Work on the web
There are also many purely internet-based
jobs; what’s now called telecommuting. But be
judicious in your choices. Be aware that some
estimate as many as 80% of these ‘opportunities’
are scams. However, with a bit of careful
research you can find data entry jobs, freelancers
sites where you bid for work, and content
creation or blog writing opportunities that help
others optimise their search engine recognition.
Again, it really helps if you LIKE writing and
have some experience of creating content for
the web … because you’ll have to do a lot of it to
make it pay.
Work for other expats and
exploit your English
There ARE jobs out there. Perhaps you could
teach English, work for a British company, an
estate agent, restaurant, call centre or hotel
needing those who can speak a language other
than Bulgarian? You’ll need to search carefully,
but www.jobs.bg allows you to search through
typically more than 8,000 vacancies and tailor
your search by area and profession. You may
find translation and teaching work and some
companies do specifically look for native English
speakers. But be aware: to be an English teacher,
you need to be qualified. As with all professions,
you can’t just walk into them without experience
and qualifications just because you happen to
speak a language.
In VT, we’re lucky to have a pretty big
community of English-speaking expats. Many
are running companies and, though most are
small, some may have openings at campsites
or bars, building firms or as tourist guides and
drivers. Ask around and you might just find a
job opportunity.
Of course, the best thing is to come out here
with a job or your own business already secured,
if you do need one. But that isn’t possible for
everyone. But, as with anywhere in the world, it’s
all about seeing a gap in the market and filling it.
See our expat entrepreneur articles, this month
on pages two to three, to get some inspiration!
