Dr. Linda Fran Bluth has 45 years of 

experience as a Special Educator including 

31 years in special needs transportation. 

Her past experience includes work at the 

United States Department of Education 

(USDE) and as a university professor, 

school system administrator, and policy 

specialist in the Maryland Governor’s 

Office for Children, Youth and Families. 

She is currently employed part-time at the 

Maryland State Department of Education, 

Division of Special Education/Early 

Intervention Services. Her current position 

includes addressing transportation issues 

and providing technical assistance. 

Since 1970, Valentine F. Lynch has served 

as Director and Vice President of IFS 

Financial Corporation, Bowie, Maryland, an 

investment advisor for individuals and small 

businesses, including investment planning, 

accounting, tax preparation and practice 

management. He is a certified financial 

planner and employee benefit specialist. Val 

is the grandfather of a Benedictine alumnus 

(look for a story about Zac elsewhere in this 

issue).

Greetings from Sister Jeannette 

It is my pleasure to introduce our latest Bright Futures 

magazine, which includes our Annual Report for the fiscal 

year 2010. This has been a remarkable year in so many ways, 

one of overcoming challenges and emerging even better. That 

is the way God often works; obstacles become opportunities 

for inspiration and growth. 

Personally, I saw the inside of the hospital and infirmary more 

often than I ever would wish. Thankfully, that is behind us now, 

but it also gave me time to reflect and appreciate the blessing 

of working every day with the loving children and dedicated 

professionals around me as we improve the lives of those 

with special needs. It also showed me that our organization 

is strong, stable, vibrant, and totally prepared to meet any 

challenges we may face in the future. The economic climate 

makes attracting students or funding difficult, but we continue 

to be extremely successful in both. We have executed our 

transition to a twelve-month program, which strengthens 

our competitive advantage. We continue to be blessed with 

skilled, dedicated, generous, highly qualified people among 

our staff, our boards, and throughout our community. 

I invite you to read our Bright Futures/Annual Report to 

appreciate all that we have accomplished together, and 

especially to see all the smiling faces of the children and 

adults here. You have helped us provide a rich, nurturing, and 

loving environment for them this past year. With your support 

and our good Lord’s blessing, we will continue to do so well 

into the future.

A P R I L 2 0 1 0 Spring 

On April 24th, Spring Benefit 2010 

drew the Benedictine community to 

our “Sophisticated Supper Club” at the 

elegant Hyatt Regency Chesapeake 

Bay in Cambridge, Maryland. It is 

always wonderful to greet old friends 

and meet new friends who have 

so much in common—our belief in 

Benedictine’s kids. Approximately 250 

people came to enjoy dinner, dancing 

and socializing. The special surprise 

guest speaker for the evening was 

Kevin Duckworth, a graduate of the 

Benedictine School and longtime 

member of the Open Community and 

Vocational Training Programs. Kevin 

gave an excellent talk that gave an 

inside look at life in the Benedictine 

family and what it means to him. What a 

wonderful way to let the world know the 

importance of our entire community’s 

generosity and devotion. Many thanks 

to Hunter and Cecelia Duckworth, 

and Val and Margee Lynch, Co-Chairs 

of Spring Benefit 2010, and to all the 

regional and committee members for 

putting together another memorable 

gala event. 

The 2010 Regional Chairs were: Thane

21st Annual Charity Golf Tournament Raises $57,000 

For Students and Adults at Benedictine 

The event hosted 120 Golfers at Harbourtowne Golf Resort and 

Conference Center in St. Michaels, Md. 

“We are truly blessed and honored to gather year after year our friends 

and sponsors for such a wonderful event that supports our good work,” 

said Sister Jeannette.

The golf tournament’s winning team consisted of Keith Berkey, 

Gerald Berkey, Karl Berkey and Karl Kibler. 120 golfers 

participated, each receiving a premium gift bag, brunch and 

dinner. Additionally, a benefit auction offered items such as golf 

outings, restaurant certificates, a weekend stay in New York City, 

and luxury suite tickets to a Redskins game. 

“Our kids are our most important asset at Benedictine School 

and we rely on events like these to help our students thrive,” 

said Sister Jeannette. “Thanks again to all who make it 

possible.” 

