Message from the Volunteer Auxiliary Board President 

Greetings to all, 

I am truly proud and humbled to have served as president of the Volunteer Auxiliary. 

We had another great year! 

We currently have 1,169 amazing volunteers who served more than 106,700 hours 

of their time in fiscal year 2011. Throughout this time volunteers helped with some 

exciting projects related to the new 360,000-square-foot expansion at St. Cloud Hospital. 

Volunteers lent a hand with projects such as deliver items during the tube system 

downtime, help with the open houses and assist patients and their families during 

the move (see page 12 for more details).

Our mission is to provide service, public relations and fundraising to help CentraCare 

Health System be the leader in Minnesota for quality, safety, service and value. Many times, 

volunteers are the first encounter for a patient, family member, visitor or guest. In April, frontline volunteers 

including Ambassadors, River Campus and Admissions merged to create the new STEP (Speedy Transport 

Escort Pool) Force position. STEP Force volunteers assist with escorting or transporting patients and visitors 

throughout the St. Cloud Hospital campus, accompany discharged patients to lobbies and run errands for staff. 

Other new positions include Dialysis at CentraCare Health Plaza, Art Therapy and CentraCare Clinic volunteers. 

The Volunteer Auxiliary board distributes funds earned from the Gift Galleries, baby pictures, art sales and 

various fundraisers (such as jewelry sales) to requesting departments that have a project or item that otherwise 

may not be funded. This year the Volunteer Auxiliary was able to fund almost all requests and became the 

second largest benefactor of the Gorecki Guest House with a total contribution of $500,000 (see page 19). 

We have a fantastic Auxiliary board made up of volunteers just like you. If you are interested in becoming 

more involved with the Volunteer Auxiliary, feel free to talk with me, an Auxiliary board member, Janene 

or Megan in the Volunteer Office. 

Our successes as a Volunteer Auxiliary would not be possible without our talented and efficient Volunteer 

Office staff and the support of our Administration. Special thanks to all of you for helping us be a standout 

volunteer program in the region. 

I have had a wonderful time as Volunteer Auxiliary president. You all have made it possible. Thank you 

so much for your dedicated service.

Awards 

J.P. Martin has been volunteering 

for 17 years and contributed more than 

8,500 hours to develop and continue 

the Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) 

Program at St. Cloud Hospital. 

J.P. Martin, an Animal-Assisted Therapy 

evaluator from Royalton, helped start the 

program in 1996 with beloved Kat, an English 

Springer Spaniel, who died in September 2007. 

The first visit occurred when J.P., known 

for his bond with Kat, was asked to visit 

a critically ill child. When the child didn’t survive, J.P. promised to “continue to do 

all I can, to make what life there is, worthwhile.” J.P. continues to train new volunteers 

for the program and conduct patient visits with Springer Spaniels, Secret and Rice. 

J.P. Martin is a phenomenal volunteer! He always is willing to help and is devoted 

to training new volunteers. Patients love to see the AAT dogs — they truly brighten 

everyone’s day. 

Maggie McLaird has volunteered more than 1,000 hours at St. Cloud Hospital since 2008. She served in the 

Gift Gallery, as a Junior Volunteer Team Lead and as Vice-President from 2011 to 2012. She helps with many special projects 

and goes above and beyond expectations. Maggie is professional, caring and has a wonderfully positive and contagious 

attitude. Maggie is a recent graduate of Sauk Rapids-Rice High School 

and plans to attend Winona State University to pursue a career in nursing 

and will continue to volunteer in the College Volunteer Program.

Anna is a homeschool student 

entering her junior year. She 

became a Junior Volunteer Team 

Lead in June 2011 and helps train

volunteering, she does her best and encourages those around her 

to put forth their best effort. She is quick to ask if there is more 

she could do or if help is needed with anything else. She is a great 

role model, fantastic leader and an excellent representative of the

Einas Alkhatib Winner of the Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration 

Award for Excellence in Volunteerism, Outstanding Young Adult Volunteer as well as the 

Junior Jefferson Award for Public Service through KSAX/KRWF-TV 

Einas Alkhatib 

Einas has contributed more than 760 hours as a Patient and Family Care Volunteer. Einas began as 

a Junior Volunteer and now is a College Volunteer. She requested the Tomorrow’s Leaders of America grant to complete 

projects through the Junior Volunteer Program to improve the patient experience. Einas is attending St. Cloud State University 

and plans to pursue a career as a pediatrician.

Craig Broman, St. Cloud Hospital president 

Winner of the Health Care Auxiliary of Minnesota – Senior Leadership Award 

Craig recognizes that it would be impossible to deliver the quality and quantity of services 

for which this hospital is noted without the daily assistance of volunteers. Craig continues to 

extend his personal thanks to volunteers and takes every opportunity he has to learn about them, 

their volunteer experience and how long they have served as a volunteer. Craig understands that 

volunteers provide services because they believe in and are dedicated to St. Cloud Hospital. 

