Volunteer Auxiliary Annual Report
Volunteer Yearbook 2011
Message from the Volunteer Auxiliary President
Greetings to all,
This was another outstanding year for the St. Cloud Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary!
I am truly proud and humbled to be the current president.
Leadership only fares well when you have a good team to back you up and carry
out the mission. We currently have 1,247 amazing volunteers working throughout
St. Cloud Hospital and CentraCare Health System. Many times, volunteers are
the first impression for a patient, family member or guest. Our mission is to
provide service to help CentraCare Health System be the leader in Minnesota
for quality, safety, service and value.
Kendra Flanagan
We have a fantastic, informed and creative Volunteer Auxiliary Board made up of
volunteers just like you who have stepped up their commitment and shared their skills
and passion for the Volunteer Program. During the year, the board created a distribution of funds
policy, emergency succession plan and redesigned job descriptions for individuals and committees. If you
feel you might like to be on the board — don’t wait for someone to ask you. Talk with an Auxiliary board
member or with Janene or Megan in the Volunteer Office.
The Volunteer Auxiliary Board distributes funds earned from the Gift Galleries, baby pictures, art sales
and various fundraisers (such as jewelry sales) to departments that have a special request for funding
a project or item. The board has a very defined and detailed protocol for distributing funds.
In the past year, we have added volunteers in the following areas: Laboratory Services at CentraCare Health
Plaza, CentraCare Clinic – Heartland, Patient Care Support and Education & Professional Development.
The St. Cloud Hospital construction project has presented the opportunity to reorganize and anticipate
how many additional volunteers may be needed to cover the expansion. We look forward to next year
and the projects volunteers can help with in the new addition.
I have had a great time this past year and look forward to the challenges and opportunities for service
at St. Cloud Hospital and CentraCare Health System. It would not be possible without all of you.
Thank you all so much for your dedicated service.
Blessings to all,
Kendra Flanagan
Sandi Schulzetenburg has been
volunteering at the St. Cloud Hospital
Breast Center for 19 years and has
served more than 3,100 hours.
Sandi has touched thousands of lives
through her volunteer work at the
Breast Center and through the
Enhancement Program where she fits
wigs for women going through cancer
treatment. Sandi also works with vendors
and the community to obtain products such
as cosmetics and turbans to enhance the lives
of cancer patients.
Some comments received from Sandi’s nomination include:
“Sandi has been an incredible asset to the Enhancement Program for
cancer patients. She makes them come to life after their experience
with hair loss. She fits them with a wig and hat in the most caring
and compassionate manner. She is sensitive to their needs and always
knows exactly what to say to help them through their journey.”
“She also has been a fantastic facilitator for the Look Good...Feel Better
Program. The program is the best in the state because of her commitment
to making patients feel better. We are extremely fortunate to have
Sandi as a volunteer!”
St. Benedict’s Senior Community Gift Shop
St. Cloud Hospital Gift Gallery began collaboration
with the St. Benedict’s Senior Community Gift Shop
in November 2010. Shop management and purchasing
efforts are overseen by the St. Cloud Hospital Gift
Gallery to provide consistent shop operations and
reduce expenses. All proceeds benefit St. Benedict’s
Senior Community resident programs.
St. Benedict’s Senior Community has more than 450 volunteers. Volunteers serve
the entire campus in many different capacities. Volunteering at St. Benedict’s Senior
Community involves a
variety of tasks including:
visit with patients or residents,
provide music and other
entertainment, assist staff with
activities, take residents on
field trips, escort residents to
medical appointments and play
cards and games.
New wheelchairs at St. Cloud Hospital
Thanks to Gerry Keymer, ambassador volunteer, new wheelchairs were purchased to
transport patients within St. Cloud Hospital. Gerry noticed that mismatched wheelchairs
and those with missing parts were often the only ones available to patients and visitors at
Entrances A and E, the busiest entrances of the hospital.
Through Gerry’s initiative, St. Cloud Hospital invested in 30 new wheelchairs. The new
chairs have the St. Cloud Hospital logo imprinted on the back along with return information.
Existing black wheelchairs in good condition remain
in service for use by various departments. Volunteer
Services would like to recognize Craig Broman,
St. Cloud Hospital president, for his support
of this project.

Candy Striper Program turns 50
The Candy Striper Program was started June 13, 1961,
by Rosalie Timmers, RN, a 1931 graduate of the St. Cloud
Hospital School of Nursing and a public health nurse. The
goal was to educate and introduce volunteers to careers in
health care, instill future senior volunteers with a sense of
civic responsibility and build ambassadors to the community.