The event also included a 50/50 raffle, a drawing for a 

“Wheelbarrow of Cheer” and a chance to sink a 50-foot putt 

for $10,000 in cash. For these and many other reasons, the 

Benedictine Charity Golf Classic is one of the region’s premiere 

golf tournaments.

are being finalized for the 22nd 

Annual Charity Golf Tournament, 

which will once again bring 

Benedictine’s golfer friends to 

St. Michaels for a day of fun for a

Chrome City Ride VIII in September Raises Over $96,000! 

We enjoyed another fabulous Sunday on September 13, 2009, 

thanks to all the riders, police and other volunteers, and the 

Chrome City Ride Committee. Each year seems to bring more 

friends and more fun for this unique event. 

What a sight and sound – hundreds of heavy bikes roar down the country road leading to Benedictine. 

It’s always a big day for all the kids and Benedictine 

community, and the eighth annual Ride raised over $96,000 

for Benedictine’s scholarship assistance fund!

Chrome City Ride IX in July Beats the Heat, Tops $110,000! 

The stifling weather could not stop the stupendous support of 

Benedictine’s family and friends. Chrome City Ride was cool on 

one of the hottest days of summer, Sunday, July 25, in Ridgely. 

This is the ninth year for this one-of-a-kind event, and another 

great success. The riders and generous sponsors netted over 

$110,000 to help Benedictine educate and care for even more 

of their special children and adults with intellectual disabilities. 

In addition to feeling good about all they’d accomplished, the 

riders, sponsors, and volunteers enjoyed a spectacular day. 

Chrome City Ride puts the “fun” in fundraising! 

“We are so blessed to have friends like these,” said Sister 

Jeannette.“They’ve shown that they care about helping people 

even more than they care about their impressive chrome. That 

means better lives for our kids.” Sister Jeannette believes that 

raising awareness is also vital, and the chance for the kids to be 

part of the community is another great benefit. “The kids and all 

the rest of us look forward to having these exciting visitors come 

spend a day of fun with us. It’s our favorite day of the year. We 

can’t wait ‘til the next Ride!” 

Owners of awesome cars and bikes from all over Maryland, 

Delaware, and Virginia gathered at various designated 

locations, then cruised in police-escorted convoys to the 

Benedictine School. Over 300 bikes came to Ridgely, and many 

incredible custom cars and trucks. For a $25 contribution, 

each participant received a T-shirt (custom designed by 

Don Fletcher), lunch provided by Expressions Catering, 

entertainment, a chance for prizes and trophies, and a day 

of fun showing off their “chrome” to an appreciative crowd. 

“Rockin’ Elvis” (in the person of impersonator Jim Godbold) 

was a big hit with the crowd as always. Many businesses 

and individuals from around the region provided generous 

sponsorships for the event, and everybody had a great day

In today’s competitive economic environment, it is more important than ever that we make it clear and spread the word about who 

we are, what we do, and why Benedictine is unique. Starting in January, administrative leaders from all areas of Benedictine met 

together and sought professional consultation as to the best way to do this. We in the Benedictine community know and see every 

day why this place is so special, but we must express it in ways accessible to current and prospective families, referral agencies, 

donors and potential donors, business contacts and job seekers, and also raise awareness of the special qualities of those with 

disabilities. 

One result of this study is 

our new logo set of logos. 

We now use “Benedictine” 

as the name to include our 

entire organization. Our new 

Benedictine logo has been 

simplified to just that, and the 

shorter phrase “LEARNING 

FOR LIVING”.

Touching Hearts in a 

Restaurant 

A “Letter to the Editor” in The Star 

Democrat was sent in by one of our 

staff in the Open Community. One of the 

larger objectives of the Open Community 

is for people with disabilities to live in 

the world like everyone else, so that 

the public can become more aware of 

what really makes them special. Here is 

someone who clearly gets it: 

the Benedictine School for 

exceptional Children, Inc., 

known as The Benedictine 

School, is a twelve month 

co-ed day and residential 

school for individuals ages 

5 to 21 with intellectual 

disabilities, multiple disabilities, 

and autism. 

The Mission of The Benedictine 

School is to assist individuals 

with disabilities in becoming 

as independent or semiindependent 

as possible; 

to make wise use of leisure 

time; and to live and work in a 

community setting. 

A Gentleman Who Cares 

Benedictine Adult Services 

includes the Open 

Community Residential 

Program, which provides 

supported group home living 

in the community, and the 

Vocational Program, which 

provides assessment, 

training, and supported 

vocational placement on 

campus or in the community. 

