WHAT IS ETHERNET/IP?
EtherNet/IP is the name given to the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP), as
implemented over standard Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) and the TCP/IP protocol suite.
CIP is the application protocol that is common to CompoNet, ControlNet,
DeviceNet and EtherNet/IP (Figure 1). The EtherNet/IP and CIP technologies are
managed by the ODVA (in conjunction with ControlNet International).
ODVA publishes the EtherNet/IP Specifications and ensures compliance
through conformance and interoperability testing.
Figure 1
DeviceNet, CompoNet & ControlNet share the same CIP
application and transport layers with EtherNet/IP
4 | WHAT IS ETHERNET/IP?
The ‘IP’ in ‘EtherNet/IP’ refers to ‘Industrial Protocol’.
EtherNet/IP utilises CIP over standard IEEE 802.3 and the
TCP/IP protocol suite. EtherNet/IP uses standard Ethernet
and TCP/IP technologies, allowing compatibility and
coexistence with other applications and protocols.
Available Q4 2007
UNIGATE IC is a complete Single-Chip Ethernet-solution in a 32-DIL-housing. On a
space of 45 x 25 mm only the unit contains all required components, such as
microcontroller, Flash, RAM, Ethernet-chip and of course the analogue components, e.g.
optocoupler and bus driver. The UNIGATE IC is to be connected to the microprocessor of
the terminal unit or it can be operated stand-alone. The integrated microprocessor handles
the complete data traffic with the Fieldbus and with it relieves the processor of the terminal
unit of this considerable effort. The terminal unit’s protocol is converted in the UNIGATE
IC via a script. This script is generated with the free PC-tool Protocol Developer and it is
optimally adjusted to the final product and the requirements of the Fieldbus-Master.
Changes in the firmware of the terminal device are not necessary and the terminal device’s
microprocessor is not additionally stressed with communication and Fieldbus-tasks. The
hard- and software-interfaces of the Deutschmann UNIGATE IC-series are standardised
and functionally the same. Consequently the interchangeability of the different versions of
the UNIGATE IC-types is guaranteed without changing the device’s electronic system.
The Deutschmann Gateway UNIGATE IC uses a data capacity of 1024 bytes.
It operates with 10 Mbit/s. TCP/IP and UDP/IP protocols are supported.
Processor-connection
For the use in systems with own microprocessor, the UNIGATE IC-Fast Ethernet is
connected to the processor of the terminal equipment via an UART-interface. The
UNIGATE IC takes on the complete communication part, including the Ethernet-side and
consequently relieves the processor of the terminal unit of this considerable effort. The
communication between the device’s processor and the UNIGATE IC is controlled by the
Script. Due to the Script technology complex protocols can be replicated, data can be
processed and buffered between, calculated and so on. And the terminal equipment’s
firmware is not touched!
Stand-alone operation
The connection to terminal equipment without processor can be carried out via the clocked
shift register. A maximum of 256 signals for input and output each can be processed; the
UNIGATE IC’s firmware is responsible for the different number of input and output
signals and takes over control for it.
available. The memory required for the data exchange is already on the EtherNet/IP
Adapter module, so that the interface of the application CPU only has to be connected
to the module.
For simple applications it is possible to run the application together with the EtherNet/IP
Adapter software on the module. Device vendors can also integrate the hardware design
instead of the add-on module directly in their own circuit.

Available from: www.odva.org
Conformance Testing
EtherNet/IP Conformance Testing is mandatory according to the ODVA Terms of Usage
Agreement. Vendors are required to maintain conformance and correct any
non-conformances should they occur. Testing is undertaken at an ODVA authorised Test
Service Provider; centres are located in Europe, US and Asia. Once the Protocol
Conformance Test is passed at the TSP, ODVA issues a Declaration of Conformity and
publishes it on www.odva.org.
Interoperability testing
The EtherNet/IP Implementor Workshop has defined a set of interoperability
recommendations to help ensure interoperability among devices. These recommendations
are tested at ODVA-sponsored events called ‘Plug Fests’ that occur approximately twice a
year in North America and Europe. The interoperability tests are optional, but have proven
to be highly valuable in creating interoperable products that work in real user applications.
