Meet and greet
Sister Carmel Marie (Sallows)
Sister Carmel Marie (Sallows)
Since entering the congregation in 1953 from South Bend,
Indiana, Sister Carmel Marie (Sallows) has spent her life having fun.
She taught kindergarten through second grade and then retired to
minister at Saint Joseph High School in South Bend.
“If you can do kindergarten, you can do teenagers,” she said. “They
are just a little taller.”
These days Sister Carmel Marie has many volunteer jobs. On
Tuesdays she brings Communion to individuals living at the
Sanctuary at Holy Cross, a Trinity Health senior living community
in South Bend. On Wednesdays she prepares mailings for the Center
for Hospice. During the week she makes bereavement phone calls to
families who have lost loved ones. When classes are in session she
works in the Saint Joseph High School library. She also volunteers
in the Copy and Mail Center at Saint Mary’s on an on-call basis and
serves as a companion to sisters going to doctors’ appointments.
Recently, Sister Carmel Marie received a 15-year service award
pin from the Center for Hospice for her work at Camp Evergreen, an
annual grief camp for youth and teens. Sister Carmel Marie and Sister
Mary Pius (Schriener) help with registration, grief sessions and art
projects. They also share meals and chat with the children at camp.¡
LifeSigns is published six times a year for the Sisters of the Holy Cross around the