The mission of Benedictine 

Adult Services is to see 

people with developmental 

disabilities living meaningful, 

productive, personally 

satisfying and well supported 

lives in the communities of 

their choice.

more. Benedictine Programs 

and Services is an extremely 

cost-effective organization. In 

fact, about 90 percent of funds 

raised go toward direct care of 

students and adults. 

The Benedictine Foundation’s 

mission is to secure the 

financial resources needed to 

assure the future of the 

Benedictine School for 

Exceptional Children and its 

programs and services. 

“I am a house counselor who works for the Benedictine School for Exceptional 

Children in the Open Community. Recently, my clients and I were at Denny’s to 

celebrate one of their birthdays. We were waiting for two other groups of clients 

to join us. While we were waiting, the manager told me a gentleman paid for his 

dinner and gave his card number to pay for our dinner. The manager told him we 

were expecting more people. The man said it was no problem. He told the manager 

he noticed how I was interacting with the ladies and he wanted to treat us. 

While we were talking, the gentleman came back in to tell the manager to give the 

waitress a 20 percent tip. We would have gladly left the tip. It means a lot to know 

there are still good people who care about others.”

especially developed to clarify and increase understanding 

and appreciation of Benedictine. Our site has been completely 

re-organized and re-designed this year, with lots of new 

content. In addition, much behind-the-scenes work has been 

done with search engine optimization to help people find 

Benedictine faster and more easily when they search for 

services like ours. The new site has already paid dividends 

in helping parents of prospective students to discover and 

inquire about us. We continue to add to and improve the site, 

so please visit us online and let us know your comments.

2 0 1 0 New Book About 

Benedictine’s Matt Mason 

There are many fascinating and heartwarming stories at 

Benedictine. Thanks to the talent and perseverance of a 

loving parent, one of those stories has been published in a 

book. The Ambassador of the 14th Hole tells the inspiring 

story of Matt Mason, a member of our Open Community, as 

told by his mother, Mary Mason. 

For many years Matt has been a volunteer marshal at 

the PGA Heritage Golf Tournament in Hilton Head, South 

Carolina. Everyone at Benedictine is familiar with Matt’s hugs, 

but his spontaneous gesture to a professional golfer, who 

was inspired by Matt’s genuine warmth and spirit, became 

quite a story. 

Mary’s book is the true story of how a Down’s Syndrome 

child has affected so many people: family, friends, church 

members, and of course golfers. Narrated by Mary and many 

others who have come to know Matt, will resonate with all 

parents of children with Down’s and other disabilities, filled 

with tears and laughter. 

Mary and Dick Mason have donated copies of the book to 

the Benedictine Foundation for sale, with all proceeds going

Five of our students attended the 4th Annual Talbot Special 

Riders Recognition Program & Dessert Reception at the Krystal 

Q in Easton on May 19th. Ben S., Carey M., Zack D., Chelsea 

Y., Nicodemus Z. attended with staff Janet Kinnamon, Danielle 

Kinnamon, and Julie Hickey.

In Loving Memory 

Billy J. Morris 

September 17, 1933 - October 9, 2009 

When we lost our colleague, Teaching 

Assistant “Mr. Bill,” last fall, everyone 

was invited to submit descriptive words 

in remembrance. They speak volumes 

and are a perfect tribute to a wonderful 

friend who is deeply missed.

Sister Miriam Ruth Wilk 

May 18, 1914 – December 3, 2009 

Sister Miriam Ruth was the last graduate 

of Saint Mary Elementary School 

(attached to the Benedictine Sisters’ 

original motherhouse in Newark, New 

Jersey), and she was also the last 

graduate of Saint Gertrude Academy 

to enter the Benedictine community in 

Ridgely. Sister earned masters’ degrees 

in both Latin and English from Villanova 

University. She was disappointed when 

Latin was no longer used at Mass. She 

was known to read Cicero in her spare 

time - in Latin, of course. She was the 

community’s ultimate authority on rules 

of grammar and held the record for 

her tenure as community secretary. 

Sister also initiated the Benedictine 

oblate program in 1983 soon after that 

option was made available to women’s 

communities. This program is still vibrant 

today with 43 active oblates and 5 

novice oblates. 