In the mid-70s, when boys began to join the program,
the name Candy Striper was changed to Junior Volunteer.
The original uniforms
were red- and white-striped
1962, Kathy Gerber being capped
after 50 hours of volunteering.
1980, group of Junior Volunteer Officers.
Rosalie Timmers, founder of
the Candy Striper program.
pinafores with white blouses, white knee highs and white
leather shoes. After completing a certain number of volunteer
hours, a “capping ceremony” was performed. Volunteers were
always very proud to receive their caps.
Junior Volunteers, ages 14-18, generously
give their time and talent to provide valuable
support to hospital programs, staff and
patients. Currently, the hospital has more
than 140 junior volunteers working in
various departments. More than 4,250 Junior
Volunteers have been active with the Candy
Striper program since it began.
Riverfront Dining celebrated the
50th Anniversary of the Junior
Volunteer Program. This event included:
historical displays from the
Junior Volunteer Program,
guided tours of St. Cloud
Hospital, cake and punch.
Community Health
Projects funded:
• Women’s Health 101
Amount awarded: $2,000
Women’s Health 101 is a day-long educational
forum that provides women with a broad range
of health information from health care specialists
at no cost. Studies show that women make
75 percent of all health care decisions for
their families. As key decision makers, women
need timely, accurate medical information.
In Central Minnesota, women ages 40-65 are
the fastest growing population segment. CentraCare
Health System is committed to meeting the unique health care needs of women of all ages.
Annual event attendance averages around 500 women with the majority of
these attendees being women older than 45. Participants can choose from
approximately 20 different health topics presented in 45-minute sessions.
Participants also can visit more than 40 health-related booths at this
free event.
On April 2, 2011,
CentraCare Health
System presented the
10th annual Women’s
Health 101 at CentraCare Health Plaza. More than 450 people participated
in free presentations and screenings, visited with staff at educational booths
and consulted with pharmacists on medications. Free glucose and cholesterol
screenings were completed for 187 people. The keynote speaker, Tracy Knofla,
presented “Thriving in Chaos.” Approximately 95 percent of women who
attended Women’s Health 101 made changes to improve their health.
In 2009, the Women’s Health 101 planning committee began partnering
with representatives from diverse communities to reach out to non-English
speaking women. Approximately 30 non-English speaking women
attended in 2011 and were able to receive this health education thanks
to volunteer interpreters.
Gorecki Guest House
Projects funded:
• Gorecki Guest House – construction.
Amount awarded: $300,000 — the Auxiliary contributed
the second largest donation for the project.
June 10, 2011 marked the second anniversary of the Gorecki
Guest House. The Guest House provides affordable, temporary
housing in a peaceful, homelike setting for families and
patients receiving medical care in the St. Cloud community.
Having the Guest House just footsteps away from St. Cloud
Hospital helps decrease patient/family stress, travel, lodging
costs and drive time. Patients often recover quicker when
their families are nearby and available for support.
From July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011, the Gorecki Guest House
welcomed 1,900 guests from 65 Minnesota counties and
35 states. All 12 guest rooms were filled 136 nights and
overall occupancy was 82 percent. Guest satisfaction scores exceeded
97 percent. The Gorecki Guest House provided $4,145 in charity care for
families needing financial assistance. The St. Cloud Hospital Auxiliary donated
the funds to purchase a wall-mounted flat-screen TV for a kitchen.
“My stay at the Gorecki Guest House was wonderful. The convenience to the
hospital, comfortable and clean accommodations and the supportive staff offset the
uncertainty and challenges of my husband’s accident and hospital rehabilitation
stay. My thanks and gratitude! Prayers that God will continue to bless this special
guest house.” - Patrice, Motley
CentraCare Health System – Melrose Volunteer Services
Projects funded:
• Volunteer Computer Work Station
Amount awarded: $1,525
Featured Projects 2011
CentraCare Health System – Melrose offers a variety of volunteer
opportunities for men and women ages 16 and older to make a tremendous
difference in the lives of patients,
residents, tenants and their families.
Volunteers greatly enhance the health
care experience by providing friendship in a rural community
atmosphere. A computer station was requested to print menu choices
for Pine Villa residents and Park View tenants, in addition to making
picture menus for non-English speaking patients. The computer also is
used for volunteers to print their own signs and schedules, creating a
sense of pride and ownership within the Volunteer Services program.