See www.odva.org for information on the Implementor Workshop series and Plug Fest
schedule. The tool used during interoperability testing is the EtherNet/IP Device
Interoperability Test Tool (EDITT), described above.
Note: Products must obtain a Declaration of Conformity before being allowed to
participate in these events.
EtherNet/IP Modbus/TCP Board Level Gateway
Any device with a serial port can now have Ethernet/IP and Modbus/TCP communications
in weeks not months. With a High Speed TTL Serial Interface (230 Kbps), extremely Small
Footprint and High Performance 10/100 Mbit Network interface, the 6102 Ethernet Board
Level Gateway is an option for quickly adding EtherNet/IP and Modbus/TCP
communications to your standard product line. Based on a very powerful 55 Mhz
ARM7TDMI RISC core the 6102 is the simplest, most powerful and cost effective solution
for Ethernet networking.
510E Embedded Module with EtherNet/IP
Adding EtherNet/IP Embedded Gateway to your product requires a UART, 500mA at
3.3V and 2" x 2.6" of space.
The gateway is simply a Modbus RTU Slave to the processor on your host hardware. The
concept is very simple. You read and write registers in the gateway at your pleasure. When
you have new I/O or other data ready, write the gateway. When you need data from the
EtherNet/IP network, read the gateway. No additional communications are required.
UNIGATE CL EtherNet/IP
The Deutschmann UNIGATE Gateway connects devices, such as automation components
and EtherNet/IP networks via serial interface. The protocol of the Terminal-unit is
converted in the UNIGATE via a script. This script is generated with the free PC tool
‘Protocol Developer’ and it is optimally adapted to the end product and the requirements of
the EtherNet/IP. Changes in the firmware of the terminal-unit are unnecessary.
Application
Deutschmann UNIGATE EtherNet/IP is ideal for the use with terminal-units that do not have
their own EtherNet/IP-interface. The standard DIN-rail version features IP24 protection.
Features
The Deutschmann UNIGATE Gateway uses the complete data capacity of EtherNet/IP: 500
byte and supports all speeds. The complete performance range of EtherNet/IP is supported by
UNIGATE. For the EtherNet/IP-connection a RJ45 connector is provided, the connection of
the serial side is made through screw-plug-connector. The EtherNet/IP – IP address can either
be set through the EtherNet/IP itself or the script. A large number of diagnostic LEDs signal
the state of the device, both for EtherNet/IP and serial communications.
DIGI INTERNATIONAL
The Digi One IAP device server provides Industrial serial-to-Ethernet and protocol conversion,
providing a means of easy, seamless and cost-effective connectivity for any serial device. Digi
One IAP has the ability to bridge Modbus (serial and Ethernet) to the Rockwell/Allen-Bradley
DF1 (serial), Ethernet and EtherNet/IP protocols (and vice versa). Configuration is as easy as
enabling the feature in the Digi® unit and configuring the PLC as normal with new required
points. Another interoperability problem rarely tackled is the ability to convert ASCII devices
such as bar-code readers, RFID, scales and cameras into Industrial Ethernet protocols. This is
difficult because ASCII has no defined standard for delimiting, thus making it difficult to
extract the relevant data. Digi One IAP has the unprecedented ability to integrate ASCII
devices with major industrial protocols by allowing it to store the data from the ASCII device
in a ‘virtual register’ on Digi One IAP until it is polled by any of the supported protocols.
A key benefit of the new Digi One IAP is that the interoperability is not limited to just
serial-to-Ethernet; the protocol routing can be done over all of its ports. Digi One IAP can
act as a serial-only, serial-to-Ethernet or Ethernet-only bridge for multiple protocols.