Sister M. Assumpta Conti 

May 17, 1917 – June 5, 2010 

Sister Assumpta was born in Brooklyn, 

N.Y., and raised in Philadelphia until 

she entered the Benedictine Sisters’ 

community in 1938. She spent her 

active ministry in education, serving 

as both teacher and principal at Saint 

Elizabeth, Sacred Heart, and Saint 

Catherine of Siena Schools. Sister also 

taught Spanish and business subjects 

at Saint Elizabeth High School and 

Spanish at Saint Mark’s High School 

where she was the chairperson of the 

Foreign Language Department. After 

retirement in 1977 and until the day 

she died, she worked in the finance 

office of the Benedictine School. Sister 

always loved to travel, and has been 

to Italy, Spain, Norway, Denmark and 

Sweden. Her niece, Linda, is a member 

of the Benedictine Open Community.

M A Y 2 0 1 0 Encouraging Environmental Action 

Benedictine students in the Pre-Vocational I 

program, under the guidance of their teacher 

Debi Williamson, have been involved in many 

projects that benefit the environment, especially 

by working with plants and trees. These are 

activites the students can think about and learn 

from, gaining the understanding that they can 

positively impact our world. It is something they 

can work on with their hands, keeping to their 

task, inside and outside, and at the end of the day 

they know they’ve accomplished something good 

for everyone.

At morning assembly on Monday, May 3rd, the representative 

from the Maryland State Department of Natural Resources 

presented the class with the PLANT Award (People Loving 

And Nurturing Trees) for their work in planting and caring for 

Benedictine’s trees. 

FutuRe envIRonmentAl StAR AWARD 

On Wednesday, May 12, The Pre-Voc I class was named 

“Future Environmental Stars of the Month” by WMDT Channel 

47 in Salisbury, sponsored by Mountaire Farms, Inc. Roger 

Marino, Corporate Director of Community Relations for 

Mountaire, came to the Benedictine classroom to visit with 

the students, see their work, and to present teacher Debi 

Williamson with the award. Sister Jeannette was on hand to 

offer her congratulations on this worthwhile project. “The kids 

love to work with the plants in the dirt,” said Sister Jeannette, 

“and we all love our nice green campus. This gives them an 

opportunity to know they are a part of improving our world.” 

Another of Debi’s projects is the Maryland Big Tree Program, 

through which Benedictine has been recognized as having on 

our campus many of the state’s largest specimens of various 

native tree species.

A P R I L 2 0 1 0 Benedictine Hosts Eastern Shore School 

Psychologist Association’s Spring Meeting 

On Friday, April 16th, 36 school 

psychologists from the Eastern 

Shore School Psychology 

Association (ESSPA) enjoyed 

a wonderful day of learning at 

The Benedictine School, which 

hosted ESSPA’s annual spring 

conference. All nine Eastern 

Shore counties were represented, 

in addition to the Mid-Shore 

Special Education Consortium. 

Benedictine’s school psychologists, 

Toni Pajak and Lola Nagel, 

planned and organized this spring 

conference for their Eastern 

Shore colleagues. 

The Murray Family 

Aquatherapy Center was 

one of the highlights of the 

group’s tour throughout 

Benedictine’s facilities. 

The psychologists were welcomed by 

Educational Director Nancy McCloy, 

who emphasized building partnerships 

with community schools and agencies. 

Benedictine’s Communication, Counseling, 

Vocational/ Transition, and OT/PT staff 

shared information, insights, and tricksof-the-trade 

with ESSPA participants. 

Presentations focused on the continuum, 

delivery, and integration of services; 

multi-disciplinarian teams and clinical 

design; and the physical structuring, 

adaptations, and accommodations used 

to access instruction for students with 

communication disorders, behavioral/ 

emotional needs, complex medical needs, 

sensory issues, and intellectual disabilities. 

ESSPA school psychologists enjoyed 

breakfast and lunch catered by 

Benedictine’s Healthy Way Café, a 

student vocational program, supervised 

by Vocational teacher Lorraine Slama 

and Home-Ec teacher Mary Jo Kline. 

The day concluded with observations 

of students and a walking tour of the 

campus, including: classrooms; sensory 

areas; residential dorms; clinical pod 

area; kitchen training areas; cafeteria, 

including specialized eating area; gym; 

pool and therapeutic pool; resource 

room; and vocational training sites— 

laundry, carwash, Graphics/screen 

printing, greenhouse and the Industrial 

Training Center.

Zac Lynch Bowls A Perfect Game 

Perfection is always an ideal goal but 

one that is nearly impossible to reach. 