Stephanie Eswine Winner of the Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration 

Award for Excellence in Volunteerism, Outstanding High School Volunteer as well as the 

Junior Jefferson Award for Public Service through KSAX/KRWF-TV 

Stephanie began volunteering at St. Cloud Hospital in May 2009 and has served more than 390 hours. 

She is a Junior Volunteer Team Lead and helps train new Junior Volunteers. Stephanie served as 

the president of the Junior Volunteer Program in 2010. Stephanie graduated from Rocori High School 

in May 2012 and is attending the University of St. Thomas with plans to pursue a career as physician. 


Patrick Heller, MD, CentraCare Health System – Melrose, Family Medicine 

Winner of the Minnesota Physician Publishing – 2012 Community Caregiver Award 

Patrick volunteers several hours each month with Project H.E.A.L. (Health, Education, Access, 

Link) at St. Mary’s Church in Melrose. Project H.E.A.L. offers free monthly health screenings 

and basic care in Melrose and several other locations in Central Minnesota for those who have 

little or no insurance. Patrick was instrumental in opening the Melrose site. 

Gerry Keymer Winner of the Health Care Auxiliary of Minnesota – Volunteer of the 

Year Award 

Gerry volunteers as tour guide, STEP (Speedy Transport and Escort Pool) Force Volunteer 

and trainer to new volunteers. He has served more than 5,680 hours since 2006. Gerry has been 

instrumental in many hospital projects, including advocating for 30 new wheelchairs for hospital 

entrances. When Gerry trains new volunteers, he instills in them the commitment to detail that 

will make St. Cloud Hospital better and provide the best care to our patients and visitors.

Highlights 


Volunteers lend a hand 

during expansion open houses 

The community was welcomed in May to see the 

completed St. Cloud Hospital expansion project that 

began in the spring of 2008. Hundreds of volunteers 

served more than 900 hours in various roles during the 

open houses, including: 

• Welcoming guests; 

• Assisting guests with way finding; 

• Leading and assisting with tours; 

• Monitoring employee and guest safety; and 

• Lending extra hands in the reception area. 

The new 360,000-square-foot addition 

became home to: 

• Expanded Neuroscience, Cardiac 

Care, Surgical and Medical 

patient rooms; 

• New Family Birthing Center, 

Cardiovascular Thoracic Unit 

and Intensive Care Unit; and 

• 10 state-of-the-art operating rooms. 

“I was overwhelmed by the new technology as well as the 

thought and care that went into planning every phase of the 

new addition. Having been a nursing student in the 1950s, 

the advances are mind-boggling. I was very proud to show off 

what St. Cloud Hospital has done for the community. Shortly 

after the move, I was grateful to see my granddaughter after 

she gave birth to my third great-grandchild in the new 

Family Birthing Center.”

Volunteers ease transition 

through personalized attention 

Several units moved into their new space throughout 

June and July, requiring extensive planning and 

coordination between many departments. During the 

unit moves, volunteers were a significant part of the move 

team. Volunteers walked with the patient’s family members and 

guests while they were transported into their new room as well as assisted staff 

and guests with way finding. Patients received a homemade card, flower or other 

recognition for their patience during the move delivered by volunteers. 

Volunteers bridge gap during tube system downtime 

St. Cloud Hospital’s pneumatic tube system used for distributing items throughout the hospital 

was out of service March 6 and 7 because of construction. To ensure that needed items reached 

their destination, more than 43 volunteers served 700 hours to deliver necessary items during 

this downtime. Volunteers also routinely rounded on patient care units and delivered items 

to other areas including Lab, Pharmacy and Distribution.

The Gift Gallery is staffed by welcoming and gracious 

volunteers and offers gifts for all occasions including flowers, 

plants, greeting cards, jewelry, stuffed animals, balloons, seasonal 

items and much more.

For example, the Dignity Closet provides 

clothing for patients who enter the 

hospital under difficult circumstances 

or whose clothing was destroyed when 

they were admitted to the hospital.

In 2011, the Volunteer Auxiliary 

donated $1,200 toward the 

Dignity Closet and used surplus 

funds to establish a Dignity Closet 

for pediatric patients. 

It is not only an investment in clothing, 

but an investment in meeting the needs 

of patients at a very desperate time 

in their lives. More than 300 items 

from the Dignity Closet were given 

to patients this past year. 

A volunteer stocks clothing 

in the Dignity Closet. 

Employees provide patients with clothing items, 

if needed, before they are discharged.