In other words, requests/responses can be:
• Serial-to-Serial – ASCII, Modbus, DF1
• Serial-to-Ethernet – ASCII, Modbus, DF1 (serial types); Modbus/TCP, A-B Ethernet,
EtherNet/IP (Ethernet types)
• Ethernet-to-Ethernet – Modbus/TCP, A-B Ethernet, EtherNet/IP
instrumentation to the Logix platform via EtherNet/IP. Using the configuration tool,
HSNetworxPA, an entire network can be configured and added to the Logix controller in
minutes. This utility makes use of the manufacturer’s GSD files, to automatically configure
the network, and configure and create UDT and tag instances in the Logix controller.
Network and device reconfiguration is possible offline as well as, on an Online Running
controller. Instrument process variables and diagnostics can be accessed through meaningful
data structures, without requiring complicated bit and byte mapping. All PA network
configuration information is stored in the Logix platform and hence the RSLogix file,
simplifying future maintenance. The unit provides network diagnostic information
including PA Bus voltage and current, and node status.
WEED INSTRUMENTS
The R/T200W Series Industrial Ethernet Switches are the ideal solution for redundant
systems. The Fast Re-configuration of Networks Topology (FRNT) concept eliminates
failures caused by network links and/or switches. It offers ultra fast ring re-configuration
(30ms) of the network topology and both fault contact and SNMP to provide notification of
the ring failure. Redundancy can be achieved for most types of network topologies, such as
Single Ring, Double Rings and Bridged Rings (redundant connections between two rings).
WEIDMÜLLER
Weidmüller offer a range of routers, managed and unmanaged switches and Ethernet media.
Weidmüller’s industrial access routers connect industrial Ethernet networks safely and
securely to the Internet via an integrated analogue or ISDN modem that provides global
application options. External modems (ISDN, GSM, DSL or analogue) are simply
connected to the RS232 interface. Access to networks behind the routers is then granted
to authorised users only, making it possible to conceal connected networks or machines
behind a single IP address. This design minimises the time and effort required for
network installation.
The two mini routers are compact in design and are housed in plastic enclosures that mount
onto TS-32/35 DIN-Rail. One of the units features two RJ45 ports and one RS232
interface and the second features one RJ45 port and two RS232 interfaces. In addition to
industrial Ethernet routers, Weidmüller also offers a full range of products for Industrial
Ethernet solutions. These include managed and unmanaged switches, media converters,
cables (patch and bulk cable in copper, and patch cable in fibre), cable entry systems,
INFRASTRUCTURE
connection modules, cable testers, Ethernet outlets, connection sockets, front plate
interfaces, markers, RJ45 dust caps, couplers, plugs, installation flanges, Class 2 approved
DDL Drive and Diagnostic Link
Drive Diagnostic Link (DDL) is a daisy chained system that checks every valve’s supply
voltage is within acceptable tolerances, solenoid coils operate properly, and instantly
pinpoints short circuits. And should it detect a fault, the control system displays appropriate
text messages to alert operators and service technicians, often before a failure occurs. Checks
are carried out as soon as a machine is switched on and continuously as it runs, ensuring the
pneumatic subsystem operates properly at all times. DDL also simplifies the design of
pneumatic systems because it is compatible with common fieldbus protocols including
NETWORK VISION
Designed specifically for control technicians to take the mystery out of Ethernet networks.
IntraVUE provides a live, dynamic, and graphically rich view of the network. Automatically
maps the wiring of the network connections for real-time monitoring. It is the equivalent of
Ladder Logic power flow but for the connected devices on your network. The software will
automatically tell you when devices are added, moved or removed from the network.
The snapshot feature can freeze in time the current network status and interconnection
traffic for off-line analysis. Event logs capture all events such as switches resetting or
periodically misbehaving devices. Very unique and gear toward control engineers that are
becoming more active with TCP/IP devices. Can be integrated into operator interface
software (RSView) and/or viewed via a browser for easy access. Information in IntraVUE
can be directly monitored by other software packages.
interfaces, and can act as an electronic gearbox.
DC link inductors connected symmetrically to the DC link terminals will ensure
compliance with the IEC 61000-3-12 harmonics standard without needing
external reactances.