Zac Lynch, who was diagnosed with autism as a 

young child, bowled a perfect 300 at Greenway 

Bowling Lanes in Odenton on April 10.

Zac Lynch, a 21-year-old Benedictine 

graduate who hails from Crofton, 

proved that perfect is possible when 

he bowled his first perfect game at 

Greenway Bowling Lanes in Odenton 

April 10th. 

“Bowling a 300 game is a feat 

sometimes not even realized by 

pros,” said Margee Lynch, Zachary’s 

grandmother. It is even more special 

for the Lynch family because 

Zachary is autistic. Margee said 

Zac was diagnosed with the neural 

development disorder when he was 

three and a half. 

“Like most people with autism, he 

is not very conversational,” Margee 

adds, but bowling is one of his favorite 

activities, and she enjoys taking 

him to the lanes. The Annapolis 

Capital newspaper featured a story 

and photo of Zac to highlight his 

accomplishment.

On Wed. June 9, 2010, the 

students in the Intermediate 

class went to Victor and 

Susan Barlow’s shop, 

The Scottish Highland 

Creamery, for a field trip. 

They learned about the 

ingredients in ice cream 

and how to make it. Victor 

then let the students join 

him in making Cookies 

and Cream ice cream 

with the students taking 

turns adding cookies to the 

ice cream. Of course, the 

learning experience involved 

sampling the product.

This past spring, one of our students gave generously of 

herself; Natalie P. donated her beautiful chestnut hair to 

Locks of Love. 

Locks of Love provides hairpieces to financially 

disadvantaged children in the U.S.A. and Canada under 

age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any 

diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using 

donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics, 

which helps to restore the self-esteem and confidence of 

these children, enabling them to face the world and their 

peers.

that we can all make the world a better place because we 

all have gifts to share.

Unusual weather this winter dumped two doubledigit 

snowfalls just a week apart. That presents 

unusual challenges to a residential school, which we 

handled easily thanks to our exceptionally dedicated 

school staff and grounds maintenance crew. But that 

kind of weather also presents unusual beauty and 

opportunity for fun, as can be seen in this snowman 

the students built, decked out for the Olympics 

(which were on TV at that time).

volunteer student interns who come down from St. 

Anselm College in New Hampshire to spend their 

Spring Break working with our kids. They gain 

first-hand experience of being around people with

Your generosity helped cover the costs of a wide 

range of needs for our very special children and 

adults this past year, and had a profound positive 

impact on our ability to help each of them fulfill 

their greatest possible potential. In addition to 

vital funds for general operating support (nearly 

$450,000) and tuition assistance (over $300,000), 

here are some other projects you helped to fund 

this year: 

• Assessment software, mats, weighted vests, and 

communication devices for use by our clinical 

and therapeutic staff 

• Touch screens for 6 classrooms 

• Video conference systems, screens, and support 

for use in IEP meetings and parent-child 

communication 

• Projectors for IEP meetings, seminars, and staff 

professional development 

• A detailed architectural and engineering analysis 

(including review of walls, windows, roofs, 

foundation, interior circulation and finishes, life 

safety/code analysis and compliance, building 

use/program/square foot analysis, septic and 

sewage treatment analysis, mechanical systems, 

electrical system and power supply, plumbing 

fixtures and supply, and lighting) which will 

serve as a five- to seven-year planning and 

review document for the Facilities Committee 

• Resurfacing of the pool in the Murray Family 

Aqua Therapy Center 

• Mechanical plan and installation of HVAC 

system for School gymnasium 

• Book categorization software for the School 

library 

• Special shipping scale to allow Graphics 

department to accurately ship orders to 

customers via UPS 

• Offset additional costs to clear snow and ice on 

campus and at our Open Community homes 

from two back-to-back historic snow storms this 

past winter 

• Wii Fit systems and Sports packages for the 

Open Community homes and School dormitories 

to increase indoor recreation opportunities 

during winter months and inclement weather 

• Concession stand equipment (hot dog and bun 

steamer, stainless steel cart, nacho machine, and 

condiment center) for the Day Activities Center 

to use out in the community at large when raising 

awareness and funds for their special projects 

• Our March 31, 2010, Forum on Aging for 

People with Intellectual Disabilities with 

Matthew P. Janicki. Ph.D. 

• A comprehensive marketing study by the 

Hatcher Group to assess our current methods 

and identify opportunities to enhance and 

upgrade our student recruitment efforts