The Volunteer Auxiliary graciously gave $8,200 to: 

• Animal-Assisted Therapy – The use of a trained therapy 

animal in collaboration with a health care professional can enhance 

the mental and emotional well-being, physical rehabilitation and medical 

recuperation of a patient. Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is performed 

under the direction of a health care provider. AAT dogs and certified handlers 

are St. Cloud Hospital volunteers who have completed extensive training. 

The Volunteer Auxiliary funded the development of a new brochure to promote the program and provide 

education on the benefits of this service. 


The Volunteer Auxiliary generously awarded $5,000 to: 

• Domestic Violence Safety – Domestic violence is a highly prevalent 

public health problem with devastating effects on individuals, families 

and communities. St. Cloud Hospital is committed to provide 

support, safety and resource information for people experiencing 

domestic violence.

The Volunteer Auxiliary funded the printing of personal safety cards 

and posters for public display and the development of a brochure about 

resources available at St. Cloud Hospital. 

• Home Care Services Collaboration – CentraCare Health System 

memory and dementia care services provide evaluations, screenings, 

treatment, interventions for all levels of memory loss and dementia, including 

Alzheimer’s disease. Patients identified as candidates for memory screenings are referred 

to CentraCare Memory Care Service Partners. Each patient is evaluated for the level of care 

that will best allow them to maintain their safety and independence. 

The Volunteer Auxiliary funded two standardized test kits and the development of two different brochures — 

one for referring health care providers and one for the patient and family. 

• Inpatient Rehabilitation – Allows patients to lead a more independent 

life following an illness or injury. Conditions often treated include stroke, 

traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological impairments 

such as multiple sclerosis, multiple traumas, amputations, orthopedic 

conditions, as well as many others. 

The Volunteer Auxiliary funded two iPad 2’s, iPad applications and accessories 

to be used during patient therapy sessions.

The Volunteer Auxiliary compassionately provided $2,500 for: 

• Gift of Hope Grief Boxes – Dealing with a death is difficult, 

even when it is expected. To help family members cope with the death of a loved one 

at St. Cloud Hospital, a Gift of Hope Grief Box is presented to the family. Each box 

includes a bookmark, an inspirational poem, the booklet “My Friend, I Care,” 

a journal and pen, a sympathy letter written in six different languages given on 

behalf of St. Cloud Hospital and a sympathy card that is signed by all of the staff 

who cared for the patient. The card provides closure for the family as well as the 

staff who became close to the patient and family. Volunteers help assemble the boxes. 

The Volunteer Auxiliary funded supplies for boxes that were given to 660 families who had 

lost a loved one. 

“We are overjoyed to know that because of the dollars donated toward the Gift of Hope 

Grief Box project, we can continue to show patients and families that we deeply care 

for them.” - The Grief Committee 


The Volunteer Auxiliary gave a $500 tribute to: 

• We Honor Veterans Program – Each year, 

more than 25 percent of those who die in 

the United States are veterans. To help 

provide care and support that reflects the 

important contributions made by these men 

and women, St. Cloud Hospital Hospice 

Services has become a national partner of 

We Honor Veterans, a pioneering campaign developed by the 

National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration 

with the Department of Veterans Affairs. 

The Volunteer Auxiliary provided funding to purchase items to enhance 

the veteran gratitude ceremony, including paper for certificates, 

certificate frames, flag pins and refreshments. 

One of the first ceremonies was for two patients living in a local hospice house. 

Family members were invited to a special ceremony on Memorial Day. A member 

of the hospice volunteer team, who was a veteran himself, presented both men with 

a framed certificate of appreciation and thanked them for their service. There were 

tears, smiles, pictures and, of course, cake. One of the veterans being recognized 

leaned over to the other with tears in his eyes and said, “No one has ever thanked 

me before.” He passed away two days later.


The Volunteer Auxiliary generously awarded $200,000 to be paid over the next 5 years to: 

• Gorecki Guest House, endowment – St. Cloud Hospital Gorecki Guest House 

welcomes patients and family members of patients who are receiving medical care 

in the St. Cloud community. The house offers a comfortable, homelike atmosphere 

that allows families the opportunity to stay close to their loved ones. 

This beautiful home is maintained by a caring group of St. Cloud Hospital 

volunteers and staff who are available to assist guests with their 

hospitality needs. 

From July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012, 

the Gorecki Guest House welcomed 

1,926 guests from 65 Minnesota counties 

and 28 states. All 12 guest rooms 

were occupied 115 nights and overall 

occupancy was 80 percent. Guest 

satisfaction scores exceeded 97 percent.

The Auxiliary provided funding for the Gorecki Guest House endowment 

through the CentraCare Health Foundation. The endowment provides 

ongoing funding to reduce operating costs as well as a free or reduced stay 

to those with financial need.
