specific room?
These are examples of air loss or gain which add to the size of your utility bill at
the end of the month. A quick remedy can sometimes be simple and inexpensive.
Bill Wahl Supply offers a wide variety of products geared and developed for the
specific purpose of building energy efficiency.
You may want to investigate the possibilities of solar electricity and creating
your own energy generating system. The current financial benefits of a solar electric
generating system are significant. Financial incentives offered at the state and
federal levels are abundant. However, a high performance solar system carries with
it a few crucial variables to determine not only the possible operating efficiency but
viability as well. If you would like to find
out how a solar system works or whether
or not it would be appropriate for you,
you may call Bill Wahl Supply, a fullservice
solar integrator for both commercial
and residential. They have the personnel
available to help you!
A few of their “green” products are:
• Solar reflective asphalt roofing shingles
• Insulated siding with an R-Value of 5
(5 times the energy efficiency of ordinary
siding)
• Energy Star rated windows and doors
– wide variety.
Joe Bruckner represented Bill Wahl Supply
Inc. with a booth at the last GVCC luncheon.
cardholders (must present card at gate) this
month through December. (Offer does not
